Metabolomic profiling is a promising approach to identify new biomarkers for cancer prognosis. However, the role of circulating metabolites as prognostic indicators in esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) has not been well explored. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of three serum metabolites, d-mannose, l-proline (LP), and 3-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), which were significantly different between EAC patients and controls, identified through a global and targeted metabolite profiling.

To quantify the association between dietary and circulating carotenoids and fracture risk, a meta-analysis was conducted by searching MEDLINE and EMBASE databases for eligible articles published before May 2016. Five prospective and 2 case-control studies with 140,265 participants and 4,324 cases were identified in our meta-analysis. Among which 5 studies assessed the association between dietary carotenoids levels and hip fracture risk, 2 studies focused on the association between circulating carotenoids levels and any fracture risk.

Background: Pain relief comparable with radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFT) alone and fewer side effects than RFT have been achieved by combination treatment with pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) and short-duration RFT in trigeminal neuralgia (TN).

Case Description: We report the successful management of recurrent TN after RFT with single PRF in 2 patients. The RFT treatment was performed in 2-3 cycles for each division, with the lesion setting at 75°C-80°C for 90 seconds.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of a 30 mg extended release (ER) formulation of propiverine hydrochloride versus a 4 mg ER formulation of tolterodine tartrate for treating overactive bladder (OAB).
  • Patients aged 18-75 with OAB were randomly assigned to receive either medication for 8 weeks, and their progress was tracked through diaries and self-reports, alongside monitoring for any side effects.
  • Results showed propiverine significantly reduced voiding frequency and urgency incontinence better than tolterodine, with similar safety profiles but fewer discontinuations due to side effects in the propiverine group.

Sleep alleviates Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related neuropathological processes, whereas sleep disturbance in AD patients is associated with elevated peripheral inflammatory cytokine levels. In the present study, we assessed interleukin (IL)-1β and APOEε4 polymorphisms for association with susceptibility of sleep disturbances in AD patients. A total of 123 pretreated AD patients and 120 age-, gender- and education level-matched healthy controls were recruited for two consecutive full-night polysomnography and measurement of Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) scores for sleep-wake disturbance.

Introduction: Vascular cognitive impairment without dementia is very common among the aged and tends to progress to dementia, but there have been no proper large-scale intervention trials dedicated to it. Vascular cognitive impairment without dementia caused by subcortical ischemic small vessel disease (hereinafter, subcortical Vascular cognitive impairment without dementia) represents a relatively homogeneous disease process and is a suitable target for therapeutic trials investigating Vascular cognitive impairment without dementia. Preclinical trials showed that dl-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP) is effective for cognitive impairment of vascular origin.

The purpose of this study is to identify protein kinase genes that modulate oxaliplatin cytotoxicity in vitro and evaluate the roles of these genes in predicting clinical outcomes in CRC patients receiving oxaliplatin-based adjuvant chemotherapy. A high-throughput RNAi screening targeting 626 human kinase genes was performed to identify kinase genes whose inhibition potentiates oxaliplatin sensitivity in CRC cells. The associations between copy numbers of the candidate genes and recurrence-free survival and overall survival were analyzed in 142 stage III CRC patients receiving first-line oxaliplatin-based adjuvant chemotherapy who were enrolled from two independent hospitals.

Background: To evaluate the effectiveness of endolaser photocoagulation by a two-port pars plana nonvitrectomy approach for treating Coats' disease with shallow exudative retinal detachment.

Methods: This study included 24 patients (23 boys with an age range of 2-17 years, and one girl, age 6 years) with stage 3 Coats' disease (25 eyes) from December 2012 and May 2014 at a single center. All of the 25 eyes were complicated with serous or total retinal detachment and received none-vitrectomized endolaser: two (23- or 25-gauge) incisions were routinely made 3 mm posterior to the corneal limbus and a laser was applied directly on the abnormal blood vessels.

May 2015

Key-Discipline Laboratory of Clinical Medicine Henan, Zhengzhou, China. Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou, China.

NISCH encodes the imidazoline receptor Nischarin and is a known tumor suppressor in many human malignancies; however, its roles in ovarian cancer are still largely unknown. Here, we aim to investigate the biologic functions of NISCH in ovarian cancer. We found that NISCH was significantly downregulated, which correlated considerably with advanced tumor stage, poor differentiation, lymph node metastasis, and the serous/mucinous subtypes in a panel of ovarian cancer tissues.

Congenital dysfibrinogenaemia is a rare disease characterised by inherited abnormality in the fibrinogen molecule, leading to functional defects. In this study, we investigated the molecular basis of dysfibrinogenaemia in a Chinese pedigree. Functional fibrinogen of venous blood samples was measured by Clauss method, and the antigens of fibrinogen in plasma were measured by immunoturbidimetry assay.
