Patients with sepsis-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) have higher mortality and poor prognosis than pneumonia-induced ARDS. Pulmonary fibrosis is an irreversible accumulation of connective tissue in the interstitium of the lung and closely associated with the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of type II alveolar epithelial cells (AECIIs). Therefore, it is undoubtedly worth studying whether the EMT of AECIIs in sepsis-induced ARDS patients is different from that in patients with pneumonia-induced ARDS in the regulatory mechanism.

Background: Epigenetic marks (eg, DNA methylation) may capture the effect of gene-environment interactions. DNA methylation is involved in blood pressure (BP) regulation and hypertension development; however, no studies have evaluated its relationship with 24-hour BP phenotypes (daytime, nighttime, and 24-hour average BPs).

Methods: We examined the association of whole blood DNA methylation with 24-hour BP phenotypes and clinic BPs in a discovery cohort of 281 Blacks participants using reduced representation bisulfite sequencing.

Exogenous stem cell therapy (SCT) has been recognized recently as a promising neuroregenerative strategy to augment recovery in stroke survivors. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are the primary source of stem cells used in the majority of both pre-clinical and clinical studies in stroke. In the absence of evidence-based guidelines on the use of SCT in stroke patients, understanding the progress of MSC research across published studies will assist researchers and clinicians in better achieving success in translating research.

Aim: To test whether DNA samples stored for a prolonged period (20 years) under various storage conditions could be used for comparative methylation studies using reduced representation bisulfite sequencing.

Patients & Methods: Five groups of human blood DNA samples (n = 5-6/group) were compared. The groupings were based on the anticoagulant used and storage temperature and duration.

Cisplatin is a commonly used chemotherapy drug for prostate cancer (PC). However, some PCs are resistant to cisplatin treatment, while the molecular mechanisms underlying the resistance of PCs to cisplatin are not completely understood. In this study, we found that cisplatin dose-dependently activated Beclin-1 in two PC cell lines, PC3 and LNCap.

Objective: To study the histogenesis of giant cell tumor (GCT) and factors related to tumor recurrence, invasiveness and malignant transformation.

Methods: The clinical features, radiologic classification, surgical approach, pathologic findings, immunophenotypes and follow-up data of 123 cases of GCT were analyzed.

Results: There was a significant correlation between tumor recurrence and radiographic classification (P = 0.

Objective: To compare laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication (LNF)and Toupet laparoscopic fundoplication (LTF) with respect to treatment outcomes and postoperative complications.

Methods: PubMed, Medline, Embase and the Cochrane Library were searched. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing laparoscopic Nissen and Toupet fundoplication were included.

Objective: Analyze the immunophenotype of the different cells in the various subtypes of giant cell tumor of tendon sheath (GCTS) and investigate the value of clusterin in pathological diagnosis and histogenesis of giant cell tumor of tendon sheath.

Methods: A total of 104 cases of GCTS from the surgical pathology files of Shanghai Jiaotong university affiliated the sixth people's hospital were identified. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) for clusterin, desmin, CD163, CD68, p63, p53, Ki-67 and CD35 was performed on all cases, using EnVision technique.

Objective: To study the clinicopathologic characteristics of peripheral neuroblastic tumors and to investigate the prognostic significance of International Neuroblastoma Pathology Classification (INPC).

Methods: One hundred and thirty-five cases of peripheral neuroblastic tumors encountered in Shanghai Children's Medical Center were enrolled into the study. All the cases were classified according to INPC and International Neuroblastoma Staging System (INSS).
