Colorectal cancer (CRC) as a heterogeneous disease, is one of the most common and serious cancers with high metastases and mortality. Lung is one of the most common sites of CRC metastases with high heterogeneity between cells, pathways, or molecules. The present review will focus on potential roles of gene heterogeneity in KRAS pathway in the development of CRC metastasis to lung and clinical therapies, which would lead to better understanding of the metastatic control and benefit to the treatment of metastases.

Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase catalytic subunit alpha (PIK3CA) plays a crucial role in the initiation and progress of cancerous tumors through the overexpression of the PI3K pathway promoting uncontrollable levels of cell proliferation. In addition only Class I PI3K has been discovered to be involved in human cancer due to its unique ability to produce phosphoinositide 3,4,5 trisphosphate (PIP3), which has been discovered to play a crucial role in human oncogenesis. The role of PIK3CA is lucubrated in breast cancer and gastric cancer, but is not well characterized in lung diseases.

Lung cancer, as a highly heterogeneous disease, can be initiated and progressed through the interaction between permanent genetic mutations and dynamic epigenetic alterations. However, the mediating mechanisms of epigenetics in cancer heterogeneity remain unclear. The evolution of cancer, the existence of cancer stem cells (CSCs) and the phenomenon of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) have been reported to be involved in lung cancer heterogeneity.

Mucins (MUC) are a family consisting of large O-glycoproteins whose primary functions are to protect and lubricate cell epithelial surfaces and contribute to intra- and inter-cellular signal pathways, cell proliferation, growth and apotosis. With the development of new technologies, MUCs begin to be identified as an effective marker in evaluating the tumor heterogeneity in lung cancer. MUCs' diverse expressions in subtypes of lung cancer indicate the inter-tumor heterogeneity.

Telocytes (TCs) represent a new distinct type of interstitial cells found in many organs, including lungs. TCs are mainly defined by a small cellular body from which arise very long (hundreds of micrometers) extensions named telopodes. During the last years, TCs were characterized in respect with their microRNA profiles, gene features and proteome signatures.

Lung cancer is one of the most common malignancies worldwide. The present study aimed to investigate specific genotypes of different subtypes or stages of lung cancer through gene expression variations of chromosome 2 genes, trying to identify predictors for diagnosis or prognosis of lung cancer. About 537 patients with lung adenocarcinoma (ADC), 140 patients with lung squamous carcinoma (SQC), 9 patients with lung large cell carcinoma (LCC), 56 patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC), and 590 patients without cancer were analyzed in present study.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a heterogeneous syndrome that occurs as a result of various risk factors, including either direct or indirect lung injury, and systemic inflammation triggered also by severe pneumonia (SP). SP-ARDS-associated morbidity and mortality remains high also due to the lack of disease-specific biomarkers. The present study aimed at identifying disease-specific biomarkers in SP or SP-ARDS by integrating proteomic profiles of inflammatory mediators with clinical informatics.

Precision medicine has been initiated and gains more and more attention from preclinical and clinical scientists. A number of key elements or critical parts in precision medicine have been described and emphasized to establish a systems understanding of precision medicine. The principle of precision medicine is to treat patients on the basis of genetic alterations after gene mutations are identified, although questions and challenges still remain before clinical application.

Tumour inflammatory microenvironment is considered to play a role in the sensitivity of tumour cells to therapies and prognosis of patients with lung cancer. The expression of CCL20, one of the critical chemoattractants responsible for inflammation cells recruitment, has been shown overexpressed in variety of tumours. This study aimed at investigating potential mechanisms of CCL20 function and production in human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Telocytes (TCs) are a unique type of interstitial cells with specific, extremely long prolongations named telopodes (Tps), as shown by immune-positive staining against CD34, c-kit and vimentin. They were found in many organs of mammals, with potential biological functions, including the trachea and lung, even though the exact function remains unclear. Here, we give a historical overview of the TCs research field and summarize the latest findings associated with TCs, with a special focus on the recent progress about TCs specific gene and protein profiles that has been made in understanding that TCs may play a potential, but important, role in the pathogenesis of lung diseases.

Background: Telocytes (TCs) are suggested as a new type of interstitial cells with specific telopodes. Our previous study evidenced that TCs differed from fibroblasts and stem cells at the aspect of gene expression profiles. The present study aims to search the characters and patterns of chromosome X genes of TC-specific or TC-dominated gene profiles and fingerprints, investigate the network of principle genes, and explore potential functional association.

Precision medicine allows a dramatic expansion of biological data, while there is still an urgent need to understand and insight the exact meaning of those data to human health and disease. This has led to an increasing wealth of data unanalyzed. The concept of precision medicine is about the customization of healthcare, with decisions and practices tailored to an individual patient based on their intrinsic biology in addition to clinical "signs and symptoms".

Carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 1 (CEACAM1) is a broadly-expressed immunoglobulin-like cell adhesion molecule with a wide range of biological functions to regulate cell signaling. The present article mainly focuses on the role of CEACAM1 as a therapeutic target in lung diseases and discusses the potential of therapeutic strategies targeting CEACAM1. The article overviews the structure and its sub-types, biological function, and potential roles of CEACAM1 in lung diseases.

In the conventional analysis of complex diseases, the control and case samples are assumed to be of great purity. However, due to the heterogeneity of disease samples, many disease genes are even not always consistently up-/down-regulated, leading to be under-estimated. This problem will seriously influence effective personalized diagnosis or treatment.

Inflammatory cells and mediators are essential components in tumor microenvironment and play decisive roles in the initiation, proliferation, survival, promotion, invasion, or metastasis of lung cancer. Clinical and epidemiologic studies suggested a strong association between inflammation and lung cancer and an influence of immune surveillances and tumor responses to chemotherapeutic drugs, although roles of inflammation in lung cancer remain unclear. The present review outlined roles of inflammation in lung cancer, with particular focus on inflammatory components, types, biomarkers, or principal mechanisms by which the inflammation contributes to the development of lung cancer.

Lung cancer and metastasis are two of the most lethal diseases globally and seldom have effective therapies. Immunotherapy is considered as one of the powerful alternatives. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) can suppress the activation of the immune system, maintain immune tolerance to self-antigens, and contribute to immunosuppression of antitumor immunity, which is critical for tumor immune evasion in epithelial malignancies, including lung cancer.
