Article Synopsis
  • Transperineal ultrasonography has been used for diagnosing rectocele, but previous studies showed poor consistency with defecography in evaluating its severity.
  • This pilot study involved 30 female participants and compared results from defecation proctography and transperineal ultrasonography in different positions to assess agreement in measurements.
  • The results indicated significant differences in various parameters during different positions, but overall, there was good consistency between the two methods, providing preliminary evidence for the use of transperineal ultrasonography in clinical settings.

Elevated NLRP3 Inflammasome Levels Correlate With Vitamin D in the Vitreous of Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy.

Front Med (Lausanne)

October 2021

Department of Ophthalmology, Shanghai TCM-Integrated Hospital, Shanghai University of TCM, Shanghai, China.

This study aims to determine vitamin D concentrations in the vitreous and serum, as well as the expression levels of NLRP3 inflammasome pathway in the vitreous of patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). In addition, we investigated the possible correlation between NLRP3 inflammasome levels and vitamin D concentrations. We obtained vitreous samples before vitrectomy from 55 PDR patients, 25 non-diabetic patients with idiopathic macular hole (IMH), and 10 non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) patients.

The pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) involves multiple cell types including endothelial cells, glia, and neurons. It suggests that therapy against single target in single cell type may not be sufficient to treat AD and therapies with protective effects in multiple cell types may be more effective. Here, we comprehensively investigated the effects of bilobalide on neuroinflammation and Aβ degrading enzymes in AD cell model and mouse model.

Exp Ther Med

November 2021

Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Shanghai Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai University of TCM, Shanghai 200071, P.R. China.

Although a number of anti-rheumatic drugs and biologics may be used to alleviate the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), these compounds have been associated with bone loss and joint destruction; thus, alternative treatment approaches are required. In the present study, various plant extracts were evaluated for their capacity to inhibit joint destruction, and saponins (PNS), obtained from the Traditional Chinese Medicine , was identified as such a compound. Therefore, a rabbit antigen-induced arthritis (AIA) model was generated by immunization with ovalbumin in Freund's complete adjuvant, followed by treatment with PNS for 3 months.

Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Shanghai University of TCM, Shanghai 200437, China.

To summarize the application value of acupuncture in perioperative stress response. Perioperative acupuncture can not only effectively relieve pain and stress response during operation, but also relieve psychological stress response represented by preoperative anxiety before operation, and regulate adaptive immune response after operation. Acupuncture, as a safe non-drug therapy, shows its core advantage of participating in the multidisciplinary intervention of enhance recovery after surgery (ERAS).

The hallmarks of allergic airway disease (AAD) include infiltration of inflammatory cells into the bronchoalveolar space. Bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) show anti-inflammatory properties in AAD. In addition, galectin-1 (Gal-1) is a lectin significantly upregulated upon inflammation and is also known to mediate potential anti-inflammatory responses.

Borrowing the open system interconnection (OSI) model of internet protocol and the 5W theory in communication studies, the links in the international communication of acupuncture-moxibustion can be classified into seven layers: physical layer, data link layer, network layer, transport layer, session layer, presentation layer and application layer, therefore it is built an OSI model of international communication system of acupuncture-moxibustion. It is pointed out that present international communication system of acupuncture-moxibustion is similar to the user datagram protocol (UDP) in internet technology. Evidence-based medicine (EBM) plays a key role to modernize acupuncture- moxibustion theory based upon its clinical effects.

[Conduction pathway and function of physical signals of moxibustion stimulus].

Zhongguo Zhen Jiu

May 2021

College of Acupuncture- Moxibustion and Tuina, Shanghai University of TCM, Shanghai 201203.

By reviewing the relevant literature in recent years, this paper analyzes the transformation and conduction of moxibustion physical signals, and explores the action mechanism of moxibustion. It is found that the different molecular targets activated by moxibustion photothermal signal are the keys to transform stimulation signal into biological signal. Photothermal signal transmits signal through neuroendocrine immune system and produces a series of biological reactions, thus regulating the functions of various systems of the body.
