School of Rehabilitation Science, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai, China; Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China; National Center for Neurological Disorders, Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China; National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases, Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how electroacupuncture (EA) affects irisin secretion and its role in recovering brain function and blood vessel health after a stroke in rats.
  • The research showed that EA increased irisin levels significantly after seven days and improved neurobehavioral function while reducing brain damage and enhancing blood flow and vascular growth.
  • These beneficial effects of EA were weakened when the gene responsible for irisin production was silenced, suggesting that irisin plays a critical role in EA’s therapeutic effects on brain recovery.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of acupuncture on weight management in overweight adults with type 2 diabetes, as existing therapies haven’t been very effective.
  • Conducted as a randomized, sham-controlled clinical trial with 102 participants, it compared the outcomes of diet and exercise combined with sham acupuncture versus actual acupuncture over one month.
  • Results showed both groups lost weight, but the acupuncture group had a notable reduction in central fat and liver fat, along with increased brain activity in specific areas, highlighting acupuncture's potential benefits in managing diabetes-related weight issues.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study found reduced gray matter density in the prefrontal cortex and periaqueductal gray of CAI participants, which correlated negatively with their fear of movement and pain intensity.
  • * Results imply that atrophy in these brain areas may be linked to pain-related movement fear and persistent pain in individuals with CAI, warranting further exploration of these neural mechanisms.

Background: Moxibustion, a traditional Chinese medicine practice, employs Moxa Wool, derived from Artemisia argyi. Flavonoids, the key pharmacological constituents in Moxa Wool, are known for their anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. The purity of Moxa Wool, particularly its flavonoid content, directly influences the efficacy of moxibustion treatments.

The persistence of neuronal degeneration and damage is a major obstacle in ageing medicine. Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptors detect environmental stressors and trigger the maturation and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines that can cause neuronal damage and accelerate cell death. NLR (NOD-like receptors) inflammasomes are protein complexes that contain NOD-like receptors.

Glutathione (GSH)‑degrading enzymes are essential for starting the first stages of GSH degradation. These enzymes include extracellular γ‑glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) and intracellular GSH‑specific γ‑glutamylcyclotransferase 1 (ChaC1) and 2. These enzymes are essential for cellular activities, such as immune response, differentiation, proliferation, homeostasis regulation and programmed cell death.

  • A study investigated the safety and effectiveness of infrared laser moxibustion (ILM) in reducing cancer-related fatigue (CRF) among breast cancer survivors through a randomized clinical trial involving 140 participants.
  • The results indicated that ILM significantly reduced fatigue levels compared to a waitlist control group, with a noteworthy decrease in fatigue scores observed from baseline to week 6 and sustained at week 18.
  • Although ILM showed a trend toward reducing fatigue compared to a sham treatment, the findings emphasize the need for more extensive trials to confirm its efficacy.

Moxibustion ameliorates chronic inflammatory visceral pain via spinal circRNA-miRNA-mRNA networks: a central mechanism study.

Mol Brain

May 2024

Laboratory of Acupuncture-Moxibustion and Immunology, Shanghai Research Institute of Acupuncture and Meridian, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai, 200030, China.

This study aimed to unveil the central mechanism of moxibustion treating chronic inflammatory visceral pain (CIVP) from the angle of circRNA-miRNA-mRNA networks in the spinal cord. The rat CIVP model was established using a mixture of 5% (w/v) 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid and 50% ethanol at a volume ratio of 2:1 via enema. Rats in the moxibustion group received herb-partitioned moxibustion at Tianshu (ST25, bilateral) and Qihai (CV6) points.

Clinical practice guideline for acupuncture and moxibustion: Allergic rhinitis.

J Integr Med

May 2024

Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Dongzhimen Hospital, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Beijing 100700, China. Electronic address:

Acupuncture is one of the most effective complementary therapies for allergic rhinitis (AR) and has been recommended by several clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for AR. However, these CPGs mentioned acupuncture without making recommendations for clinical implementation and therapeutic protocols, therefore limiting the applicability of acupuncture therapies for AR. Hence, for the benefit of acupuncture practitioners around the world, the World Federation of Acupuncture-moxibustion Societies have initiated a project to develop the CPG for the use of acupuncture and moxibustion to treat AR.

Long noncoding RNA (lncRNAs) are involved in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC). Moxibustion, a traditional Chinese medicine, can improve symptoms in patients with UC and reduce intestinal inflammation in rats with UC. However, it remains unclear whether the ameliorative effect of moxibustion on intestinal mucosal inflammation in UC is related to lncRNAs.

Wearable epidermal electronics with non- or minimally-invasive characteristics can collect, transduce, communicate, and interact with accessible physicochemical health indicators on the skin. However, due to the stratum corneum layer, rich information about body health is buried under the skin stratum corneum layer, for example, in the skin interstitial fluid. Microneedle patches are typically designed with arrays of special microsized needles of length within 1000 µm.

The endovascular intervention technique has gained prominence in the treatment of intracranial aneurysms due to its minimal invasiveness and shorter recovery time. A critical step of the intervention is the shaping of the microcatheter, which ensures its accurate placement and stability within the aneurysm sac. This is vital for enhancing coil placement and minimizing the risk of catheter kickback during the coiling process.
