Copper homeostasis and cuproptosis in central nervous system diseases.

Cell Death Dis

November 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, The Second Affiliated Hospital, Jiangxi Medical College, Nanchang University, Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, China.

Copper (Cu), an indispensable micronutrient for the sustenance of living organisms, contributes significantly to a vast array of fundamental metabolic processes. The human body maintains a relatively low concentration of copper, which is mostly found in the bones, liver, and brain. Despite its low concentration, Cu plays a crucial role as an indispensable element in the progression and pathogenesis of central nervous system (CNS) diseases.

Background: Combining epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) with chemotherapy (ETC) offers more advantages for patients with EGFR-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) than using EGFR TKIs alone (ET). However, whether this conclusion applies to patients with brain metastases (BM) remains controversial. This meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the benefits and risks of the two groups.

Background: Organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) are widely used in the world, however, OPP poisoning often occurs because of improper use and lack of protective measures. Cardiotoxicity injury induced by OPPs is insidious, and it does not receive attention until the end stage of OPP poisoning. Heart failure or arrhythmia gradually becomes the main lethal cause of OPP poisoning patients.

Association of metabolic syndrome severity with frailty progression among Chinese middle and old-aged adults: a longitudinal study.

Cardiovasc Diabetol

August 2024

Department of Cardiology, Shenzhen Cardiovascular Minimally Invasive Medical Engineering Technology Research and Development Center, Shenzhen People's Hospital (The Second Clinical Medical College, Jinan University; The First Affiliated Hospital, Southern University of Science and Technology), Shenzhen, 518020, Guangdong, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how the severity of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) affects the progression of frailty in middle-aged and elderly people in China, highlighting that the traditional binary diagnosis of MetS is insufficient for evaluating its severity.
  • Researchers utilized data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and created a frailty index based on 32 health factors to analyze the relationship between MetS scores and frailty risk over time.
  • Findings reveal that higher MetS scores significantly increase the risk of developing frailty and accelerate frailty progression, demonstrating a clear dose-response relationship between MetS severity and frailty outcomes.

Pan-Cancer Analysis Identifies BCLAF1 as a Potential Biomarker for Renal Cell Carcinoma.

Biochem Genet

April 2024

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Pathophysiology, Health Science Center, Ningbo University, Ningbo, 315211, China.

B-cell lymphoma-2-associated transcription factor 1 (BCLAF1) is a versatile protein involved in the regulation of gene transcription and post-transcriptional processing. Although BCLAF1 exerts a broad tumor suppressor effect or tumor promoter effect in many cancer types, the specific roles concerning its expression levels, and its impact on tumorigenesis in Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) remain unclear. Here, we utilized the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Genotype Tissue Expression (GTEx) datasets alongside R software and online tools to unravel the specific roles of BCLAF1 in 33 cancer types, including its expression levels, tumor immune and molecular subtypes, and its correlation with prognosis, diagnosis, DNA methylation, and immune microenvironment.

In the present study, neuroprotective effect of sevoflurane in combination with ketamine was investigated on TNF-α induced necroptosis of neurons and cognitive impairment in the rat model. The results demonstrated that exposure to TNF-α/z-VAD led to a significant decrease in viability of HT-22 neuronal cells. However, incubation of HT-22 cells with ketamine plus sevoflurane inhibited decrease in viability induced by TNF-α/z-VAD exposure.
