Premenopausal women, who account for more than half of patients for bariatric surgery, are at higher risk of developing postoperative iron deficiency anemia (IDA) than postmenopausal women and men. We aimed at establishing a machine learning model to evaluate the risk of newly onset IDA in premenopausal women 12 months after sleeve gastrectomy (SG). Premenopausal women with complete clinical records and undergoing SG were enrolled in this retrospective study.

Objective: The goal of this study was to compare measures of weight regain (WR) and their association with the glucose metabolism deterioration within 3 years following bariatric surgery among Chinese patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
Methods: Among a retrospective cohort of 249 patients with obesity and T2DM who underwent bariatric surgery and were followed up to 3 years, WR was assessed by weight changes, BMI changes, percentage of presurgery weight, percentage of nadir weight, and percentage of maximum weight lost (%MWL). Glucose metabolism deterioration was defined as a change from an absence of antidiabetic medication use to use, or absence of insulin use to use, or an increase in glycated hemoglobin by at least 0.

Background: Oncogenic mutations in the KRAS gene are very common in human cancers, resulting in cells with well-characterized selective advantages. For more than three decades, the development of effective therapeutics to inhibit KRAS-driven tumorigenesis has proved a formidable challenge and KRAS was considered 'undruggable'. Therefore, multi-targeted therapy may provide a reasonable strategy for the effective treatment of KRAS-driven cancers.

Purpose: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is widely used as an effective treatment for type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients with obesity; long-term (> 5 years) diabetes remission (DR) rates have been less frequently reported. To date, there is no validated model to guide procedure selection based on long-term glucose control in patients with T2D. The purpose of this study is to establish a new tool for predicting long-term DR with a nomogram.

Aims: To investigate determinants of circulating levels of adipocyte-fatty acid binding protein (A-FABP) and lipocalin-2 (LCN2), their relationships with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and microvascular events, and effects of fenofibrate in type 2 diabetes (T2D).
Methods: A-FABP and LCN2 were quantified in baseline plasma from 2000 T2D adults in a Fenofibrate Intervention and Event Lowering in Diabetes (FIELD) trial sub-study and correlates thereof determined. In a subset (n = 200) adipokines were also measured on-trial.
Background FGF21 (fibroblast growth factor 21), a novel hepatokine regulating lipid metabolism, has been linked to atherosclerotic disease. However, whether this relationship exists in patients without nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is unclear. We assessed the association between serum FGF21 levels and atherosclerosis in patients without nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and investigated whether baseline FGF21 could predict incident atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in a 7-year prospective cohort.

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is notably accurate for even minimal degree of hepatic steatosis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). But routine use of MRS is limited by its cost and availability. In this study, we developed a diagnostic model combining ultrasonography with biomarkers to identify mild NAFLD, with MRS as the reference standard.

Bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7), a member of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) family, plays pivotal roles in energy expenditure. However, whether and how BMP7 regulates hepatic insulin sensitivity is still poorly understood. Here, we show that hepatic BMP7 expression is reduced in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced diabetic mice and palmitate (PA)-induced insulin-resistant HepG2 and AML12 cells.
