Herbal hydrogels as a new class of sustainable functional materials have attracted extensive attention. However, the development of herbal hydrogels is significantly hindered due to their poor hydrogel performances and the lack of universal preparation methods. In this study, four herbal hydrogels composed of phytochemical polyphenols and stevioside compounds are prepared through a facile heating-cooling process, where multiple hydrogen bonding interactions between two monomers provide the main driving force for gelation.

Excessive accumulation of bilirubin in patients with hyperbilirubinemia can lead to tissue and organ damage and neurological diseases, and is even life-threatening in severe cases. Hemoperfusion is an effective method for removing bilirubin, but clinically used hemoperfusion adsorbents have unsatisfactory adsorption capacity and kinetics. In order to obtain a safe and efficient bilirubin adsorbent, Zr-based Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) material UiO-66 with high specific surface area and aqueous medium stability was prepared and modified with varying degrees of amination to improve its adsorption capacity.

Preparation of electrochemical horseradish peroxidase biosensor with black phosphorene-zinc oxide nanocomposite and their applications.

RSC Adv

October 2023

Key Laboratory of Laser Technology and Optoelectronic Functional Materials of Hainan Province, Key Laboratory of Functional Materials and Photoelectrochemistry of Haikou, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Hainan Normal University Haikou 571158 China

In this work, a novel and sensitive electrochemical biosensor was constructed based on a black phosphorene (BP) and nanosized zinc oxide (ZnO@BP) nanocomposite as a modifier, which was used for the immobilization of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) on a carbon ionic liquid electrode (CILE). The ZnO@BP nanocomposite was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method with stripped black phosphorus nanoplates and ZnO. The ZnO@BP and HRP-modified electrode was developed by a casting method.

Osimertinib, a third-generation epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI), has overcome the acquired resistance of first- and second-generation EGFR-TKIs due to the EGFR T790M mutation in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, acquired resistance to osimertinib remains a significant clinical challenge. Luteolin, a natural flavonoid from traditional Chinese medicine, has exerted antitumor effects in various tumors.

Colorectal cancer cell-secreted exosomal miRNA N-72 promotes tumor angiogenesis by targeting CLDN18.

Am J Cancer Res

August 2023

Department of Pathology, Affiliated Hospital of Jining Medical University, Jining Medical University Jining, Shandong, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, is crucial for the growth and spread of colorectal cancer (CRC), but the specific mechanisms involved are not fully understood, particularly regarding the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in this process.
  • - Researchers discovered that CRC cells can secrete a specific miRNA called N-72, which is present at high levels in the serum of CRC patients and helps promote endothelial cell migration and new blood vessel formation.
  • - The study revealed that miRNA N-72 is delivered to endothelial cells through exosomes, disrupting their junctions and enhancing angiogenesis, suggesting it could be a promising therapeutic target and biomarker for CRC.

Objectives: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a classic autoantibody-mediated disease in which pathogenic antibodies target postsynaptic membrane components, causing fluctuating skeletal muscle weakness and fatigue. Natural killer (NK) cells are heterogeneous lymphocytes that have gained increasing attention owing to their potential roles in autoimmune disorders. This study will investigate the relationship between the distinct NK cell subsets and MG pathogenesis.

Knowledge mapping of interleukin-33: a bibliometric study.

Am J Transl Res

February 2023

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, The First Affiliated Hospital, Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Jinan 250000, Shandong, China.

Interleukin-33 (IL-33) is a member of the IL-1 family of cytokines. IL-33 is associated with the expression of tissue damage or necrosis after increasing and being released into the cell, it influences the suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (ST2) receptor expression of a variety of immune cells (including mast cells and type 2 congenital lymphocytes). Furthermore, during type 2 innate immune reactions and allergic inflammation IL-33 plays a central role in immune amplification and "alarming"; thus, regulating immune responeses.

A bioinformatics approach to identifying the biomarkers and pathogenesis of major depressive disorder combined with acute myocardial infarction.

Am J Transl Res

February 2023

Department of Radiation Oncology and Shandong Province Key Laboratory of Radiation Oncology, Shandong Cancer Hospital and Institute, Shandong First Medical University and Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences Jinan, Shandong, China.

This study investigated the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder (MDD) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) using bioinformatics. We analyzed MDD and AMI (MDD-AMI) datasets provided by the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database for genes common to MDD and AMI using GEO2R and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). We also performed Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses, and we used Disease Ontology (DO) analysis to identify a) the pathways through which genes function and b) comorbidities.

Background: The outcome of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF) is often determined according to follicle and estradiol levels following gonadotropin stimulation. In previous studies, although most of them analyzed the estrogen level from ovaries or the average estrogen level of a single follicle, there was no study on the ratio of estrogen increase, which was also correlated with pregnancy outcomes in the clinic. This study aimed to make timely adjustments to follow-up medication to improve clinical outcomes based on the potential value of estradiol growth rate.

Multifunctional integration is the focus of hydrogel-based flexible sensors, and formation of a dual network (DN) could shed light on the fabrication of hydrogels with multifunctionality and enhanced properties. In this study, a DN hydrogel was fabricated by the self-assembly of herbal molecule glycyrrhizic acid (GA) as the first hydrogel network and subsequent photocrosslinking of methacrylated sodium alginate (SA-MA) to form the second network. Profiting from the good compatibility between the two hydrogel networks, the obtained DN hydrogels with a homogeneous porous microstructure were endowed with remarkably enlarged stretching (114.
