Background: Hypoxic preconditioning refers to a certain intensity and time of hypoxic exposure before hypoxic stress, which makes the body produce endogenous protection to enhance the body's tolerance to subsequent more severe hypoxia. However, there are few studies on the effects of hypoxic preconditioning combined with altitude training on the immune system of athletes.
Methods: Nine swimmers from Shanghai underwent 3-week hypoxic preconditioning [living high-training low (HiLo)] combined with 3-week altitude training.

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) are well-known cytokines with pro-inflammatory capabilities, and have been shown to be involved in adaptation to exercise as multifaceted myokines. However, the precise role of IL-6 and TNF-α during exercise-induced skeletal muscle injury and subsequent repair processes is not fully understood. In this study, IL-6 and TNF-α were examined in soleus muscles at the gene and protein levels using in situ hybridization and immunohistochemical staining, respectively, and serum levels of IL-6 and TNF-α were determined before and after a 90-min downhill running session in rats.

Previous study indicated that Sirtuin 3 (SIRT3) is a central regulator of adaptive thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue (BAT). Here we investigate the role of SIRT3 in the modulation of cellular phenotype in BAT under high salt intake (HS). HS downregulated SIRT3 level in BAT, accompanied by decreased oxygen consumption rate, and caused a severe loss of BAT characteristics.

Manual collection and open-air incineration of waste materials is a common practice in rural regions of China and beyond. Low-temperature combustion of rubber and plastic waste generates high levels of airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). We investigated ten urinary hydroxylated PAH metabolites (OH-PAHs), the oxidative damage biomarker (8-hydroxy-deoxyguanosine, 8-OHdG), and four serum biomarkers including gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in 41 waste collectors and 122 control subjects residing in the same or a distant rural village in Henan Province.

Defective autophagy of monocytes or macrophages might result in NLRP3 inflammasome activation and cause vascular metabolic inflammation. However, the mechanism underlying the initiation of the autophagy response to hyperlipidaemia remains unclear. Sirtuin 3 (SIRT3), an NAD-dependent deacetylase, is sensitive to the metabolic status and mediates adaptation responses.

The branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) including leucine (Leu), isoleucine (Ile) and valine (Val) play a pivotal role in the human body. Herein, we developed capillary electrophoresis (CE) coupled with conventional UV detector to quantify underivatized BCAAs in two kinds of sport nutritional supplements. For direct UV detection at 195 nm, the BCAAs (Leu, two enantiomers of Ile and Val) were separated in a background electrolyte (BGE) consisting of 40.
