Genetic association of lipid-lowering drug target genes with pancreatic cancer: a Mendelian randomization study.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Division of Pancreatic Surgery, Department of General Surgery, Qilu Hospital, Shandong University, Jinan, 250012, China.

Previous studies have found that dyslipidemia is a risk factor for pancreatic cancer (PC), and that lipid-lowering drugs may reduce the risk of PC. However, it is not clear whether dyslipidemia causes PC. The Mendelian randomization (MR) study aimed to investigate the causal role of lipid traits in pancreatic cancer and to assess the potential impact of lipid-lowering drug targets on pancreatic cancer.

Electronic address:

Water quality monitoring is one of the critical aspects of industrial wastewater treatment, which is important for checking the treatment effect, optimizing the treatment technology and ensuring that the water quality meets the standard. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) is a key indicator for monitoring water quality, which reflects the degree of organic matter pollution in water bodies. However, the current methods for determining COD values have drawbacks such as slow speed and complicated operation, which hardly meet the demand of online monitoring.

Advanced Medical Research Institute, Qilu College of Medicine, Shandong University, Jinan, 250012, China. Electronic address:

Dysregulated lipid metabolism is linked to tumor progression. In this study, we identified Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 (NPC1L1) as a downstream effector of PKM2. In breast cancer cells, PKM2 knockout (KO) enhanced NPC1L1 expression while downregulating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) signaling pathway.

Background/objectives: Approved mRNA vaccines commonly use sequences modified with pseudouridine to enhance translation efficiency and mRNA stability. However, this modification can result in ribosomal frameshifts, reduced immunogenicity, and higher production costs. This study aimed to explore the potential of unmodified mRNA sequences for varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and evaluate whether codon optimization could overcome the limitations of pseudouridine modification.

NMDA receptor ligands have therapeutic potential in neurological and psychiatric disorders. We designed ()-3-(5-thienyl)carboxamido-2-aminopropanoic acid derivatives with nanomolar agonist potencies at NMDA receptor subtypes (GluN12/A-D). These compounds are superagonists at GluN1/2C compared to glycine and partial to full agonists at GluN1/2A and GluN1/2D but display functional antagonism at GluN1/2B due to low agonist efficacy.

Simultaneous Induction of Immunogenic Pyroptosis and PD-L1 Downregulation by One Single Photosensitizer for Synergistic Cancer Photoimmunotherapy.

J Med Chem

January 2025

Department of Medicinal Chemistry, Key Laboratory of Chemical Biology (Ministry of Education), School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong 250012, P. R. China.

Pyroptosis, an excellent form of immunogenic cell death that can effectively activate antitumor immune responses, is attracting considerable interest as a promising approach for cancer immunotherapy. Immunogenic pyroptosis can recruit and stimulate dendritic cells to provoke further activation and tumor infiltration of T cells by releasing danger-associated molecular patterns, thus improving the tumor response to PD-1/PD-L1 checkpoint blockade immunotherapy. Here, we report the discovery of a bifunctional photosensitizer Nile Violet that can simultaneously trigger caspase-3/GSDME-mediated immunogenic pyroptosis and PD-L1 downregulation for cancer photoimmunotherapy.

Dry socket, a common painful complication after tooth extraction, is typically caused by improper blood clot formation or its premature dislodgement, often exacerbated by bacterial infections. Traditional gelatin sponges, widely used as clinical fillers, provide favorable biocompatibility and hemostatic support but suffer from suboptimal hemostatic efficiency, lack of antimicrobial properties, and insufficient anticoagulant factors, which increase the risk of dry socket. Addressing these limitations, a novel tannic acid cross-linked gelatin sponge has been developed using directional lyophilization.
