Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), characterized by choroidal neovascularization (CNV), is one of the leading causes of severe visual impairment and irreversible vision loss around the world. Subretinal fibrosis (SRF) contributes to the incomplete response to anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment and is one of the main reasons for long-term poor visual outcomes in nAMD. Reducing SRF is urgently needed in the anti-VEGF era.

Medicinal plants, also known as herbs, have been discovered and utilized in traditional medical practice since prehistoric times. Medicinal plants have been proven rich in thousands of natural products that hold great potential for the development of new drugs. Previously, we reviewed the types of Chinese traditional medicines that a Tang Dynasty monk Jianzhen (Japanese: Ganjin) brought to Japan from China in 742.

Purpose: Establishing the safety profile of repeated low-level red-light (RLRL) therapy is necessary prior to its widespread clinical implementation.
Methods: We conducted a systematic review (International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews, CRD42024516676) of articles across seven databases from inception through February 10, 2024, with keywords related to myopia and RLRL therapy. Pooled safety outcomes and risk-to-benefit ratios were reported, and incidence of side effects was compared with other antimyopia interventions.

Background: Retinal sublayer thickness is associated with both ophthalmic and neurodegenerative diseases, serving as a valuable biomarker. Despite the established role of diet in chronic disease prevention, the relationship between healthy dietary patterns and retinal sublayer thickness remains underexplored.
Objective: This study aims to investigate the associations between four commonly used diet assessment scores and retinal sublayer thickness in a large-scale population.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most common complications of diabetes and induces severe visual impairment worldwide. Endothelial cell dysfunction plays an important role in the pathogenesis of DR. Here, we keep a watchful eye on /-hydrolase domain-containing 1 (ABHD1), a potential regulator in lipid metabolism and neovascularization.

Background: Breast cancer (BC) is caused by the uncontrolled proliferation of breast epithelial cells followed by malignant transformation, and it has the highest incidence among female malignant tumors. The metastasis of BC occurs through direct and lymphatic spread. Although ocular metastasis is relatively rare, it is a good indicator of a worse prognosis.

Pathological myopia (PM) is associated with ocular morbidities that cause blindness. PM often occurs in eyes with high myopia (HM) while they are distinctly different. Identifying the differences in metabolites and metabolic pathways between patients with PM and HM may provide information about the pathogenesis of PM, which is currently unknown.

The objective of this study is to utilize optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) techniques for the purpose of identifying abnormalities in retinal and conjunctival vascular density among patients afflicted with renal hypertension. From October 2022 to October 2023, a cohort of sixteen patients diagnosed with renal hypertension (RH), comprising a total of 32 eyes, was selected from the Department of Nephrology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University. Concurrently, a group of sixteen healthy individuals, carefully matched in characteristics, was recruited from volunteers at the Ophthalmology Research Center and designated as the healthy controls (HCs) group.

As the prevalence of diabetes mellitus increases each year, its most common microvascular complication, diabetic retinopathy (DR), is also on the rise. DR is now regarded as an inflammatory disease in which innate immunity plays a crucial role, and a large number of innate immune cells with associated cytokines are involved in the pathologic process of DR. The role of adaptive immunity in DR is seldom mentioned, probably due to the general perception of the immune privileged environment of the retina; however, in recent years there has been a gradual increase in research on the role of adaptive immunity in DR, and with the discovery of the retinal lymphatic system, it seems that the role of adaptive immunity can no longer be ignored.

The lack of sensitive and accurate monitoring methods for in vivo estrogen levels presents challenges for better prevention of estrogen-induced diseases. We have developed a label-free electrochemical aptasensor that demonstrates high sensitivity and selectivity for the broad-spectrum detection of estrogen molecules. This biosensor uses gold nanoparticles for electrochemical signal amplification and aptamers for broad-spectrum target recognition, enabling precise detection of trace amounts of estrogen in serum samples.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) stands as a leading cause of severe visual impairment and blindness among the elderly globally. As a multifactorial disease, AMD's pathogenesis is influenced by genetic, environmental, and age-related factors, with lipid metabolism abnormalities and complement system dysregulation playing critical roles. This review delves into recent advancements in understanding the intricate interaction between these two crucial pathways, highlighting their contribution to the disease's progression through chronic inflammation, drusen formation, and retinal pigment epithelium dysfunction.

Metformin is one of the most commonly used oral hypoglycemic drugs in clinical practice, with unique roles in neurodegeneration and vascular lesions. Neurodegeneration and vasculopathy coexist in many diseases and typically affect the neurovascular unit (NVU), a minimal structural and functional unit in the central nervous system. Its components interact with one another and are indispensable for maintaining tissue homeostasis.

Breakthroughs have been achieved recently in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) for the eye disease screening in Chinese primary healthcare institutions, but challenges have also emerged. First, AI software has continuously evolved, expanding the range of eye diseases that can be screened, enhancing diagnostic accuracy, and progressing towards predicting the course of eye diseases. However, inadequate infrastructure such as 5G and a shortage of specialized personnel have hindered the coverage of screenings.
