Nitrite-induced acute kidney injury with secondary hyperparathyroidism: Case report and literature review.

Rationale: Acute kidney injury (AKI) with hyperparathyroidism caused by nitrite was rare, and renal function and parathyroid hormone (PTH) decreased to normal range after therapy.

Patient Concerns: Acute kidney injury was diagnosed in a 40-year-old male with hyperparathyroidism and cyanosis of his hands and both forearms.

Diagnoses: The patient ate some recently pickled vegetables, and he experienced nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea without oliguria or anuria; Additionally, his hands and both forearms had a typical blue ash appearance.

Columnar cell variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (CCV-PTC) is an unusual neoplasm, the clinical behavior of which mainly depends on the encapsulation or infiltration. Patients with extensive extrathyroidal extension usually have an aggressive biological behavior. This study confirmed that beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) secreting invasive CCV-PTC has good prognosis comparing with a cohort of follicular cell differentiated thyroid carcinoma.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory arthritis and autoimmune disease, the etiology and pathogenesis of which remain largely unknown. In the present study, blood samples were harvested from patients with AS and from healthy volunteers as a normal control (NC) for RNA-sequencing. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the AS group compared with the NC group were identified, and gene ontology (GO) term and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses were subsequently performed.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the relationship between arginine-levodopa-induced growth hormone (GH) secretion and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in obese children. This study includes a total of 84 obese and 43 normal weight children. The obese subjects are divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of NAFLD.

Epstein-Barr (EB) virus infection has long been speculated to evoke systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Since a virus infection can induce interferon (IFN) system activation, we aimed to discover the relationship between the two in the progression of SLE in a Chinese inpatient cohort. Methods Peripheral blood mononuclear cells and sera were isolated from 116 SLE patients and 76 healthy controls.

Pioglitazone ameliorates retinal ischemia/reperfusion injury suppressing NLRP3 inflammasome activities.

Aim: To explore the role of Pioglitazone (Pio) on a mouse model of retinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury and to elucidate the potential mechanism.

Methods: Retinal ischemia was induced in mice by increasing the intraocular pressure, and Pio was administered 4h though periocular injection before I/R. The number of cells in the ganglion cell layer (GCL) was counted 7d after retinal I/R injury.

Understanding the molecular mechanisms regulating beige adipocyte formation may lead to the development of new therapies to combat obesity. Here, we report a miRNA-based autocrine regulatory pathway that controls differentiation of preadipocytes into beige adipocytes. We identify miR-327 as one of the most downregulated miRNAs targeting growth factors in the stromal-vascular fraction (SVF) under conditions that promote white adipose tissue (WAT) browning in mice.

Background: Non-diabetic renal disease (NDRD) has been widely known in diabetic patients. The clinical differentiation between diabetic nephropathy (DN) and NDRD is still not so clear and effective.

Aim: To analyse the pathological characteristics and distribution of renal injury in selected type 2 diabetic patients.

Angiotensin II receptors regulate muscle microvascular recruitment and the delivery of nutrients, oxygen, and insulin to muscle. Although angiotensin type 1 receptor antagonism increases muscle microvascular perfusion and insulin action, angiotensin type 2 receptor blockade markedly restricts muscle microvascular blood volume and decreases muscle delivery of insulin. To examine the effects of direct type 2 receptor stimulation using Compound 21 (C21) on microvascular perfusion, insulin delivery and action, and tissue oxygenation in muscle, overnight-fasted adult male rats were infused with C21 systemically.

Cystitis cystica et glandularis (CCEG) is a chronic cystitis that causes extreme agony in affected patients. However, there are lack of effective conservative treatments. In this study, it is evident that intravesicular sodium hyaluronate (SH) therapy significantly improved the clinical symptoms of CCEG patients and ameliorated the bladder mucosal inflammation and cell proliferation characteristics of the disease.

In the present study, miR-26a was significantly increased in cultured VSMCs stimulated by platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) and in arteries with neointimal lesion formation.

Interactions of Notch1 and TLR4 signaling pathways in DRG neurons of in vivo and in vitro models of diabetic neuropathy.

Understanding the interactions between Notch1 and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling pathways in the development of diabetic peripheral neuropathy may lead to interpretation of the mechanisms and novel approaches for preventing diabetic neuropathic pain. In the present study, the interactions between Notch1 and TLR4 signaling pathways were investigated by using dorsal root ganglion (DRG) from diabetic neuropathic pain rats and cultured DRG neurons under high glucose challenge. The results showed that high glucose induced not only Notch1 mRNA, HES1 mRNA, and TLR4 mRNA expression, but also Notch1 intracellular domain (NICD1) and TLR4 protein expression in DRG neurons.

Cytology in China developed from nothing and underwent a long journey from gynecologic cytology to that of all organs, laying a solid foundation for new developments in the 21st century. Thyroid fine-needle aspiration (FNA) was primarily developed in an endocrinology department and then in the clinical laboratory department or pathology department in the 1970-80s. Wrights staining is popular in endocrine and clinical laboratory departments, while hematoxylin and eosin staining is common in pathology.

Loading-Induced Reduction in Sclerostin as a Mechanism of Subchondral Bone Plate Sclerosis in Mouse Knee Joints During Late-Stage Osteoarthritis.

Objective: To establish an unbiased, 3-dimensional (3-D) approach that quantifies subchondral bone plate (SBP) changes in mouse joints, and to investigate the mechanism that mediates SBP sclerosis at a late stage of osteoarthritis (OA).

Methods: A new micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) protocol was developed to characterize the entire thickness of the SBP in the distal femur of a normal mouse knee. Four mouse models of severe joint OA were generated: cartilage-specific Egfr-knockout (Egfr-CKO) mice at 2 months after surgical destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM), Egfr-CKO mice with aging-related spontaneous OA, wild-type (WT) mice at 10 months after DMM, and WT mice at 14 weeks after DMM plus hemisectomy of the meniscus (DMMH) surgery.

Analysis of clinical features and pathology of serum HBsAg positive glomerulonephritis.

To analyze the relationship between the factors related to the occurrence of HBV-GN and serum HBsAg-positive glomerulonephritis. A total of 56 patients were enrolled in the present study. All enrolled cases were divided into two groups according to whether HBsAg and/or HBcAg was present in renal kidney tissue: patients with Hepatitis B virus-associated nephritis (HBV-GN group, 30 cases) and patients with hepatitis B virus-combined nephritis (HBV-CG group, 26 cases).

Esophageal Adenocarcinoma-Derived Extracellular Vesicle MicroRNAs Induce a Neoplastic Phenotype in Gastric Organoids.

There have been no reports describing the effects of cancer cell-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) on three-dimensional organoids. In this study, we delineated the proneoplastic effects of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC)-derived EVs on gastric organoids (gastroids) and elucidated molecular mechanisms underlying these effects. EVs were identified using PKH-67 staining.

Risk factors for mortality from pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) in non-HIV patients: a meta-analysis.

The number of patients with non-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) related pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) is increasing with widespread immunosuppressive treatment. We performed a meta-analysis to describe the clinical characteristics and factors associated with outcomes of PCP in HIV-negative patients. A total of 13 studies including 867 patients with non-HIV related PCP was included.

PADI2-Mediated Citrullination Promotes Prostate Cancer Progression.

Onset of castration-resistance prostate cancer (CRPC) after long-term androgen deprivation therapy remains a major obstacle in the treatment of prostate cancer. The peptidylarginine deiminase PADI2 has been implicated in chronic inflammatory diseases and cancer. Here we show that is an androgen-repressed gene and is upregulated in CRPC.
