Hydrogen sulfide (HS) exhibits extensive protective actions in cardiovascular systems, such as anti-inflammatory and stimulating angiogenesis, but its therapeutic potential is severely discounted by the short half-life and the poorly controlled releasing behavior. Herein, we developed a macromolecular HS prodrug by grafting 2-aminopyridine-5-thiocarboxamide (a small-molecule HS donor) on partially oxidized alginate (ALG-CHO) to mimic the slow and continuous release of endogenous HS. In addition, tetraaniline (a conductive oligomer) and adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) were introduced to form a stem cell-loaded conductive HS-releasing hydrogel through the Schiff base reaction between ALG-CHO and gelatin.

The aim of this study is to identify associated factors for the presence of sinus tract and outcome of 2-stage exchange arthroplasty in these patients.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all patients with PJI following hip and knee arthroplasty from 2000 to 2017.
Background: Whether prolonged operative time is an independent risk factor for subsequent surgical site infection (SSI) and periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) following total joint arthroplasty (TJA) remains a clinically significant and underexplored issue. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between operative time and the risk of subsequent SSI and PJI in patients undergoing primary TJA.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 17,342 primary unilateral total knee arthroplasty and total hip arthroplasty performed at a single institution between 2005 and 2016, with a minimum follow-up of 1 year.

Bone marrow (BM) microenvironment appears to play an important role in the pathogenesis of hematological malignancies. Apart from soluble factors and direct cell-cell contact, the extracellular vesicles (EVs) were identified as a third mediator for cell communication within BM microenvironment. Recently, more and more evidences have demonstrated that EVs are also involved in the dysregulation of the BM microenvironment in patients with hematological malignancies.

Despite recent advances in targeted and immune-based therapies, the poor prognosis of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) with bone metastasis (BM) remains a challenge. First, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) was used to identify proteins that were differentially expressed in LUAD with BM, and then matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) was used to identify these proteins. Second, the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) was used to identify mutations in these differentially expressed proteins and Kaplan-Meier plotter (KM Plotter) was used to generate survival curves for the analyzed cases.

We aimed to investigate the role of oxidized low density lipoprotein (ox‑LDL) in tumor necrosis factor‑α (TNF‑α) mediated chondrocyte death and explore the mechanisms. Ten osteoarthritis (OA) and normal control cartilage tissue and synovial fluid (SF) samples were collected, and the expression of lectin‑like ox‑LDL receptor‑1 (LOX‑1) and ox‑LDL level was examined by real time quantitative PCR and enzyme‑linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). An in vitro chondrocyte model was established by the introduction of TNF‑α and ox‑LDL, cell death was analyzed by trypan blue assay and the mechanisms were explored based on the apoptosis related pathway and autophagy pathway.

Local ischemia is the main pathological performance in osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). There is currently no effective therapy to promote angiogenesis in the femoral head. Recent studies revealed that exosomes secreted by induced pluripotent stem cell-derived mesenchymal stem cells (iPS-MSC-Exos) have great therapeutic potential in ischemic tissues, but whether they could promote angiogenesis in ONFH has not been reported, and little is known regarding the underlying mechanism.

Because the surface of the cationic polymer gene complex is positively charged, it can result in problems such as poor blood stability and cytotoxicity. Therefore, reducing the positive charge of the cationic gene complex without affecting its transfection efficiency is crucial. To achieve this objective, a pH-responsive charge-convertible ternary complex was developed in this study.

Metastatic bone disease is a frequent complication of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and causes skeletal-related events, which result in a poor prognosis. Currently, no standard method has been developed to precisely assess the therapeutic response of bone metastases (BM) and the early efficacy of anti-angiogenic therapy, which does not conform to the concept of precision medicine. This study aimed to investigate the usefulness of dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) for precise evaluation of the response to chemotherapy with anti-angiogenic agents in NSCLC patients with BM.

Previous animal studies have shown that long term rat treadmill running induces over-use tendinopathy, which manifests as proteoglycan accumulation and chondrocytes-like cells within the affected tendons. Creating this animal model of tendinopathy by long term treadmill running is however time-consuming, costly and may vary among animals. In this study, we used a new approach to develop an animal model of tendinopathy using kartogenin (KGN), a bio-compound that can stimulate endogenous stem/progenitor cells to differentiate into chondrocytes.

The severe local thermal trauma activates a number of systemic inflammatory mediators, such as TNF-α, NF-κB, resulting in a disruption of gut barrier. The gastrointestinal tight junction (TJ) is highly regulated by membrane-associated proteins including zonula occludens protein-1 (ZO-1) and occludin, which can be modulated by inflammatory cytokines. As splenectomy has been shown to reduce secretion of cytokines, we hypothesized that (1) severe scald injury up-regulates TNF-α and NF-κB, meanwhile down-regulates expression of ZO-1 and occludin, leading to the increased intestinal permeability, and (2) splenectomy can prevent the burn-induced decrease in ZO-1 and occludin expression, resulting in improved intestinal barrier.
