Background: Arginine kinase (AK) is one of the crucial enzymes involved in energy metabolism in invertebrates, and has been proposed as the target for RNA interference (RNAi)-based control of agricultural insect pests. While there is only one AK gene in most insects, two AK genes were identified in Culex pipiens pallens, the primary vector of lymphatic filariasis and epidemic encephalitis.

Methods: The full-length cDNA sequences of CpAK1 and CpAK2 genes were obtained by reverse transcription PCR(RT-PCR) and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE).

Methicillin-resistant (MRSA) isolates remain a serious threat to global health despite a decrease in MRSA infections since 2005. MRSA isolates exhibit great diversity worldwide, and their lineages show geographic variation. In this study, we used whole genome sequencing (WGS) to analyze antibiotic resistance genes and virulence genes, , staphylococcal cassette chromosome , sequence types (STs), and core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST) of MRSA isolates from patients and environmental surface in hospitals in China to determine their prevalence and molecular traits.

Introduction: Internal migrant Men who have sex with men (IMMSM), which has the dual identity of MSM and floating population, should be more concerned among the vulnerable groups for HIV in society. Establishing appropriate prediction models to assess the risk of HIV infection among IMMSM is of great significance to against HIV infection and transmission.

Methods: HIV and syphilis infection were detected using rapid test kits, and other 30 variables were collected among IMMSM through questionnaire.

Division of Epidemiology, Department of Medicine, Vanderbilt Epidemiology Center, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, 2525 West End Avenue, Suite 800, Nashville, TN, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed data from over 160,000 breast cancer patients and 226,000 controls from Asian and European backgrounds to explore genetic factors linked to breast cancer risk, identifying 222 genetic risk loci and 137 associated genes.
  • - Among these, 32 loci and 15 genes showed varying levels of association between estrogen receptor (ER)-positive and ER-negative breast cancer after accounting for statistical correction.
  • - The research also revealed significant differences based on ancestry in risk allele frequencies and highlighted new potential genetic variants not previously associated with breast cancer, contributing to a broader understanding of the disease's genetic landscape.

November 2022

NHC Key Laboratory of Food Safety Risk Assessment, Research Unit of Food Safety, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (No. 2019RU014), China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment, Beijing, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted in six provinces of China from July 2010 to July 2011 to estimate the incidence of foodborne gastroenteritis caused by nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica, Shigella, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus.
  • The analysis used a multiplier calculation model, estimating that the burden of Salmonella and Vibrio infections was substantial, with incidences per 100,000 population at 245 for salmonellosis, 67 for shigellosis, and 806 for Vibrio infections.
  • The findings highlight the significant impact of these pathogens on China's healthcare system and underscore the need for ongoing surveillance to improve food safety.

Human hair, as an emerging biological monitoring matrix, has begun to be used in various human exposure studies, but little research has been done on persistent organic pollutants (POPs), especially for the body burden of POPs in infants. In this study, 36 breast-fed infants in Shanghai were recruited for a study to determine their exposure to POPs, including 12 dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs), 6 indicator PCBs, and 8 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the inner layer (internal) and outer layer (external) of infant hair and human milk. The similarity or difference of the POP distribution pattern or concentration among these matrices was investigated, and only weak correlations ( < 0.

The prevalence of carcinogenic N-nitrosamines in drinking water is of significant concern. In the present study, eight N-nitrosamines from three representative drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) in Shanghai, China were monitored for an entire year to evaluate their seasonal variability, probabilistic cancer risk and the resulting disease burden. The possibility of employing routinely monitored water quality parameters as predictors of N-nitrosamines was also examined.

Background: With the exception of very early-stage small cell lung cancer (SCLC), surgery is not typically recommended for this disease; however, incidental resection still occurs. After incidental resection, adjuvant salvage therapy is widely offered, but the evidence supporting its use is limited. This study aimed to explore proper adjuvant therapy for these incidentally resected SCLC cases.
