Cognitive decline is an important feature of an aging population. Despite the large body of research investigating the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on cognitive performance, reports of its effectiveness are inconsistent and it is difficult to determine what factors moderate these effects. The purpose of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis of existing randomised controlled trials investigating the effects of HIIT on various domains of cognitive performance, and to further examine the intervention cycle and age-related moderating effects.

March 2025

School of Biomedical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, 200030, China; Zhengzhou Industrial Technology Research Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhengzhou, 450016, China. Electronic address:

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become an increasingly severe threat to global health, and AMR-associated infection is one of the leading causes of death around the world. Due to the long turnaround time and the limited flexibility and availability of current antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) methods, a large portion of patients with bacterial infections are still treated empirically, increasing the risk of mistreatment. To address the demand for precision treatment of bacterial infections, we developed a nano-dilution SlipChip (nd-SlipChip)-based systematic evaluation method, which facilitates rapid, logic feedback for the assessment of antibiotics, antibiotic combinations, and phage therapy.

December 2024

School of Health Science and Engineering, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Shanghai 200093, China; National Grain Industry (Urban Grain and Oil Security) Technology Innovation Center, Shanghai 200093, China. Electronic address:

Oral delivery of macromolecular drugs is often hampered by the harsh gastrointestinal environment, which makes the drugs have poor bioavailability. Insulin, the most used drug for diabetes, also faces the same challenge for oral administration. Hence, we decorated microbial metabolite propionate on chitosan (CS) to fabricate insulin-loaded propionate-modified CS hydrogel nanoparticles (IN-CS/PA HNPs).

January 2025

Department of Nuclear Medicine, Institute of Clinical Nuclear Medicine, Renji Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai 210000, China. Electronic address:

The non-specificity of F-FDG, coupled with high false-positive rates in pancreatitis, underscores an unmet clinical need for using specific positron emission tomography (PET) radiopharmaceuticals in noninvasive pancreatic cancer detection. ST14, a trypsin-like protease and a member of the type II transmembrane serine protease family, is overexpressed in various solid malignancies, including pancreatic cancer. This study aimed to develop a Ga-labeled PET radiopharmaceutical targeting ST14 for pancreatic cancer detection.

Cytosolic thiouridylase is a conserved cytoplasmic tRNA thiolase composed of two different subunits, CTU1 and CTU2. CTU2 serves as a scaffold protein, while CTU1 catalyzes the 2-thiolation at the 34th wobble uridine of the anticodon loop. tRNAGlnUUG, tRNAGluUUC, and tRNALysUUU are the tRNA substrates that are modified with a thiol group at the C2 positions (s2) by CTU1, and also with a methoxycarbonylmethyl group at the C5 positions (mcm5) by Elongator and ALKBH8.

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Molecular Imaging, Jiading District Central Hospital Affiliated Shanghai University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Shanghai 201318, China; College of Pharmacy, Shanghai University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Shanghai 201318, China. Electronic address:

Due to the accumulation of lactate and other acidic metabolites from insufficient blood supply and hypoxia, the acidic microenvironment of tumors not only accelerates tumor growth and spread but may also affect immune cell function, thereby aiding tumor development. Therefore, real-time monitoring of pH fluctuations in intracellular and living systems provides crucial insights into physiological and pathological processes. This research introduced a novel NIR fluorescent probe, termed SOH, for pH imaging in living cells and tumor-bearing mice.

Background: Frailty is a complex aging-related syndrome characterized by a cumulative loss of physiological reserve and increased vulnerability to adverse clinical outcomes, including falls, disability, incapacity and death. While an increasing number of studies suggest that the gut microbiota may play a key role in the pathophysiology of frailty, direct evaluation of the association between gut microbiome alterations and frailty in older adults remains limited.

Aim: To gain insight into gut dysbiosis in frail older adults.

Proprioception plays an important role in joint stability, and ankle sprains usually happen involving plantarflexion, internal rotation, and inversion. However, ankle 3D movement proprioception has never been measured in weight-bearing. Accordingly, the active 3-dimensional movement extent discrimination apparatus (AMEDA-3D) was developed and its reliability and validity were investigated.

Antimicrobial and antioxidant packaging films play a crucial role in extending food shelf life, maintaining quality, and enhancing safety by inhibiting microbial growth and slowing oxidation processes. However, most commercial preservative films suffer from limited antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Moreover, these films are made from petroleum-based materials that degrade into microplastics, resulting in environmental contamination and potential health risks for humans.

Article Synopsis
  • Cognitive restructuring (CR) is a psychological technique for treating depression but is often hard to access, leading researchers to explore a VR-based self-guided training on identifying negative automatic thoughts (NAT).
  • The study involved 20 participants using the VR-STINAT program, which included training modules and post-training homework, measuring effectiveness through assessments and participant feedback.
  • Results showed that the VR-STINAT was well-received with an average satisfaction rating of 80.68%, high accuracy in identifying NAT, and minimal side effects for most participants, but also illuminated challenges and areas for improvement.

Positive lymph node metastasis after radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer is a key factor affecting the prognosis of patients, and its mechanism is complex and multifactorial. The aim of this study is to identify the relevant risk factors for positive lymph node metastasis after radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer, and to construct corresponding predictive models. Through a retrospective analysis of clinical data of 316 gastric cancer patients who underwent radical surgery for gastric cancer, we found that age, maximum tumor diameter, degree of tumor differentiation, vascular invasion, depth of tumor infiltration, and CA199 were important factors affecting lymph node metastasis positivity in gastric cancer patients.
