Background And Aim: Recurrent laryngeal nerve injury is a common severe complication in neck surgery, which can cause varying degrees of vocal fold paralysis and respiratory tract problems. In present study, the effects of laminin-binding brain derived neurotrophic factor (LBD-BDNF) on recurrent laryngeal nerve regeneration were explored and its possible mechanism was investigated.
Methods: LBD-BDNF or NAT-BDNF (BDNF without LBD binding) treatment was performed in laryngeal nerve injured rabbits for sixteen weeks.

Locoregional staging and prognostic information play a critical role in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) treatment strategies. Although microRNA (miRNA) is a promising marker for cancer detection, the relationship between circulating plasma miRNAs and ESCC remains unclear. Our study aims to investigate the association between circulating plasma miRNAs and tumor diagnosis or prognosis in ESCC patients.

Aims: Musashi-1, a RNA-binding protein, is suggested to be a cancer stem cell-related marker; its high level of protein expression is reported to be associated with high histological grade in some tumors. The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of Musashi-1 in patients with endometrioid adenocarcinoma (EAC).
Methods: We examined the Musashi-1 mRNA expression level in 35 fresh EAC tissue samples and 15 normal endometrium samples by real-time RT-PCR, and its protein expression level in 148 paraffin EAC tissue samples and 20 paraffin normal endometrium samples by immunohistochemistry.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the tumor and apoptotic effects of dihydromethysticin kavalactone against human osteosarcoma (MG-63) cells. Antiproliferative activity was measured with the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Apoptosis induction by dihydromethysticin was demonstrated by fluorescence microscopy, quantitative videomicroscopy and Annexin V-FITC apoptosis detection kit.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) plays plays an important role in nosocomial infection. To explore the heteroresistance of PA to imipenem (IMP), we detected the sensitivity of 140 strains of PA to IMP using the KB method and VITEK method. Combined with resistance mutation analysis, the heteroresistance of PA to IMP was determined.

Slightly focused high-energy shockwave (HESW) therapy is characterized by a wide focal area, a large therapy zone, easy positioning and less pain during treatment. The objective of this study was to perform for the first time an in vivo test of the slightly focused HESWs for osteoporotic fractures. Bilateral proximal tibial osteotomies were made in 30 ovariectomized (OVX) Sprague-Dawley rats and secured with internal fixation.

Introduction: Few serum markers are valid and useful for the diagnosis or therapeutic effect monitoring of osteosarcoma. This study aimed to investigate the role of β-isomerized C-terminal telopeptides (β-CTx) and total procollagen type 1 amino-terminal propeptide (tP1NP) as serological biomarkers for osteosarcoma patients.
Materials And Methods: A total of 48 patients with osteosarcoma and 55 healthy volunteers were investigated.

Membrane type 1 matrix metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP) has been demonstrated to play an important role in tumor progression. The aim of the present study was to analyze the expression of MT1-MMP in breast cancer and its correlation with clinicopathologic characteristics, including the survival of breast cancer patients. In our results, MT-MMP1 was up-expressed in breast cancer tissues compared with ductal hyperplasia tissues in microarray data (GSE2429).

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of polymorphisms in NER and HRR pathways on the response to cisplatin-based treatment and clinical outcome in osteosarcoma patients. 214 osteosarcoma patients treated with cisplatin-based chemotherapy were collected between January 2008 and January 2011. Genotypes of ERCC1 rs11615, ERCC2 rs1799793 and rs13181, NBN rs709816, RAD51 rs1801320, and XRCC3 rs861539 were conducted by Polymerase Chain Reaction Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assay.

The dysbiosis of the human intestinal microbiota is linked to sporadic colorectal carcinoma (CRC). The present study was designed to investigate the gut microbiota distribution features in CRC patients. We performed pyrosequencing based analysis of the 16S rRNA gene V3 region to investigate microbiota of the cancerous tissue and adjacent non-cancerous normal tissue in proximal and distal CRC samples.

Lung cancer (LCa) is one of the most common and deadly malignancies in elderly patients. During the course of the disease, these patients frequently present with lower respiratory tract infection. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the clinical features of lower respiratory tract infection in elderly LCa patients and evaluate the impact on overall survival rate.

ATP-binding cassette, subfamily G, member 2 (ABCG2) overexpression has been associated with multidrug resistance and cancer progression by promoting proliferation and/or suppressing apoptosis, but how this process happens remains to be determined. In this study, the roles and the mechanisms of ABCG2 in the progression of Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) were investigated. We found that introduction of ABCG2 siRNA into Hep-2 and Hep-2T cells significantly enhanced the intracellular accumulation of mitoxantrone (MX).

Aims/introduction: To compare carotid and lower limb atherosclerotic lesions, and examine if carotid atherosclerotic lesions are in line with lower limb atherosclerotic lesions, and can reflect generalized atherosclerosis in inpatients with type 2 diabetes.
Materials And Methods: This was an observational study carried out in 867 Chinese inpatients with type 2 diabetes, including 573 previously known and 294 newly diagnosed patients. Ultrasonographic assessments of intima-media thickness (IMT), plaques, and stenosis in the carotid and lower limb arteries were evaluated.

Aims/introduction: Patients with type 2 diabetes are known to show elevated serum levels of carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9). The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible relationships of CA19-9 with metabolic control, insulin resistance (IR), and pancreatic β-cell function in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes who underwent Roux-En-Y gastric bypass (RYGB).
Materials And Methods: The present study included 81 healthy volunteers, and 33 patients diagnosed with obesity and type 2 diabetes who underwent RYGB.
Aims/introduction: To investigate the prevalence and associated risk factors of microalbuminuria, and to explore the relationship between albuminuria and cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Materials And Methods: A nationally representative sample of 38,203 Chinese participants was categorized by different levels of urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR; 0 -10 mg/g, 10 -20 mg/g, 20 -30 mg/g, 30 -300 mg/g). The prevalence of albuminuria was compared by using a single urinary ACR cut-off point and by sex-specific ACR cut-off points.

Early-stage endometrial carcinoma (EC) patients have a high cure rate; however, those with high-risk factors may have poor prognosis. Thus, there is an urgent need for searching for new prognostic molecules to more accurately predict survival of patients. We detected the Rictor mRNA expression level in 30 fresh EC tissue and 17 normal endometrial tissue samples with real-time quantitative RT-PCR and Rictor protein expression level in 134 (test cohort) and 115 (validation cohort) paraffin tissue samples by immunohistochemistry, analyzed the correlation between variables and overall survival (OS) using Cox proportional hazards regression, compared the prognostic accuracy of Rictor with other clinicopathological risk factors by logistic regression.
