This paper attempts to analyze the random fatigue life and failure modes of joints using two calculation methods. Three kinds of tests were carried out, which were the static test, constant amplitude fatigue test and the random fatigue test, and four kinds of joints were designed. After the static test, the joint was subjected to a constant amplitude fatigue test by selecting different percentages of load according to the static strength.

Mg alloy AZ31B was directly bonded to SK7 with a low alloy content, DP980 with a high Mn content, 316L with a high Cr and high Ni content by laser-gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and hybrid direct lap welding. The results showed that the tensile loads of AZ31B/SK7 and AZ31B/DP980 joints were 283 N/mm and 285 N/mm respectively, while the tensile load of AZ31B/316L joint was only 115 N/mm. The fracture and interface microstructures were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), and identified through X-ray diffractometry (XRD).

Based on the classical grid theory and related regulations, a structure model of a fiber-wound composite gas cylinder was designed in this paper. Based on the design results, a finite element model of a fully wound composite cylinder of an aluminum alloy inner liner with a working pressure of 35 MPa was established based on the ABAQUS software, and its stress distribution under working pressure and minimum burst pressure was analyzed. According to engineering experience, the pressure tolerance of composite cylinders can be improved by proper autofrettage pressure before working pressure, so the influence of autofrettage pressure was analyzed in this paper.

Nonlinear guided elastic waves have attracted extensive attention owing to their high sensitivity to microstructural changes. However, based on the widely used second harmonics, third harmonics and static components, it is still difficult to locate the micro-defects. Perhaps the nonlinear mixing of guided waves can solve these problems since their modes, frequencies and propagation direction can be flexibly selected.

Key Laboratory of Intelligent Industrial Equipment Technology of Hebei Province, Hebei University of Engineering, Handan 056038, China.

In this paper, the abnormal fracture failure of a ZL104 aluminum alloy quick-opening manhole cover of a cement tank truck is systematically studied to discover the root cause of an accident. The unloading operation procedures of cement tank trucks, the effectiveness of safety valves, the chemical composition, mechanical properties and material quality of aluminum alloy manhole covers, and the macroscopic and microscopic morphology of fractures were comprehensively analyzed. The results show that although the Mg content in the chemical composition of an aluminum alloy manhole cover exceeds the standard, it is not the root cause of the accident.

For manipulating heat flow according to human desire, thermal metamaterial structures (meta-structures) have attracted growing interest. Based on the transformation thermotics and the effective medium approximation theory, we designed and fabricated a convertible thermal meta-structural device to demonstrate that multiple different heat-flow manipulations could be conducted using a single thermal meta-structural device. The convertible meta-structures were designed by discretizing a two-dimensional plane and separating multiple square unit modules with stripe-shaped dissimilar materials of the Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and solid resin with surface metallized copper (Cu).

To ensure safety and prevent failure of engineering equipment throughout its lifespan, the concept of 'Safety Design' is proposed, which covers all the cradle-to-grave phases of engineering equipment, considers at least ten essential factors of failure causes, and conducts root cause analysis at three different scales, in order to proactively control the safety risks before the occurrence of failure rather than passively conduct the remedial measures after failure. Herein, in order to demonstrate how to implement this effective and efficient concept in engineering practice, a case study of failure analysis and prevention is addressed on the extraction column in the production line for methyl methacrylate. Based on the analysis results, the causes were finally determined to be all derived from the stages before operation, including inappropriate design, limited quality inspection of fabrication and installation.
