Swiprosin-1 participates in the berberine-regulated AMPK/MLCK pathway to attenuate colitis-induced tight junction damage.

Phytomedicine

December 2024

Department of Pharmacy, Shanghai Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai 200071, China. Electronic address:

Background And Purpose: Activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is essential in maintaining the epithelial tight junction (TJ) barrier. Berberine, a phytochemical AMPK agonist, has been widely reported to ameliorate colitis. Berberine or AMPK activation inhibits cytoskeletal contraction induced by myosin light chain kinase (MLCK), thereby ameliorating TJ barrier defects.

Recent insights into contributing factors in the pathogenesis of cirrhotic ascites.

Front Med (Lausanne)

September 2024

Department of Hepatology, Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai, China.

Cirrhotic ascites refers to the accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity due to severe liver disease and impaired liver function, which leads to poor blood circulation in the body, increased pressure in the hepatic sinus wall, and the exudation of fluid from the plasma into the peritoneal cavity. Cirrhotic ascites is a common complication of cirrhosis and poses a threat to the health and lives of modern people, causing a heavy social burden worldwide. So far, there are no effective treatment methods available to improve the quality and quantity of life for patients and their partners; existing drugs can only alleviate the symptoms of cirrhotic ascites and slow down its progression.

ACE2 Alleviates Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress and Protects against Pyroptosis by Regulating Ang1-7/Mas in Ventilator-Induced Lung Injury.

Front Biosci (Landmark Ed)

September 2024

Department of Pulmonary Disease, Shanghai Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 200071 Shanghai, China.

Background: Ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) is a consequence of inflammation and increased alveolar-capillary membrane permeability due to alveolar hyperdistention or elevated intrapulmonary pressure, but the precise mechanisms remain unclear. The aim of the study was to analyze the mechanism by which angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) alleviates endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and protects alveolar cells from pyroptosis in VILI by regulating angiotensin (Ang)1-7/Mas.

Methods: VILI was induced in mice by mechanical ventilation by regulating the tidal volume.

Sonopiezocatalytic therapy is an emerging therapeutic strategy that utilizes ultrasound irradiation to activate piezoelectric materials, inducing polarization and energy band bending to facilitate the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the efficient generation of ROS is hindered by the long distance of charge migration from the bulk to the material surface. Herein, atomically thin BiO(OH)(NO) (AT-BON) nanosheets are rationally engineered through disrupting the weaker hydrogen bonds within the [OH] and [NO] layer in the bulk material.

Addressing the inefficiency of current therapeutic approaches for hepatocellular carcinoma is an urgent and pressing challenge. PANoptosis, a form of inflammatory programmed cell death, presents a dependable strategy for combating cancer by engaging multiple cell death pathways (apoptosis, pyroptosis, and necroptosis). In this study, an ultrasmall BiSnO nanozyme with ultrasound-magnified multienzyme-mimicking properties is designed and engineered as a PANoptosis inducer through destroying the mitochondrial function of tumor cells and enhancing the intracellular accumulation of toxic reactive oxygen species, finally triggering the activation of PANoptosis process.
