Background: Glaucoma is a leading cause of vision impairment and permanent blindness. Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is a prominent type of primary glaucoma; however, its cause is difficult to determine. This study aimed to analyze the serum lipid profile of Chinese POAG patients and assess its correlation with intraocular pressure (IOP).

Purpose: Autophagy dysregulation triggers extracellular matrix remodeling via changes in cellular collagen levels and protease secretion. However, the effect of autophagy on scleral extracellular matrix remodeling in the context of myopia is not fully understood. In this study, we measured the level of autophagy in sclera of form deprivation myopic guinea pigs; we also sought a correlation between the level of autophagy in human scleral fibroblasts and the extent of COL1A1 synthesis.

Bacterial biofilm formation protects bacteria from antibiotics and the immune system, excessive inflammation further complicates treatment. Here, iron-based metal-organic framework (MIL-101)-loaded riboflavin nanoparticles are designed for the therapeutic challenge of biofilm infection and hyperinflammation in bacterial keratitis. Specifically, MIL-101 produces a thermal effect under exogenous near-infrared light irradiation, which synergizes with ferroptosis-like bacterial death induced by iron ions to exert an effective biofilm infection eradication effect.

Purpose: To determine whether pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) could get better functional and anatomical outcomes.
Methods: A comprehensive literature search was performed to find relevant studies. A meta-analysis was conducted by comparing the weighted mean differences (WMD) in the mean change of best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) from baseline and calculating the odd ratios (OR) for rates of epiretinal membrane (ERM) formation and recurrence of retinal detachment (RD).

Purpose: To observe the outcome of bilateral femtosecond laser-assisted clear lens extraction with trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation for presbyopia correction and evaluate its feasibility in early presbyopic adults.
Methods: Prospective case series of eyes with clear crystalline lenses that underwent femtosecond laser-assisted lens extraction and trifocal IOL (Acrysof IQ PanOptix, Model TFNT00, Alcon) implantation between 2021 and 2023 were followed up for at least 3 months after surgery. Outcome measures included monocular uncorrected visual acuity at near (UNVA, 40 cm), intermediate (UIVA, 60 cm), and distance (UDVA, 5 m), monocular manifest refraction, corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), defocus curve assessment, and spectacle independence at both near and distance.

Purpose: To assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on a worldwide private ophthalmic practice.
Design: In this retrospective study, we reviewed the 2020 monthly outpatient and surgical volume of refractive, cataract, and retinal disease in Aier Eye clinics/hospitals of different regions, including the United States, Germany, Spain, Italy, and six major cities in China (Wuhan, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang, Urumqi and Yili). All of these data were compared to those of the same period of 2019.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the most common reason for blindness in working-age individuals globally. Prolonged high blood glucose is a main causative factor for DR development, and glucose transport is prerequisite for the disturbances in DR caused by hyperglycemia. Glucose transport is mediated by its transporters, including the facilitated transporters (glucose transporter, GLUTs), the "active" glucose transporters (sodium-dependent glucose transporters, SGLTs), and the SLC50 family of uniporters (sugars will eventually be exported transporters, SWEETs).

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF), photodynamic therapy (PDT), and laser treatment (LT) for anatomical and functional improvement in myopic choroidal neovascularization (mCNV) patients.
Methods: Two researchers independently searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and other databases to screen studies comparing best-corrected vision acuity (BCVA) and foveal center thickness (FCT) changes after mCNV treatment. Post-treatment chorioretinal atrophy (CRA) is a secondary outcome indicator.

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effect and its mechanism of fenofibrate on retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) injury induced by excessive fat in vitro and in vivo.
Methods: ARPE-19 cells were co-incubated with palmitic acid (PA) and fenofibric acid (the active form of fenofibrate after metabolism in vivo) and mice fed with high-fat diet (HFD) were supplemented with fenofibrate. The following methods were used: Western blot and immunofluorescent staining to determine expressions of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-associated factors and proinflammatory cytokines; electroretinogram (ERG) c-wave to evaluate RPE function; TUNEL staining to detect the apoptotic cell in RPE tissue.

This study investigated the content of inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress levels in the aqueous humor (AH) of patients with high myopia (HM) and explored the relationship between these factors and the axial length (AL) of the eye, to explore the roles of mild intraocular inflammation and oxidative stress imbalance in the occurrence and development of myopia. AH samples from 40 patients (70 eyes) were collected during implantable collamer lens (ICL-V4c) surgery. The subjects were divided into three groups according to AL: group A (AL ≤ 26 mm), group B (26 < AL ≤ 28 mm), and group C (AL ≥ 28 mm).

Purpose: SYVN1, a gene involved in endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation, has been found to exert a protective effect by inhibiting inflammation in retinopathy. This study aimed to clarify whether SYVN1 is involved in the pathogenesis of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and its potential as a candidate for target therapy.
Methods: Human retinal microvascular endothelial cells (hRMECs) and a mouse model of oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) were used to reveal the retinopathy development-associated protein expression and molecular mechanism.
Introduction: Damage to retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells caused by oxidative stress is closely related to the pathogenesis of several blinding retinal diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinitis pigmentosa, and other inherited retinal degenerative conditions. However, the mechanisms of this process are poorly understood. Hence, the goal of this study was to investigate hydrogen peroxide (HO)-induced oxidative damage and protective role of peroxiredoxin 6 (PRDX6) protein via EGFR/ERK signaling pathway in RPE cells.
