Introduction: The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of decitabine in Chinese patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).
Methods: Patients (≥18 years) who had a de novo or secondary MDS diagnosis according to French-American-British classification and an International Prognostic Scoring System score ≥0.5 were enrolled and randomized (1:1) to one of two decitabine regimens: 3-day treatment (3-h intravenous infusion of 15 mg/m(2) given every 8 h for three consecutive days/cycle/6 weeks) or 5-day treatment (1-h intravenous infusion of 20 mg/m(2) once daily on days 1-5/cycle/4 weeks).

Homeodomain interacting protein kinase 2 (HIPK2) functions as either a co-repressor or a co-activator of transcriptional regulators. Dysregulation of HIPK2 is associated with cancer and neurological disease. Recently, we found that HIPK2 is also an important driver of kidney fibrosis in the HIV-1 transgenic murine model, Tg26.

Many studies have addressed the hazardous role of cigarette smoking on male fertility, but the exact molecular mechanisms involved in the impairments caused by nicotine remain unclear. To evaluate the detrimental effects of nicotine exposure on spermatogenesis, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry analysis were performed to screen and identify differentially expressed proteins from the testes of mice exposed to nicotine daily. Data mining analysis indicated that the 15 identified proteins were mainly involved in actin cytoskeleton regulation and in the tricarboxylic acid cycle, which are related to cell motility.

Introduction: Intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid (HA) is often used as therapy for knee osteoarthritis because it is less expensive and less aggressive than total knee replacement. Therefore, it is important to document whether HA is safe and efficacious. We tested whether single and multiple injection viscosupplementation with HA is associated with clinically meaningful pain relief in a new randomized clinical trial (RCT).

Background: Complex lower extremity deformities include multidirectional foot and ankle deformities, which are complicated therapeutic and surgical challenges. Correction often requires several stages, which is time consuming and costly. The need to restore the physical, mechanical, and cosmetic aspects of the lower extremity results in a difficult balancing act between these concerns and the deformity correction and soft tissue reconstruction.

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether soybean oligosaccharides (SO) protects heart function against myocardium ischemia reperfusion (MIR) injury. Hearts were 20min global ischemia and 50min reperfusion. Rats were fed for 30days with saline (sham and MIR groups) or the SO (200 or 400mg/kg body weight, daily).

Currently, there is major interest in the functions of apelin-13, an endogenous ligand for the orphan G-protein coupled receptor APJ, a receptor that closely resembles the angiotensin receptor AT1. In the present study, the role of apelin-13 in angiogenesis and its mechanism as a novel angiogenic factor in myocardial microvascular endothelial cells (MMVECs) was investigated. It was revealed that apelin-13 can promote proliferation, migration and tube formation in MMVECs.

The Bax, cyt-c and caspase-3 proteins play an important role in regulating the myocardial apoptosis. Although very little is known about the specific signal pathways modulated by Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE), it seems advisable to suppose that GBE-induced antiapoptotic effect might be attributed to the regulation of the expression of these proteins. Our aim was to investigate whether GBE could attenuate ischemia/reperfusion-induced apoptosis in cardiac myocytes and its potential mechanisms.

Background: In the last decades, the skin island flap supplied by the vascular axis of sensitive superficial nerves, like the sural and saphenous nerves, has emerged as one of the most ideal reconstructive options for soft tissue coverage of lower limbs. The nutrient vessels of reversed superficial peroneal neurocutaneous island flap have been well described; however, it is still not commonly clinically applied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of reversed superficial peroneal neurocutaneous island flap for coverage of ankle and foot.

Introduction: Our objective is to assess the effects of low-frequency ultrasound combined with microbubbles on benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH).
Methods: Sixteen Beagle dogs with BPH were randomly assigned into 4 groups (n = 4): control group (without treatment), G1 group (injection with 2 mL of microbubble contrast agent); G2 group (21 kHz ultrasound); and G3 group (injection with 2 mL of micro-bubble contrast agent +21 kHz ultrasound). The histopathological damage to prostate cells was assessed via transmission electron microscopy and optical microscopy.

Reconstruction of weight-bearing surfaces at the foot and ankle is controversial. Free tissue transfer and local fasciocutaneous perforator flaps are preferred for plantar reconstruction, but high rates of flap breakdown and ulceration have caused unsatisfactory functional outcomes. We present a modified "sural fasciomyocutaneous perforator flap" and its functional outcome.

Urethral defects are common and frequent disorders and are difficult to treat. Simple natural or synthetic materials do not provide a satisfactory curative solution for long urethral defects, and urethroplasty with large areas of autologous tissues is limited and might interfere with wound healing. In this study, adipose-derived stem cells were used.

Metabolic impairments in maternal obesity and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) induce an abnormal environment in peripheral blood and cause vascular structure alterations which affect the placental development and function. A GDM model was developed using C57BL/6J female mice fed with high fat food (HF) (40% energy from fat) and a control group with control food (CF) (14% energy from fat) for 14 weeks before mating and throughout the gestation period. A subset of dams was sacrificed at gestational day (GD) 18.
