Key Laboratory of Special Functional Aggregated Materials, Key Laboratory of Colloid and Interface Chemistry, Ministry of Education, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Shandong University Jinan 250100 P. R. China

In this work, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was incorporated into the networks of polyacrylamide/polyacrylic acid (PAM/PAA) to prepare novel PAM/PAA/PVA Triple-network (TN) hydrogels by an polymerization and repeated freezing-thawing (F-T) process. The TN hydrogels have not only high mechanical strength, but also a moderate swelling ability by varying the weight ratio of calcium chloride (CaCl) and PVA and free shaping. The compressive stress of the as-prepared hydrogels could reach 11 MPa, and the highest stretching stress could reach 0.

State Key Laboratory of Crystal Materials, Key Laboratory of Functional Crystal Materials and Device, Shandong University Jinan 250100 China

β-GaO, a semiconductor material, has attracted considerable attention given its potential applications in high-power devices, such as high-performance field-effect transistors. For decades, β-GaO has been processed through chemical mechanical polishing (CMP). Nevertheless, the understanding of the effect of OH on β-GaO processed through CMP with an alkaline slurry remains limited.

The level of glutathione (GSH) is increased in many cancer cells. Consuming intracellular GSH by chemical small molecules that specifically target GSH is a new strategy to treat cancer. Recently, we synthesized and proved that a new compound 2-(7-(diethylamino)-2-oxo-2-chromen-3-yl)cyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-dione (PBQC) could target to and consume intracellular GSH specifically, but, it is not clear if PBQC can affect cancer cell growth and the activity of the nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) which is a key factor involved in regulation of cancer cell growth.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) usually aggregate irregularly and hardly redisperse in water. Moreover, the affinity of LDHs is poor for organic compounds. In this study, three different core-shell composites, CMS@MgAl-LDH, CMS@NiAl-LDH, and CMS@ZnAl-LDH, were synthesized by direct fabrication of LDH nanoplatelets onto carbon microspheres (CMS) for the removal of the adsorbed 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D).

Photocatalytic overall water splitting is realized by taking advantage of the semiconductive and porous properties of MIL-125(Ti). CoPi and Pt are deposited into MIL-125(Ti) in two steps. The co-catalysts CoPi and Pt not only act as reactive sites for oxygen and hydrogen evolution, respectively, but also improve the photogenerated charge separation efficiency.

Objective: A meta-analysis was undertaken to provide evidence-based clinical trials comparing radiofrequency ablation with partial nephrectomy for small renal mass.

Methods: We searched through the major medical databases such as Pub Med, EMBASE, Medline, Science Citation Index, Web of Science and CNKI (Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure Database) and Wangfang (Database of Chinese Ministry of Science & Technology) for all published studies without any limit on language from May 2007 until May 2015. The following search terms wereused: partial nephrectomy, radiofrequency ablation, renal cell carcinoma, small renal tumor or mass.

The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and complications and compare the efficacy of medical thoracoscopic talc pleurodesis among patients with different types of tumors and different pathological classifications of lung cancer as well as to evaluate the role of postoperative negative pressure chest tube drainage. A total of 1061 patients with malignant pleural effusion who underwent thoracoscopic pleurodesis were analyzed retrospectively. The complications, postoperative drainage time, and efficacy of pleurodesis among patients with different types of tumors and different pathological classifications of lung cancer were assessed.

MicroRNAs are small non-coding RNAs that are able to regulate gene expression and play important roles in some biological and pathological processes, including the myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Recent findings demonstrated that miR-1 exacerbated I/R-induced injury. This study was to investigate theanti-apoptotic property of miR-1 inhibition and the potential regulatory mechanism.

Sphingosylphosphorylcholine in cancer progress.

Int J Clin Exp Med

November 2015

Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Animal Cells and Developmental Biology, School of Life Science, Shandong University Jinan 250100, China.

Sphingosylphosphorylcholine (SPC) is a naturally occurring bioactive sphingolipid in blood plasma, metabolizing from the hydrolysis of the membrane sphingolipid. It has been shown to exert multifunctional role in cell physiological regulation either as an intracellular second messenger or as an extracellular agent through G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs). Because of elevated levels of SPC in malicious ascites of patients with cancer, the role of SPC in tumor progression has prompted wide interest.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study showed that lower miR-153 expression is associated with more advanced clinical stages, worse lymph node involvement, increased distant metastasis, and poorer differentiation in NSCLC patients.
  • * Kaplan-Meier survival analysis suggested that patients with lower miR-153 levels have significantly worse overall survival rates, indicating that it could serve as an independent prognostic factor for NSCLC.

KDP single crystals were grown in aqueous solution by using "point seeds" with a defined crystallographic direction of 59° to the Z axis. When hillock slopes on the (100) face of KDP crystals were measured within the supersaturation (σ) range of 0 < σ ≤ 0.06, the slope of hillocks with hollow cores depended nonlinearly on supersaturation.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) predicts high mortality in severely burned patients. Apoptosis plays a significant role during AKI; however, the apoptotic mechanisms underlying AKI induced by burn injury are not clear. Here, we report a critical role for tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL)-Death receptor 5 (DR5) signaling in the pathogenesis of AKI.

In the present paper, an automatic and efficient method for searching for dwarf nova candidates is presented. The methods PCA (principal component analysis) and SVM (support vector machine) are applied in the newly released SDSS-DR9 spectra. The final dimensions of the feature space are determined by the identification accuracy of training samples with different dimensions constrained by SVM.

Adsorption of ammonium and phosphate by feather protein based semi-interpenetrating polymer networks hydrogel as a controlled-release fertilizer.

Environ Technol

April 2014

Shandong Key Laboratory of Water Pollution Control and Resource Reuse, School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Shandong University Jinan 250100, People's Republic of China.

A new feather protein-grafted poly(potassium acrylate)/polyvinyl alcohol (FP-g-PKA/PVA) semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) hydrogel was produced through graft copolymerization with FP as a basic macromolecular skeletal material, acrylic acid as a monomer and PVA as a semi-IPNs polymer. The adsorption of ammonium and phosphate ions from aqueous solution using the new hydrogel as N and P controlled-release fertilizer with water-retention capacity was studied. The effects of pH value, concentration, contact time and ion strength on NH4+ and PO3-4 removal by FP-g-PKA/PVA semi-IPNs hydrogel were investigated using batch adsorption experiments.
