To compare outcomes between single-incision laparoscopic totally extra-peritoneal sub-lay (SIL-TES) mesh repair and laparoscopic intraperitoneal onlay mesh (IPOM) repair of ventral hernia (VH). A retrospective selection of 104 patients who underwent VH repair (50 and 54 in the SIL-TES and IPOM groups, respectively) was made. Patient data were collected, and quality of life was evaluated using Carolinas Comfort Scale (CCS) 1 month and 3 months after surgery.

J Microbiol Immunol Infect

December 2021

Department of Laboratory Medicine, Renji Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai 200127, China. Electronic address:

Background: Oxacillin-susceptible mecA-positive Staphylococcus aureus (OS-MRSA) represents an important issue, as its oxacillin susceptibility has contributed to misidentification by conventional susceptibility tests and consequently potential therapeutic failure, but limited data on the current status of OS-MRSA infection in Chinese hospitals are available.

Methods: This multicenter study performed a battery of susceptibility tests and diagnostic tests for 956 S. aureus isolates from 10 hospitals, including automated susceptibility testing on VITEK 2, broth microdilution, disk diffusion, and detection of PBB2a, mecA gene and mecC gene.

Mutations to are recurrent in lung adenocarcinomas (LUAD) and are daunting to treat due to the difficulties in KRAS oncoprotein inhibition. A possible resolution to this problem may lie with co-mutations to other genes that also occur in -driven LUAD that may provide alternative therapeutic vulnerabilities. Approximately 3% of -mutant LUADs carry functional mutations in gene encoding neurofibromin-1, a negative regulator of focal adhesion kinase 1 (FAK1).

miR-193a-3p inhibition of the Slug activator PAK4 suppresses non-small cell lung cancer aggressiveness via the p53/Slug/L1CAM pathway.

Cancer Lett

April 2019

Anhui Clinical and Preclinical Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease, Department of Respiration, First Affiliated Hospital, Bengbu Medical College, Bengbu, Anhui Province, China. Electronic address:

L1 cell adhesion molecule (L1CAM) promotes invasiveness and metastasis in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells and is upregulated by the p53-regulated transcription factor Slug. p21-activated kinase 4 (PAK4) directly phosphorylates Slug, resulting in pro-malignant Slug stabilization. We hypothesized that microRNA-based negative regulation of PAK4 would reduce L1CAM-induced NSCLC aggressiveness via destabilizing Slug.

Focal inflammation and remyelination failure are major hallmarks of multiple sclerosis and its animal model, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). In this study, we found that leonurine, a bioactive alkaloid, alleviated EAE disease severity along with reduced central nervous system inflammation and myelin damage. During the pathogenesis of EAE, leonurine dramatically suppressed the recruitment of encephalitogenic T cells into the central nervous system, whereas did not impair periphery immune responses and microglia activation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) subtypes and their clinical features in southern China, focusing on comparisons between demyelinating (AIDP) and axonal forms (AMAN), particularly how infections and age impact severity.
  • A retrospective review of 1,056 patients' medical records from 31 hospitals between 2013 to 2016 reveals that AIDP is the most common subtype, while AMAN tends to present more severely and with distinct preceding infections.
  • Findings suggest that prior respiratory infections are linked to AIDP, while gastrointestinal infections correlate with more severe AMAN cases; age also influences disease severity and recovery, with children and the elderly being affected more severely.

Over-expression of CHAF1A in Epithelial Ovarian Cancer can promote cell proliferation and inhibit cell apoptosis.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Shanghai Jiaotong University Affiliated First People's Hospital, 650# XinSongJiang Road, Shanghai, 201600, China. Electronic address:

Chromatin Assembly Factor 1, subunit A (CHAF1A) can regulate cell proliferation, DNA repair and epigenetic changes in embryonic stem cells and it has been reported that over-expression of CHAF1A is associated with several human diseases including cancer. However, the expression and function of CHAF1A in Epithelial Ovarian Cancer (EOC) are rarely reported at present. In this study, we found that the positive staining of CHAF1A in EOC was higher than that in normal tissues and over-expression of CHAF1A was strongly associated with cancer stage and lymph node metastasis.

CNTF-ACM promotes mitochondrial respiration and oxidative stress in cortical neurons through upregulating L-type calcium channel activity.

Mol Cell Biochem

September 2016

Department of Respiration, Anhui Clinical and Preclinical Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease, The First Affiliated Hospital of Bengbu Medical College, No. 287 Changhuai Road, Bengbu, 233000, Anhui, China.

A specialized culture medium termed ciliary neurotrophic factor-treated astrocyte-conditioned medium (CNTF-ACM) allows investigators to assess the peripheral effects of CNTF-induced activated astrocytes upon cultured neurons. CNTF-ACM has been shown to upregulate neuronal L-type calcium channel current activity, which has been previously linked to changes in mitochondrial respiration and oxidative stress. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate CNTF-ACM's effects upon mitochondrial respiration and oxidative stress in rat cortical neurons.

The genetic regulation of cell cycle progression and cell proliferation plays a role in the growth of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), one of the most common causes of cancer-related mortality. Although DEAD-box RNA helicases are known to play a role in cancer development, including lung cancer, the potential involvement of the novel family member DDX51 has not yet been investigated. In the current study we assessed the role of DDX51 in NSCLC using a siRNA-based approach.

CNTF-Treated Astrocyte Conditioned Medium Enhances Large-Conductance Calcium-Activated Potassium Channel Activity in Rat Cortical Neurons.

Neurochem Res

August 2016

Department of Respiration, Anhui Clinical and Preclinical Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease, The First Affiliated Hospital of Bengbu Medical College, No. 287 Changhuai Road, Bengbu, Anhui, 233000, China.

Seizure activity is linked to astrocyte activation as well as dysfunctional cortical neuron excitability produced from changes in calcium-activated potassium (KCa) channel function. Ciliary neurotrophic factor-treated astrocyte conditioned medium (CNTF-ACM) can be used to investigate the peripheral effects of activated astrocytes upon cortical neurons. However, CNTF-ACM's effect upon KCa channel activity in cultured cortical neurons has not yet been investigated.
