Article Synopsis
  • A study investigated the knowledge of laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) among Chinese otolaryngologists through a cross-sectional survey involving 2,254 participants across 220 medical centers.
  • The results showed that 96.4% of participants had heard of LPRD, primarily learning about it from academic conferences, but only a small percentage were aware of the most accurate diagnostic methods and comprehensive treatment options.
  • Overall, while otolaryngologists demonstrated some awareness regarding LPRD, there is a significant need for improved education and resources to enhance their understanding of the disease.

N6-methyladenosine (mA) is the product of the most prevalent mRNA modification in eukaryotic cells. Accumulating evidence shows that tumor microenvironment (TME) plays a pivotal role in tumor development. However, the underlying relationship between mA modification and the TME of a papillary renal cell carcinoma (PRCC) is still unclear.

Kidney cancer encompasses a range of primary cancers, such as clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) and papillary renal cell carcinoma (pRCC). Our knowledge about the tumor microenvironment (TME) of kidney cancer is still limited. Therefore, we comprehensively assessed the TME of kidney cancers (including ccRCC and pRCC) using the ESTIAMTE, and CIBERSORT algorithms, and conducted distinct functional and correlation analyses with data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC), Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), Connectivity map and CellMiner database.

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is an aggressive tumor and the most common subtype of RCC. Ferroptosis is a novel form of regulated cell death, and ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) have been associated with the prognosis of patients with certain cancers. However, the detailed prognostic correlation between FRGs and ccRCC has not yet been elucidated.

Bladder cancer (BCa) is the most prevalent malignancy of the urinary system. Circular RNAs (circRNAs), a novel subtype of non-coding RNAs, play a crucial role in physiological and developmental processes. CircRNAs mainly function as regulators of splicing process and transcription, microRNA sponges, and protein brackets.

Histone deacetylases (HDAC) family is vital for tumorigenesis and tumor progression. However, the exact role of the HDAC family in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) remains unclear. Based on The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC), and The Human Protein Atlas (HPA) database, we investigated and validated the expression profile, clinical significance and prognostic value of HDAC family members in ccRCC.

Treatment options for gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) are limited and GBC prognosis remains poor. There is no well-accepted targeted therapy to date, so effective biomarkers of GBC are urgently needed. Here we investigated the expression and correlations of fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFR1-4) and 18 fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) in two independent patient cohorts and evaluated their prognostic significance.

Inflammatory allergic reaction is the main cause of allergic rhinitis (AR). Previous studies indicated that miR-224-5p was downregulated in the nasal mucosa of patients with AR, while the function of miR-224-5p in AR remains unclear. To explore this issue, AR mouse model was established using ovalbumin (OVA).

Significance: Highly irregular cornea leads to poor vision, glare, and starbursts. Although treatment is still at the exploration stage, topography-guided Contoura surgery has excellent potential for the treatment of highly irregular corneas.

Purpose: This case series reviews three patients (one with abnormal back elevation, one with corneal scar after fungal keratitis, and one with post-laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis central islands) treated with topography-guided Contoura surgery.

Background: Sorafenib can improve the survival of metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) patients. However, its benefits are modest, as patients eventually become resistant, and the mechanisms remain elusive. NUPR1, a stress-induced protein, has been reported in malignancies and functions as an oncogene by modulating the stress response, facilitating survival in harsh environments and conferring drug resistance.

Mucus composition abnormalities in sinonasal mucosa of chronic rhinosinusitis with and without nasal polyps.

Inflammation

October 2021

Department of Otolaryngology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, 1E Kent Ridge Rd, Singapore, 119228, Singapore.

Mucus secretion and its composition are vital in the maintenance of airway health, among which hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) are thought to be involved in the regulation of mucin synthesis and regulation. Nasal mucus composition difference between healthy individuals and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) patients may contribute to the pathology of chronic nasal diseases, but so far, their role has yet to be completely understood. Nasal biopsy specimens were obtained from 24 healthy subjects and 99 patients with CRS without (CRSsNP, n=36) or with (CRSwNP, n=63) nasal polyps.

Histone deacetylase (HDAC) 10, a class II family, has been implicated in various tumors and non-tumor diseases, which makes the discovery of biological functions and novel inhibitors a fundamental endeavor. In cancers, HDAC10 plays crucial roles in regulating various cellular processes through its epigenetic functions or targeting some decisive molecular or signaling pathways. It also has potential clinical utility for targeting tumors and non-tumor diseases, such as renal cell carcinoma, prostate cancer, immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN), intracerebral hemorrhage, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and schizophrenia.

The detrimental effect of iron on OA chondrocytes: Importance of pro-inflammatory cytokines induced iron influx and oxidative stress.

J Cell Mol Med

June 2021

Department of spine surgery, Shandong Provincial Hospital, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, Jinan, China.

Iron overload is common in elderly people which is implicated in the disease progression of osteoarthritis (OA), however, how iron homeostasis is regulated during the onset and progression of OA and how it contributes to the pathological transition of articular chondrocytes remain unknown. In the present study, we developed an in vitro approach to investigate the roles of iron homeostasis and iron overload mediated oxidative stress in chondrocytes under an inflammatory environment. We found that pro-inflammatory cytokines could disrupt chondrocytes iron homeostasis via upregulating iron influx transporter TfR1 and downregulating iron efflux transporter FPN, thus leading to chondrocytes iron overload.

Background: Bladder cancer (BC) is one of the most common malignant urological cancer in the world. Because of its characteristic of easy-recurrence and muscle-invasive, advances in our genetic understanding of bladder cancer should be translated into prognostic indicators.

Methods: We investigated 16 m6A RNA methylation regulators from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and The Human Protein Atlas (HPA) database.

Iron overload is common in elderly people which is associated with an increased prevalence of osteoarthritis (OA), but the exact role of iron in the development of OA has not been established. The aim of the present study is to elucidate the connection between iron overload and OA using an iron overloaded mice model, as well as to explore the role of iron homeostasis, iron transporters dependent iron influx in OA pathogenesis. The iron overloaded mice model was established and OA was surgically induced.

Article Synopsis
  • SKA3 is a protein that helps cells divide and is linked to cancer growth, specifically in a type of throat cancer called laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC).
  • High levels of SKA3 in cancer cells are connected to faster tumor growth and poor health outcomes for patients.
  • SKA3 works by changing how cancer cells get energy, helping them resist treatments, and could be a possible target for new cancer therapies.
