Article Synopsis
  • In 2008, guidelines were established for researching autophagy, which has since gained significant interest and new technologies, necessitating regular updates to monitoring methods across various organisms.
  • The new guidelines emphasize selecting appropriate techniques to evaluate autophagy while noting that no single method suits all situations; thus, a combination of methods is encouraged.
  • The document highlights that key proteins involved in autophagy also impact other cellular processes, suggesting genetic studies should focus on multiple autophagy-related genes to fully understand these pathways.

Delta-opioid receptor (DOR) is widely distributed in the central nervous system, and its activation protects against ischaemic/hypoxic brain injury. However, the role of DOR in microglia in ischaemic stroke has not yet been fully investigated. We found that DOR was expressed in both human and mouse cerebral microglia, besides, it was upregulated in activated BV2 microglial cells by immunofluorescence staining and Western blot.

The brainstem, the core of the central nervous system, plays a vital role in controlling arterial blood pressure and its elevation of hypertension subtypes, especially essential hypertension. Integrative metabolic and proteomic profiling was performed on the brainstem samples of 11 week old spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) and age-matched normotensive Wistar rats, using hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography quadrupole/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HILIC-Q/TOFMS) (PeptideAtlas: PASS01621) and nano-liquid chromatography-high-resolution-MS (nano-LC-high-resolution) combined with quantitative tandem mass tags (ProteomeXchange: PXD021210). The results showed a potentially significant measure of metabolic disorders in the brainstem of SHRs, including purine and pyrimidine metabolism and carnitine and acylcarnitine deficiency.

Background: Low back pain is a common reason for medical care and carries a heavy social burden. The efficacy of Tuina or health care education for low back pain has been evaluated in previous systematic reviews. However, there is no evidence to support the superiority of one form of treatment over another.

Beijing Engineering Research Center of Radiographic Techniques and Equipment, Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China; School of Nuclear Science and Technology, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China; CAS center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology, Shanghai, China. Electronic address:

Background: Subthreshold depression (StD) is a prevalent condition that may increase the risk of incident major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the relationship between StD and MDD remains unclear.

Methods: A total of 153 adult subjects, including 53 drug-naive MDD, 50 StD and 50 healthy control (HC) subjects, underwent a T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging scan, and the gray matter volume (GMV) alterations among the three groups were quantitatively analyzed using voxel-based morphometry (VBM).

Background: Many studies have shown the potential therapeutic effect of acupuncture on allergic rhinitis. Most of these studies were limited by low-quality evidence. Preliminary experiments showed that the use of acupuncture at three nasal acupoints plus acupoint application (AAP) achieves a more persistent effect in the treatment of perennial allergic rhinitis than acupuncture alone.

Scutellaria barbata has a long history of medical use in Traditional Chinese Medicine for removing heat and toxic material, promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, and inducing diuresis to reduce edema. Recent pharmacology investigations have provided evidence for its anti-cancer, bacteriostasis, anti-virus, anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation and immunity enhancement properties. The efficacy of activating blood circulation and removing blood stasis has unique advantages in the treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

Objective: To observe the effect of moxibustion pretreatment at different time on serum hormone levels in diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) rats, so as to explore its protective mechanisms.

Methods: Forty female SD rats were randomly divided into control, model, moxibustion-1 (moxibustion was given 4 weeks before modeling), moxibustion-2 (moxibustion was given 2 weeks before modeling and 2 weeks from the 1st day on after modeling ) and moxibustion-3 (moxibustion was given 4 weeks from the 1st day on after modeling) groups (=8 rats in each group). The DOR model was established by gavage of Tripterygium Glycosides (75 mg/kg) once daily for 14 days.

Crohn's disease may cause excessive damage and repair in the intestinal epithelium due to its chronic relapsing intestinal inflammation. These factors may initiate the TGF- 1-Smad pathway to activate the transcription factor of Snail, and the Snail-mediated pathway promotes the transformation of intestinal epithelial cells to mesenchymal cells, leading to intestinal fibrosis. Acupuncture and moxibustion have been demonstrated to prevent intestinal fibrosis in Crohn's disease.

Gluconate suppresses seizure activity in developing brains by inhibiting CLC-3 chloride channels.

Mol Brain

May 2019

Department of Biology, Huck Institutes of Life Sciences, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, 16802, USA.

Neonatal seizures are different from adult seizures, and many antiepileptic drugs that are effective in adults often fail to treat neonates. Here, we report that gluconate inhibits neonatal seizure by inhibiting CLC-3 chloride channels. We detect a voltage-dependent outward rectifying Cl current mediated by CLC-3 Cl channels in early developing brains but not adult mouse brains.
