Iron is the most abundant transition metal in the brain and is essential for brain development and neuronal function; however, its abnormal accumulation is also implicated in various neurological disorders. The olfactory bulb (OB), an early target in neurodegenerative diseases, acts as a gateway for environmental toxins and contains diverse neuronal populations with distinct roles. This study explored the cell-specific vulnerability to iron in the OB using a mouse model of intranasal administration of ferric ammonium citrate (FAC).

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), as animal polysaccharides, are linked to proteins to form various types of proteoglycans. Bacterial GAG lyases are not only essential enzymes that spoilage bacteria use for the degradation of GAGs, but also valuable tools for investigating the biological function and potential therapeutic applications of GAGs. The ongoing discovery and characterization of novel GAG lyases has identified an increasing number of lyases suitable for functional studies and other applications involving GAGs, which include oligosaccharide sequencing, detection and removal of specific glycan chains, clinical drug development and the design of novel biomaterials and sensors, some of which have not yet been comprehensively summarized.

Background And Aims: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a key therapeutic approach for pediatric patients with hematologic and non-hematologic disorders. However, post-transplant pulmonary complications remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) are essential for the early detection of pulmonary dysfunction, yet their application in pediatric HSCT recipients has yielded inconsistent results.

Background: Postoperative sore throat (POST) is a significant adverse effect after endotracheal intubation, especially with double-lumen endotracheal tubes (DLTs). Ultrasound-guided internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve block (US-guided iSLNB) presents a potential intervention for POST. In this first randomized controlled trial to date, we aimed to investigate the effects of US-guided iSLNB, with or without perineural dexmedetomidine, on the incidence and severity of POST following DLTs.

Noncovalent forces have a significant impact on photophysical properties, and the flexible employment of weak forces facilitates the design of novel luminescent materials with a variety of applications. The arene-perfluoroarene (AP) force, as one type of π-hole/π interaction, shows unique directionality, involving an electron-deficient π-hole interacting with a π-electron-rich region, facilitating precise orientation and stabilization in supramolecular structures. Here we present an amination engineering protocol to build a perfluoroarene library based on an octafluoronaphthalene skeleton with various steric and electronic properties.

The metabolic activity of tumor cells leads to the acidification of the surrounding microenvironment, which provides new strategies for the application of nanotechnology in cancer therapy. Researchers have developed various types of pH-responsive nanomaterials based on the tumor acidic microenvironment. This review provides an in-depth discussion on the design mechanisms, drug-loading strategies, and application pathways of tumor acidic microenvironment-responsive nanodrug delivery systems.

Background: In the past, numerous investigations have delved into the influence of p27 (p27kip) on the prognosis and clinicopathological characteristics of colorectal cancer (CRC), yielding conclusions that are not universally statistically significant, thus rendering the discourse rather contentious.
Methods: We collected available articles published before August 2024 and extracted data to analyze the association between the expression of p27 and the prognosis and clinicopathological features of CRC. In addition, we used Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA), University of Alabama at Birmingham's Cancer Data Analysis Portal (UALCAN), and the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) to validate our results.

With the miniaturization, integration and intelligence of sweat electrochemical sensor technology, hydrogel flexible sensors have demonstrated immense potential in the field of real-time and non-invasive personal health monitoring. However, it remains a challenge to integrate excellent mechanical properties, self-healing properties, and electrochemical sensing capabilities into the preparation of hydrogel-based flexible sensors. The utilization of CBPG (cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)@bovine serum albumin (BSA)@polyethyleneimine (PEI) glucose oxidase (GOD) nanomaterial) as both an enhancing phase and sensor probe within a hydrogel matrix, with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) serving as the primary network constituent, has been proposed as a non-invasive technique for monitoring trace glucose levels in sweat.

The dose-response relationship between toxicants and organisms is the most fundamental principle in toxicological risk assessment. However, multiphasic non-linear responses are poorly understood and the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. In this study, we subjected the indicator plant Tillandsia usneoides to 5 or 10 time gradients of 1 mM Pb, and assessed the response patterns of five damage markers and eight resistance markers in the leaves.

Toll-Like Receptors (TLRs) is a pattern recognition receptor that connects innate and adaptive immunity and participates in inflammatory responses play a key role in common autoimmune diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), psoriasis, and Sjögren's syndrome (SS) by participating in antigen recognition, immune cell activation, and inflammatory factor release. Due to the multi-component and multi-target characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the role of TCM active ingredients acting on TLRs has been widely studied. This article describes the relationship between TLR and four autoimmune diseases, as well as a review of the efficacy of TLR intervention by active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine.
