Enhancement of Sensitivity to Tamoxifen by Berberine in Breast Cancer Cells by Inhibiting ER-α36 Expression.

Iran J Pharm Res

December 2022

Department of Genetics and Key Laboratory for Experimental Teratology of the Ministry of Education, Shandong University, Jinan, 250012, Shandong, China.

Berberine, an isoquinoline alkaloid purified from Chinese herbs, was verified to have antitumor effects. It has also been reported that berberine can enhance the anticancer effect of tamoxifen (TAM) in estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer cells; however, the involved underlying mechanism is still unclear. In the present study, the role of one variant of ER-α, ER-α36, in the TAM sensitizing effect of berberine was explored in TAM-resistant breast cancer cells.

Introduction: Primary cutaneous diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (PCDLBCL) after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is rare.

Aim: The literature that analyses the cutaneous manifestations of PCDLBCL and assesses the effect and the outcome of treatment is scarce.

Material And Methods: We described a case of PCDLBCL after TKA, whose cutaneous mass develops around surgical sites, mimicking a prosthetic joint infection.

DUB1 suppresses Hippo signaling by modulating TAZ protein expression in gastric cancer.

J Exp Clin Cancer Res

July 2022

Department of General Surgery, The Second Hospital, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, Shandong Province, People's Republic of China.

Background: The Hippo pathway functions as a tumor suppressor pathway in human cancers, while dysfunction of the Hippo pathway is frequently observed in malignancies. Although YAP/TAZ activity is tightly controlled by the phosphorylation cascade of the MST-LATS-YAP/TAZ axis, it is still unclear why the YAP/TAZ proteins are activated in human cancers despite Hippo pathway activation. Recent studies have suggested that in addition to phosphorylation, several other posttranslational modifications, including ubiquitination, also play critical roles in modulating TAZ function.

Neoadjuvant Hormonal Therapy for Prostate Cancer: Morphologic Features and Predictive Parameters of Therapy Response.

Adv Anat Pathol

July 2022

The Key Laboratory of Experimental Teratology, Ministry of Education and Department of Pathology, Shandong University QiLu Medical College, School of Basic Medical Sciences.

The primary goals of neoadjuvant hormonal therapy (NHT) in prostate cancer (PCa) are to reduce the size of the tumor, lower positive surgical margin rate, attempt to reach pathologic remission, and improve survival. Although NHT has not been recommended by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network as a primary treatment option for patients with localized PCa, NHT is increasingly used in clinical trials for locally advanced PCa. More importantly, with the development of novel androgen signaling inhibitors, such as abiraterone and enzalutamide, there has been renewed interests in revisiting the role of such treatment in the neoadjuvant setting.

The Neutrophil/Lymphocyte Ratio is an Independent Predictor of All-Cause Mortality in Patients with Idiopathic Hypereosinophilic Syndrome.

J Inflamm Res

March 2022

Department of General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Shandong University Qilu Hospital, Jinan City, Shandong Province, People's Republic of China.

Background: Idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome (IHES) often causes inflammatory damage to multiple organs. However, whether immune/inflammatory indicators and other factors are associated with mortality in patients with IHES remains unclear.

Patients And Methods: The clinical data and follow-up results of 167 patients with IHES were retrospectively analyzed using Cox regression analysis and receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC).

Background: Radiocephalic arteriovenous fistula (RCAVF) is the best access modality to be considered initially when planning arteriovenous fistula (AVF) for maintenance hemodialysis. Considering the higher incidence of RCAVF failed maturation (M), it is important to perform proper preoperative evaluation and identification of high-risk patients. There has been no study on the influence of preoperative cardiac function on the M and patency of AVFs.

The regulatory network of competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNA) exists widely in tumors and affects the expression of cancer-related genes, thus playing an important role in the development and prognosis of human tumors. In this research, we explored the role and mechanism of LINC00665 as a ceRNA in breast cancer. We analyzed the expression and targets of LINC00665 in breast cancer using bioinformatics, and detected their effects on breast cancer cells by CCK8, transwell, colony formation and flow cytometry assays.

Despite the potent effect of intermittent parathyroid hormone (PTH) treatment on promoting new bone formation, bone mineral density (BMD) rapidly decreases upon discontinuation of PTH administration. To uncover the mechanisms behind this adverse phenomenon, we investigated the immediate responses in bone microstructure and bone cell activities to PTH treatment withdrawal and the associated long-term consequences. Unexpectedly, intact female and estrogen-deficient female rats had distinct responses to the discontinuation of PTH treatment.

Objective: Recent studies have provided insights into the gut microbiota in autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, these studies were restricted owing to limited sampling at the unitary stage of childhood. Herein, we aimed to reveal developmental characteristics of gut microbiota in a large cohort of subjects with ASD combined with interindividual factors impacting gut microbiota.

Design: A large cohort of 773 subjects with ASD (aged 16 months to 19 years), 429 neurotypical (NT) development subjects (aged 11 months to 15 years) were emolyed to determine the dynamics change of gut microbiota across different ages using 16S rRNA sequencing.

To evaluate the clinical utility of a Chinese scoring system for hepatitis B liver failure in a prospective and multicenter study. Clinical data for 1,143 patients with hepatitis B liver failure who had been followed up for a minimum of 6 months were collected from seven liver disease centers across China. The disease severity and prognosis for the patients were predicted using the Chinese scoring system and compared to those predicted with the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score, MELD-Na score, and Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) score.

Resolving the difference between left-sided and right-sided colorectal cancer by single-cell sequencing.

JCI Insight

January 2022

Department of Physiology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, China.

Colorectal cancers (CRCs) exhibit differences in incidence, pathogenesis, molecular pathways, and outcome depending on the location of the tumor. The transcriptomes of 27,927 single human CRC cells from 3 left-sided and 3 right-sided CRC patients were profiled by single-cell RNA-Seq (scRNA-Seq). Right-sided CRC harbors a significant proportion of exhausted CD8+ T cells of a highly migratory nature.
