Constipation is one of the most common nonmotor symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and often occurs before motor symptoms. Electroacupuncture effectively improves the symptoms of constipation in patients with PD. In the present study, we used thymus cell antigen 1--synuclein (Thy1-Syn) transgenic mice as a model of intestinal motility disorders in PD to determine the therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture and the underlying mechanisms.

Context: Shunfa Jiao, the founder of the major school of scalp acupuncture (SA), and several other authors, have speculated that SA can effectively treat diseases or disorders through needling of the external scalp zones projected from the cerebral cortex's internal function zones that are directly underneath.

Objective: The review intended to analyze and discuss the historical development of Jiao's SA system, the composition of Jiao's SA stimulation zones, and the projection of the cerebral cortex's function zones on the scalp, to correct the shortcomings and inaccuracies of Jiao's hypothesis and accelerate the development of SA and its clinical application based on solid evidence.

Design: The research team performed a narrative review based on the literature currently available.

An estimated 20% of women experience depression at some point during menopause. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT), as the main therapy for depression and other menopausal syndromes, comes with a few undesirable side effects and a potential increase in cancer and cardiovascular risk. Consequently, there is a dire need for the development of new therapies to treat menopausal depression.

December 2022

School of Biological Sciences, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore 637551, Singapore; Department of Microbiology, Tumor, and Cell Biology (MTC), Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm 17177, Sweden. Electronic address:

Cancer is complicated to treat because of its high propensity for recurrence and metastasis, and various side effects of conventional cancer treatments. With the development of nanotechnology, biology, material science and pharmacy, nanoparticles emerge as a promising method to load anti-cancer drugs to deal with the downsides of conventional treatments. Among the various class of nanoparticles, endogenous stimuli-responsive nanoparticles exert significant anti-cancer effects by releasing drugs due to the stimulations from pH gradient, redox as well as other enzymes of cancer microenvironment.

Neuronal toll like receptor 9 contributes to complete Freund's adjuvant-induced inflammatory pain in mice.

Front Mol Neurosci

October 2022

Department of Integrative Medicine and Neurobiology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Shanghai Medical College, Institute of Acupuncture Research, Institutes of Integrative Medicine, Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

Toll like receptor 9 (TLR9) is a critical sensor for danger-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) and a crucial marker of non-sterile/sterile inflammation among all TLRs. However, the significance of TLR9 in inflammatory pain remains unclear. Here, we subcutaneously injected Complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) into the plantar surface of the hind paw, to established a mouse model of inflammatory pain, and we examined expression and distribution of TLR9 in this model.

The curative effect observation of acupuncture for tonifying kidney and removing blood stasis combined with radiofrequency surgery in patients with non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) and the diagnostic efficacy of combined detection of NTx, BGP, and CYFRA21-1 for bone metastases are investigated. 122 NSCLC patients admitted to our hospital from January 2019 to December 2021 are selected for the examination, and the two sets of patients are randomly divided into the study set and the control set using the random number table method, with 61 cases in each set. Patients in the control set are given CT-guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation therapy, and patients in the study set are given a combination of acupuncture therapy for tonifying the kidney and removing blood stasis on the basis of the therapy of the control set.

Minocycline alleviates abnormal microglial phagocytosis of synapses in a mouse model of depression.

Neuropharmacology

December 2022

Department of Integrative Medicine and Neurobiology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University, Shanghai, 200032, China; Shanghai Key Laboratory of Acupuncture Mechanism and Acupoint Function, Fudan University, Shanghai, 200433, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) in mice impacts behaviors, synapses, and microglia related to depression, highlighting a loss of synapses in depressed individuals.
  • It finds that microglia (immune cells in the brain) become overly active and end up engulfing synapses, which is linked to synaptic loss and behavioral issues in the CSDS model.
  • Treatment with minocycline, which inhibits microglial activity, shows positive effects by reducing microglial activation, preventing synaptic loss, and improving behaviors, suggesting that targeting microglial phagocytosis may offer new treatment avenues for depression.

Shared nociceptive dorsal root ganglion neurons participating in acupoint sensitization.

Front Mol Neurosci

August 2022

Translational Research Institute of Brain and Brain-Like Intelligence, Shanghai Fourth People's Hospital, School of Medicine, Tongji University, Shanghai, China.

When the body is under pathological stress (injury or disease), the status of associated acupoints changes, including decreased pain threshold. Such changes in acupoint from a "silent" to an "active" state are considered "acupoint sensitization," which has become an important indicator of acupoint selection. However, the mechanism of acupoint sensitization remains unclear.
