Purpose: To explore the application effect of mind mapping-assisted flipped classroom in clinical endodontics teaching.

Methods: A total of 41 fifth-year undergraduates majoring in stomatology from School of Stomatology, Tongji University, finishing their clinical internship at Departments of Endodontics from October 2023 to March 2024, were randomly divided into control group (traditional teaching group, n=21) and experimental group (flipped classroom teaching group, n=20). Theoretical assessments were conducted on the day of entering the department and at the end of eight weeks in the department.

Purpose: To realize the automatic segmentation of mandibular molar and pulp cavity on cone-beam CT (CBCT) images by U-net convolutional neural network, and to use the 3D models reconstructed by Micro-CT data as the ground truth to validate its accuracy. METHODS: Twenty groups of small field of view(FOV) CBCT data containing complete mandibular molars were collected from the Department of Radiology, Affiliated Stomatology Hospital of Tongji University. After preprocessing, an endodontic specialist labeled teeth and pulp cavities by MITK Workbench software.

Purpose: To investigate how bisphosphonates affect early process of socket healing in mice model.

Methods: Eighteen 8-9 weeks C57BL/6 male mice were randomly divided into control and experimental group. Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw(BRONJ)model was conducted by intraperitoneal injection of zoledronate(ZOL) and extraction of lower left first molar in mice.

Purpose: To explore the effect of healthy human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (hPDLFs) -derived exosomes on tooth resorption after delayed tooth replantation in rats and its possible mechanism.

Methods: The exosomes derived from hPDLFs were isolated and identified in thirty six-week-old SD rats and randomly divided into control group and exosome group. The right maxillary first molar was extracted to establish a delayed tooth replantation model.

[Effect of DKK1 on the biological behaviors of dental pulp cells exposed to lipopolysaccharide].

Department of Pediatric Dentistry, School and Hospital of Stomatology, Tongji University, Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Tooth Restoration and Regeneration. Shanghai 200072, China. E-mail: 1632345@ tongji.edu.cn.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how DKK1 affects the behavior of human dental pulp cells when exposed to lipopolysaccharide (LPS), focusing on cell migration, proliferation, and differentiation.
  • DKK1 was found to enhance the migration and differentiation of these cells, while it did not significantly impact their proliferation in the presence of LPS.
  • The findings suggest that the effects of DKK1 may be linked to its inhibition of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway.

[Expression of hypoxia inducible factor-1alpha during mouse mandibular first molar eruption and its significance].

Shanghai Kou Qiang Yi Xue

February 2021

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, School & Hospital of Stomatology, Tongji University, Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Tooth Restoration and Regeneration. Shanghai 200072, China.

Purpose: To investigate the expression of hypoxia inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1α) during the eruption of mouse lower first molar, and to explore the correlation between its expression and the activity of osteoclasts.

Methods: Mouse mandibles were dissected from mice at day 1.5 to 14.

Background: Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-based bone tissue engineering is a promising treatment option for maxillary sinus augmentation. Rapid vascularization is necessary to enhance the osteoinductive efficacy and prevent necrosis of the tissue-engineered bone. This study investigated whether the co-autotransplantation of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) could significantly enhance the osteogenic efficacy of MSCs and prevent necrosis of the tissue-engineered bone in a maxillary sinus augmentation model in dogs.

Zinc-incorporated biomaterials show promoting effects on osteogenesis; however, excessive zinc ions lead to cytotoxic reactions and also have other adverse effects. Therefore, the double-edged effects of Zn microenvironments on osteogenesis may become critical issues for new material development. This study systematically investigated the bidirectional influences of diverse Zn microenvironments on the cell adhesion, proliferation, osteogenic differentiation and apoptosis of rBMSCs.

The study aimed to investigate if a construct of porous improved biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) combined with osteogenically induced periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) could repair periodontal defect. Human PDLSCs were cultured, identified, and osteogenically induced, and then seeded on the improved BCP, assessed by scanning electron microscopy and MTT method. Afterwards, PDLSC-seeded scaffolds were used in six Beagle dogs' alveolar bone dehiscence model, and new bone formation was assessed by three-dimensional micro-computed tomographic imaging, fluorescence, and light microscopy at 4, 8 and 12 week postoperatively.

A new pH fluorescent probe 2,8-bis(acridin-9-ylethynyl)-6,12-5,11-methanodibenzo[,][1,5]diazocine (TBN), which has two acridine moieties attached to Tröger's base, is a useful fluorescent probe for monitoring extreme acidic and alkaline pH. TBN displays an excellent pH dependent behavior and responds linearly to extreme conditions in the pH ranges of 1.4-3.

Purpose: To evaluate the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of panoramic radiography in detection of maxillary teeth roots projecting into the maxillary sinus.

Methods: Paired panoramic radiographs and cone-beam CT (CBCT) images of maxilla from 110 subjects were analyzed. 42 males and 68 females (15~36 years old) with the second molars erupted completely were included.
