Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a serious microvascular complication of diabetes characterized by structural and functional changes of kidneys. Human renal tubular epithelial (HK-2) cells are important for kidney recovery post injury and usually used for establishment of DN cell models. The study explored the role of microRNA (miR)-133a-3p in DN cell model and animal model.

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are important immune cells in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Previous studies have shown that TAMs play a dual role in the development of colorectal cancer and promote the additional exploration of the immune escape of colorectal cancer. Studies have confirmed that macrophages utilize amino acid metabolism under the stimulation of some factors released by tumor cells, thus affecting the direction of polarization.

Background: Brucellosis is a quite normal zoonotic infection, which is caused by immediate contact with animals infected with Brucella or its products. IL-10 (- 1082 G/A, - 819 C/T, - 592C/A) and IL-6 -174 G/C polymorphisms have a great relationship with IL-10 and IL-6 production, which brings about Brucellosis pathogenesis and development. So far, the results of published literatures were controversial.

Background: Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) is an important member of TLRs, which is significant in the initial of inflammatory response against bacteria. Several studies have been conducted to investigate the TLR2 Arg677Trp polymorphism and Tuberculosis (TB) susceptibility. Unfortunately, the results of previous studies were inconsistent.

Background: Accelerated muscle atrophy is associated with a three-fold increase in mortality in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. It is suggested that hyperphosphatemia might contribute to muscle wasting, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Although evidence indicates that autophagy is involved in the maintenance of muscle homeostasis, it is not known if high phosphate levels can result in activation of autophagy, leading to muscle protein loss.

Background: As a factor contributing to the tumor cell drug resistance, tumor microenvironment (TME) is being paid increasingly attention. However, the drug resistance of malignantly transformed cells in TME has rarely been revealed. This paper is designed to investigate the sensitivity of malignantly transformed cell line (ihDCTC) induced by glioma stem cells (GSCs) in TME to chemotherapeutic drugs.

Background: Surgical patients are asked to fast for a sufficient duration to ensure that the amount of residual liquid in the stomach is within the safe range, thereby reducing the risk of gastric reflux perioperatively. The authors hypothesized that subjective hunger numerical rating scale (NRS) score could also help assess the process of gastric emptying and determine the amount of fluid remaining in the stomach.
Methods: The current study consisted of healthy volunteers recruited by advertisement and mutual introduction.

Objective: For the purpose of an early identification of intervention targets for acute spinal cord injury (ASCI), we investigated the changes in expression levels of microRNA-9 (miR-9) and MCPIP1 in rat ASCI model.
Method: A total of 108 healthy rats were randomly divided into non-ASCI group (n=18) and five ASCI groups, 6h, 12h, 24h, 3 days and 7 days, representing the experimental time points following ASCI (n=18 per group). Hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining was used to assess the ASCI damage, and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) and in situ hybridization (ISH) were employed for the detection of miR-9 and MCPIP1 mRNA expression.

Local recurrence is a major clinical challenge after primary rectal cancer surgery. Although there is a possibility that R0 resection can be achieved, the outcome is still not favorable due to the low R0 resection rate and complexity of the surgery. Therefore prevention has a higher priority over treatment afterwards.

Ketoacids (KA) are known to preserve muscle mass among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on a low-protein diet (LPD). The present study was to compare the effects of KA supplemented diet therapy in autophagy and inflammation in CKD rats' skeletal muscle. Rats with 5/6 nephrectomy were randomly divided into three groups and fed with either 11 g/kg/day protein [normal-protein diet (NPD)], 3 g/kg/day protein (LPD) or 3 g/kg/day protein which including 5% protein plus 1% KA (LPD + KA) for 24 weeks.

Oridonin, a diterpenoid isolated from Rabdosia rubescens, has been proven to possess various pharmacological and physiological effects such as anti-inflammation, anti-bacterial, and anti-neoplastic, although in recent years, more attention has been paid to its anti-neoplastic effects. For example, oridonin can trigger cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, and autophagy in different neoplastic cell lines. This review summarizes the considerable knowledge about the action mechanisms of oridonin that has been studied in recent years.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between the promoter polymorphism of IL-4 and IL-6 and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS).
Methods: One hundred and twenty-three patients with CRS and 239 healthy controls in Shanghai region were chosen in this study. The genotype of IL-4 gene -33T>C and -590C>T were determined using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method and the genotype of IL-10 gene -1082A>G was determined using amplification refractory mutation system-polymerase chain reaction (ARMS-PCR) method.

This study was aimed to explore the effect of arsenic trioxide (ATO) on proliferation and apoptosis of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) cell lines and the underlying mechanisms of the apoptosis. MCL cell lines (jeko-1, mino, JVM-2) were treated with different concentrations of ATO, then growth profile of these cells were detected by MTT. Apoptosis of ATO-treated jeko-1 cells were detected by flow cytometry with Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining.
