Infection with porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) results in enormous economic damage to the global swine industry. PEDV starts its life cycle by binding to the receptors of host cells and adsorbing onto the cellular surfaces. However, it is still unknown how PEDV adsorbs onto the surface of host cells and the mechanism beneath the interplay of host cell transmembrane protein with PEDV proteins.

Differential depletion of GluN2A induces heterogeneous schizophrenia-related phenotypes in mice.

EBioMedicine

April 2024

Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Biology and Chemistry, Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, No.100 Haike Rd., Pudong New District, Shanghai 201210, China. Electronic address:

Background: Schizophrenia, a debilitating psychiatric disorder, displays considerable interindividual variation in clinical presentations. The ongoing debate revolves around whether this heterogeneity signifies a continuum of severity linked to a singular causative factor or a collection of distinct subtypes with unique origins. Within the realm of schizophrenia, the functional impairment of GluN2A, a subtype of the NMDA receptor, has been associated with an elevated risk.

In brief: The impact of HVJ-E employed in mitochondrial replacement techniques (MRTs) on embryonic development remains uncertain. This study has exhibited the influence of HVJ-E utilized in MRTs on embryonic development and has devised a novel HVJ-E-induced fusion approach to curtail the amount of HVJ-E employed in MRTs. Abstract: Mitochondrial replacement techniques (MRTs) provide a viable option for women carrying pathogenic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variants to conceive disease-free offspring with a genetic connection.

Heterogeneous dermal fibroblasts are the main components that constitute the dermis. Distinct fibroblast subgroups show specific characteristics and functional plasticity that determine dermal structure during skin development and wound healing. Although researchers have described the roles of fibroblast subsets, this is not completely understood.

Aims: Adenomas of the ciliary body epithelium, including adenoma of the pigmented ciliary body epithelium (APCE) and adenoma of the non-pigmented ciliary body epithelium (ANPCE), are extremely rare, and most knowledge about them comes from sporadic case reports. The purpose of this study was to provide a comprehensive understanding of adenomas of the ciliary body epithelium and to identify the similarities and differences between APCE and ANPCE.

Methods: This study was a retrospective case series comprising data from 41 patients obtained from retrieved publications and five cases diagnosed at the Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital.

Introduction: Primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) is a leading cause of irreversible blindness globally, and the number of patients with PACG rises every year. Yet, there is a lack of knowledge about the clinical characteristics, therapeutic options and profile of patients with PACG in China. Hence, we design the China Glaucoma Treatment Pattern Study Ⅰ-Primary Angle-Closure Glaucoma (Ch-GTPⅠ).

Background: Anti-TNF therapy has been found to exert an influence on long-term nutritional status and even reverse malnutrition in patients with Crohn's disease.

Aims: to observe the effect of anti-TNF therapy on nutritional status in patients with Crohn's disease, investigate the correlation between the timing of anti-TNF therapy and the human body composition and examine independent body composition factors for predicting malnutrition in these patients.

Methods: This was a retrospective study of 115 patients with Crohn's disease.

Esketamine, the right-handed optical isomer of racemic ketamine, has recently become widely used for anesthesia and analgesia as a replacement for racemic ketamine. However, there are limited studies comparing the anesthetic and analgesic effects of esketamine and racemic ketamine in mice. This research was conducted to analyze the dose-dependent anesthetic and analgesic efficacy of esketamine in mice and to compare its potency with that of the racemate.

Background And Aims: Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) is the most effective treatment strategy for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Nevertheless, dysregulated inflammation induced by myocardial reperfusion injury may increase the final infarct size and induce maladaptive myocardial remodeling. Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 (PCSK9) inhibitor, as a novel and potent lipid-lowering drug, plays an important role in inflammation.

Liquid-Solid Structural Evolution & Processing of Materials (Ministry of Education), School of Materials Science and Engineering, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong 250061, P. R. China.

The development of novel electrode materials for rapid and sensitive detection of neurotransmitters in the human body is of great significance for early disease diagnosis and personalized therapy. Herein, gold nanorod@zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (AuNR@ZIF-8) core-shell nanostructures were prepared by controlled encapsulation of gold nanorods within a ZIF-8 assembly. The designed AuNR@ZIF-8 nanostructures have uniform morphology, good dispersion, a large specific surface area, and an average size of roughly 175 nm.

Article Synopsis
  • Intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD) is a serious condition that lacks effective prevention or treatment methods, and it is linked to the interactions between bile acids, gut microbiota, and the host's immune system.
  • Research indicates that disruptions in the bile acid-gut microbiota (BA-GM) axis contribute to the development of IFALD through changes in bile acid ratios and gut bacteria, leading to immune and metabolic issues in the liver.
  • Future treatment strategies may involve personalized therapies targeting different aspects of the BA-GM axis, which could enhance management of IFALD and improve patient outcomes.*

Introduction: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are complex multifactorial disorders. Reversible treatment has been suggested for the initial management of TMD; however, comparable therapeutic effects of different reversible intervention modalities remain controversial. Various biopsychosocial factors, which may be putative prognostic factors that influence the response to reversible treatment for TMD, have been reported to increase the risk of developing first-onset TMD.

Branched-Chain Amino Acid Catabolism Promotes Thrombosis Risk by Enhancing Tropomodulin-3 Propionylation in Platelets.

Circulation

July 2020

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Cell Biology (Y.X., H.J., X.F., L.Z., J.L.), Key Laboratory of Cell Differentiation and Apoptosis of Chinese Ministry of Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, China.

Background: Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), essential nutrients including leucine, isoleucine, and valine, serve as a resource for energy production and the regulator of important nutrient and metabolic signals. Recent studies have suggested that dysfunction of BCAA catabolism is associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease. Platelets play an important role in cardiovascular disease, but the functions of BCAA catabolism in platelets remain unknown.
