Colorectal cancer (CRC), a commonly occurring malignant tumor in the gastrointestinal tract, is the third leading cause of cancer‑related deaths worldwide. FK506‑binding proteins (FKBPs) comprise an immunophilin family that are involved in the carcinogenesis, progression and chemoresistance of cancers, including CRC. FKBP3 (also known as FKBP25) is a nuclear protein that is a member of the FKBP family and is correlated with the activity of histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2).

Shikonin, a natural naphthoquinone isolated from a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, which exerts anticancer effects in various cancers. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of shikonin against endometrioid endometrial cancer (EEC) have not yet been fully elucidated. Herein, we investigated anticancer effects of shikonin on EEC cells and explored the underlying molecular mechanism.

The clinical value of SIRT1 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains controversial. This meta-analysis was performed to investigate the prognostic and clinicopathological significance of the histone deacetylase SIRT1 in HCC. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) for survival outcomes and pooled odds ratios (ORs) for clinical parameters associated with SIRT1 were calculated in nine studies using Review Manager.

Vasculogenic mimicry (VM) plays an important role in colorectal cancer (CRC) metastasis, and both hypoxia and the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) are necessary for VM. In this study, HIF-1α expression was upregulated in the VM-positive CRC cell line HCT-116 and thereby affected the expression of the EMT-related markers Claudin-4, E-cadherin (E-cd) and Vimentin(VIM). SB431542 and U0126EtOH, which can inhibit of EMT were used to treat HCT-116 and HCT-8 in these experiments.

Background: Yi Ai Fang (YAF), a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula, has been identified to have anticancer activity in our previously studies. The present study aimed to explore the potential mechanism of YAF suppression of VM on colorectal cancer (CRC) in vitro and in vivo.
Methods: Cell viability was measured by CCK-8 assay.

Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are important in tumor angiogenesis. Stromal cell-derived factor-1α (SDF-1α) and its receptor C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4) are key in stem cell homing. Melittin, a component of bee venom, exerts antitumor activity, however, the underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated.

Both oncoprotein and tumor-suppressor activity have been reported for SIRTUIN1 (SIRT1) and p38 in many types of cancer. The effect of SIRT1 on p38 phosphorylation (p-p38) remains controversial and may be organ- and cell-specific. We found that SIRT1 is essential for maintaining liver size and weight in mice.

Nestin, a member of type VI intermediate filament protein family, is widely expressed in mammalian nervous tissue and stem/precursor cells of non-neuronal normal tissues. Nestin has also been investigated to determine possible tumor-promoting functions. However, whether Nestin is involved in colorectal cancer (CRC) cells remains unclear.

Background: Pingchuan Formula (PCF) is a traditional Chinese recipe. PCF improves chronic airway inflammation by correcting the imbalance of T-helper cell ratio. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of PCF on pathological changes in the lungs of asthmatic mice in terms of Treg/Th17 balance.

Both Cluster of Differentiation 166 (CD166) and Melanoma Cell Adhesion Molecule (MCAM) play critical roles in maintaining transformative phenotype of Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) cells. However, the relationship between these two membrane proteins remains unknown. Here, we found that CD166 has a positive impact on the expression of MCAM, while MCAM has no feedback on CD166.

Background/aims: Adenomyosis is a disease in which ectopic endometrial glands and stromal cells appear in the uterine myometrium. Despite its prevalence, the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of adenomyosis are largely unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of miR-10b and its target genes ZEB1 and PIK3CA in adenomyosis.

Recent studies are indicative for strong carcinogenetic roles of Runt related transcription factor 2 (Runx2) and Yes associated protein (YAP) in several cancer types. However, whether and how the interaction between Runx2 and YAP plays a role in liver tumorigenesis still remain illusive. Here, we identified a close relationship between Runx2 and YAP in liver cancer cells.

We quantitatively assessed this association by conducting a meta-analysis based on the evidence from observational studies.
Methods: We searched PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library for relevant studies published up to and including December 31, 2013.

Cluster of differentiation 166 (CD166) is critical for liver cancer cell survival. Our previously study demonstrated that CD166 exerts its anti-apoptotic role through interaction with YAP in liver cancer. However, the interaction between CD166 and other cell surface molecules remains unclear in liver cancer cells.

Cluster of differentiation 166 (CD166) is a cell surface membrane protein, which is regarded as a valuable prognostic marker in several types of epithelial tumors. We previously reported that CD166 exerts its pro-carcinogenic role by enhancing YAP function in liver cancer cells. However, YAP cannot completely rescue the increased anti‑carcinogenic effects by gene silencing of CD166, whose downstream effectors require further investigation.
