Mesenchymal stem cells have neuroprotective effects that limit damage to the retina and photoreceptors, and which may be mediated by extracellular vesicles (or exosomes) released by mesenchymal stem cells. To investigate the neuroprotective effect of extracellular vesicles derived from umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells on glaucoma, we established rat models of chronic ocular hypertension by injecting conjunctival fibroblasts into the anterior chamber to mimic optic nerve injury caused by glaucoma. One week after injury, extracellular vesicles derived from umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells were injected into the vitreous cavity.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. As such, neuroprotective therapy is essential for the treatment of this disease. Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) is a member of the IL-6 cytokine family and the LIF signaling pathway is considered to be one of the major endogenous factors mediating neuroprotection in the retina.

To development and validation of machine learning-based classifiers based on simple non-ocular metrics for detecting referable diabetic retinopathy (RDR) in a large-scale Chinese population-based survey. The 1,418 patients with diabetes mellitus from 8,952 rural residents screened in the population-based Dongguan Eye Study were used for model development and validation. Eight algorithms [extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), random forest, naïve Bayes, k-nearest neighbor (KNN), AdaBoost, Light GBM, artificial neural network (ANN), and logistic regression] were used for modeling to detect RDR in individuals with diabetes.

Diabetes causes various biochemical changes in the retina; long-term changes in the factors associated with hypoxia and gliosis have rarely been reported. The present study was conducted to explore the changes in these factors in a time-dependent manner in experimental diabetic retinopathy (DR). Diabetes was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin.

In the current study, it was aimed to evaluate the changes in myelinated and unmyelinated nerve fibers in retinal ischemia‑reperfusion injuries caused by acute ocular hypertension and to determine the sequence of these changes. Adult healthy New Zealand white rabbits were randomized to the hemodynamic group [n=12; used to determine the optimal intraocular pressure (IOP) for the subsequent experiments] and the hypertension group (n=6; 70‑mmHg hypertension induced in one eye). IOP was adjusted using a cannula and saline.

Background: Low vision, along with cataract, trachoma, onchocerciasis, childhood blindness and refractive error, is one of the priorities in the global initiative, VISION 2020-The Right to Sight. The purpose of this study was to characterize the traits of patients presenting at a low vision clinic in China.
Methods: A retrospective study was conducted of the records of 299 patients who visited the Low Vision Clinic of Eye and ENT Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University from January 2009 to May 2014.
