Department of Laboratory Diagnosis, The First Afliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University, 23 Youzheng Street, Nangang District, Harbin 150001, Heilongjiang, People's Republic of China. Electronic address:

In recent years, ferroptosis has been found to play an important role in various acute kidney injury (AKI). However, relatively little research has been conducted on sepsis-induced acute kidney injury (SI-AKI). As an important trigger of ferroptosis, how mitochondrial damage plays a regulatory role in SI-AKI is still unclear.

This study aimed to investigate how aquaporin 1 (AQP1) modulates hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF1α) to promote glycolysis and drive the M1 polarization of macrophages. Within 12 h post-treatment with LPS to induce acute kidney injury in rats, a significant upregulation of AQP1 and HIF1α protein levels was noted in serum and kidney tissues. This elevation corresponded with a decrease in blood glucose concentrations and an enhancement of glycolytic activity relative to the control group.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focused on creating a CT-enhanced scanning radiomics nomogram to differentiate between early hepatic abscess (EHA) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) and to test its effectiveness in diagnosis.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from 112 patients using 3D Slicer software for imaging, and various modeling techniques, including LASSO regression and ROC analysis, helped develop a predictive model and a joint nomogram combining radiomics and clinical scores.
  • - Results showed significant differences in various clinical and imaging features between EHA and ICC patients, indicating that the nomogram can potentially enhance diagnostic accuracy for these conditions.

Sepsis associated Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common clinical syndrome characterized by suddenly decreased in renal function and urinary volume. This study was designed to investigate the role of Aquaporin 1 (AQP1) and P53 in the development of sepsis-induced AKI and their potential regulatory mechanisms. Firstly, transcriptome sequencing analysis of mice kidney showed AQP1 expression was reduced and P53 expression was elevated in Cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced AKI compared with controls.

Objective: The guidelines recommend early caffeine administration for preterm infants requiring non-invasive mechanical ventilation since earlier treatment is associated with better outcomes. The objective was to evaluate the impact of early caffeine therapy (within 24 hours after birth) on respiratory outcomes in very preterm infants who were initially receiving invasive mechanical ventilation.

Methods: This was an observation cohort study from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2022 based on a database that was prospectively collected and maintained.

Rationale: Listeria monocytogenes (LM) is an important foodborne bacterium, and LM meningoencephalitis is rare in clinical practice, with poor prognosis in severe patients. It is prone to misdiagnosis in clinical practice. We first reported a case of severe LM meningoencephalitis with muscle lesions and evaluated the comprehensive condition.

Background: Although, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been widely applied in the therapy of malignant tumors, the efficacy and safety of ICIs in patients with tumors and pre-existing CAD, especially chronic coronary syndromes (CCS) or their risk factors (CRF), is not well identified.

Methods: This was a nationwide multicenter observational study that enrolled participants who diagnosed with solid tumors and received ICIs therapy. The main efficacy indicators were progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS), followed by objective response rate (ORR) and disease control rate (DCR).

OTUD5 promotes the growth of hepatocellular carcinoma by deubiquitinating and stabilizing SLC38A1.

Biol Direct

April 2024

Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Tumor Molecular Diagnosis and Individualized Medicine, Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital, Affiliated People's Hospital, Hangzhou Medical College, 310014, Hangzhou, China.

Background: Deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) cleave ubiquitin on substrate molecules to maintain protein stability. DUBs reportedly participate in the tumorigenesis and tumour progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). OTU deubiquitinase 5 (OTUD5), a DUB family member, has been recognized as a critical regulator in bladder cancer, breast cancer and HCC.

Zinc finger protein 131 (ZNF131), a member of BTB-ZF transcription factors, has been previously reported as an oncogene in several human cancers. However, the function and underlying mechanism of ZNF131 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are still unclear. In our study, the upregulated expression of ZNF131 mRNA was confirmed in HCC tissues by analyzing the TCGA and GEO datasets.

A dramatic shift in the global food system is occurring with the rapid growth of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) consumption, which poses potentially serious health risks. Systematic review (SR) method has been used to summarise the association between UPF consumption and multiple health outcomes; however, a suboptimal-quality SR may mislead the decision-making in clinical practices and health policies. Therefore, a methodological review was conducted to identify the areas that can be improved regarding the risk of bias and reporting quality of relevant SRs.

Objective: The aim of study was to evaluate the effect and safety of pioglitazone-metformin combined treatment in the newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Methods: A total of 120 newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease from 8 centers were randomly divided into the control group (metformin hydrochloride) and the test group (pioglitazone hydrochloride and metformin hydrochloride).

Results: Compared to the control group, after treatment, the proportion of people with mild and moderate fatty liver increased, and the proportion of people with severe fatty liver decreased, and this change was more obvious in the population with moderate and severe fatty liver.

Objective: To investigate the efficacy of fluorouracil (FU) combined with paclitaxel (PTX) and oxaliplatin (OXA) as the first-line treatment for advanced gastric signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) and its influence on human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER-2) expression.

Methods: We collected one hundred and sixty-eight patients with advanced gastric SRCC, including 87 patients treated with FU combined with PTX and OXA as the study group (SG) and 81 patients treated with FU combined with OXA as the control group (CG). We compared indicators such as efficacy and adverse reactions after treatment between the two groups and also detected serum HER-2 expression pre- and post-treatment.

Background: Previous antibiotic exposure is an important risk factor for invasive fungal infection (IFI). Antibiotic overexposure is common in lower-income countries; however, multi-centre studies concerning IFI in relation to antibiotic exposure are scarce.

Aim: This prospective, multi-centre matched case-control study explored the correlation of IFI and antibiotic exposure in very preterm infants or very-low-birthweight infants admitted to 23 tertiary hospitals in China between 2018 and 2021.

The diagnostic efficacy of coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) images of coronary arteries in restenosis after coronary stenting based on the combination of the convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm and the automatic segmentation algorithm for region growth of vascular similarity features was explored to provide a more effective diagnostic method for patients. 130 patients with coronary artery disease were randomly selected as the research objects, and they were averagely classified into the control group (conventional coronary CTA image diagnosis) and the observation group (coronary CTA image diagnosis based on an improved automatic segmentation algorithm). Based on the diagnostic criteria of coronary angiography (CAG), the efficacy of two kinds of coronary CTA images on the postoperative subsequent visit of coronary heart disease (CHD) stenting was evaluated.
