Sludge landfilling is widely used in China, accounting for approximately 65% of total sludge disposal, due to its simplicity and cost-effectiveness. However, with increasing land scarcity and stricter environmental regulations, the Chinese government has emphasized reducing sludge landfilling. Despite these efforts, sludge historically disposed of in landfills continues to pose risks, including heavy metal leaching and contamination of groundwater and soil.

Human pose estimation is an important research direction in the field of computer vision, which aims to accurately identify the position and posture of keypoints of the human body through images or videos. However, multi-person pose estimation yields false detection or missed detection in dense crowds, and it is still difficult to detect small targets. In this paper, we propose a Mamba-based human pose estimation.

The Buckling Behavior and Reliability Evaluation of a Cable-Stayed Bridge with Unique-Shaped Towers.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

School of Aerospace Engineering and Applied Mechanics, Tongji University, Shanghai 200092, China.

Buckling is a significant concern for cable-stayed bridges that incorporate a large number of steel components, particularly those featuring unique-shaped towers that require further examination due to the intricate internal force and stress distribution. This paper investigates the buckling behavior of a cable-stayed bridge with inverted V-shaped towers. The cable tower is characterized by its unique design that consists of diagonal bracings and columns in a compression-bending state.

The hydrodynamics, water temperature, and water quality model for the Dan River and Renzhuang Reservoir continuum were developed using field monitoring data and the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC). An in-situ water discharge experiment enabled the calculation of water propagation time using a simulated flood progression method and the hydrodynamics module of EFDC. Based on these model results, degradation coefficients for chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), fluoride, arsenic were determined, revealing significantly higher values when the wetland barrage was opening.

Right-turning vehicles and pedestrians share the right-of-way during the permitted signal phase at intersections in countries with right-handed traffic. Although right-turning vehicles are required to stop or yield to pedestrians according to the traffic rules, there still remains circumstances where the two will compete, posing significant safety risks to pedestrians. To investigate the impact mechanism of right-turn configurations, driver characteristics, and traffic operational features on vehicle-pedestrian conflict risk, a driving simulator experiment was conducted.

Reinforced concrete (RC) slabs are widely used in modern building structures due to their superior properties and ease of construction. However, their mechanical properties are limited by their punching shear strength in the connection region with the columns. Researchers have attempted to add steel reinforcement in the form of studs and randomly distributed fibers to concrete slabs to improve the punching strength.

The fire station location has essential theoretical and practical values, not only in terms of maintaining the safety of life and property, but also enriching the optimization theory of site selection problems. To study the multi-objective siting problem of fire stations, we firstly divided demand areas and fire stations into three levels to form a comprehensive hierarchical emergency coverage network covering fire risk areas. Secondly, the nodes of the original location of the fire station were added to the set of nodes of the planned construction of the fire station.

Polyanionic Electrolyte Ionization Desalination Empowers Continuous Solar Evaporation Performance.

Adv Mater

December 2024

School of Engineering, Institute for Multiscale Thermofluids, The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland, EH9 3FD, UK.

Solar evaporation contributes to sustainable and environmentally friendly production of fresh water from seawater and wastewater. However, poor salt resistance and high degree of corrosion of traditional evaporators in brine make their implementation in real applications scarce. To overcome such deficiency, a polyanionic electrolyte functionalization strategy empowering excellent uniform desalination performance over extended periods of time is exploited.

Stability analysis of electromagnetic suspension systems coupled with flexible frames: Modeling, control, analysis and experimentation.

ISA Trans

January 2025

Maglev Transportation Engineering R&D Center, Tongji University, Shanghai, China; State Key Laboratory of High-speed Maglev Transportation Technology, CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co., Ltd., Qingdao, China. Electronic address:

The stability of the suspension is a key challenge for the application and promotion of electromagnetic suspension technology, especially when it operates in conjunction with a flexible structure, which significantly increases the system's complexity. This paper abstracts the characteristics of the coupling conditions between an electromagnetic suspension system and a flexible structure and designs and constructs an experimental apparatus that includes an electromagnet and a simulated flexible structure with adjustable stiffness and inertia. Based on the Lyapunov method, the central manifold theorem, and the Poincaré method, the stability of the electromagnetic suspension system and the conditions for Hopf bifurcations are derived.

It is vital and challenging to coordinate the protection of natural reserves with rural construction. The rural structure and function were divided during the creation of natural reserves on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau (QTP), throwing the rural structure and functional system and its constituent parts out of balance. According to current research results on the construction mode of rural landscapes, the creation of rural landscapes is unable to address the requirements of villages and encourage the creation of protected areas.

Tunnel disease detection and maintenance are critical tasks in urban engineering, and are essential for the safety and stability of urban transportation systems. Water stain detection presents unique challenges due to its variable morphology and scale, which leads to insufficient multiscale contextual information extraction and boundary information loss in complex environments. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a method called Deep Aggregation Network with Edge Information Supplement (DAEiS-Net) for detecting tunnel water stains.

Water Res X

September 2024

Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Energy - Saving in Heat Exchange Systems, College of Environmental and Chemical Engineering, Shanghai University of Electric Power, Shanghai 200090, China.

The goal of this study was to assess the impacts or benefits of sludge in situ reduction (SIR) within wastewater treatment processes with relation to global warming potential in wastewater treatment plants, with a comprehensive consideration of wastewater and sludge treatment. The anaerobic side-stream reactor (ASSR) and the sludge process reduction activated sludge (SPRAS), two typical SIR technologies, were used to compare the carbon footprint analysis results with the conventional anaerobic - anoxic - oxic (AAO) process. Compared to the AAO, the ASSR with a typical sludge reduction efficiency (SRE) of 30 % increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 1.
