Adult respiratory distress syndrome due to viral pneumonia occurs predominantly in immunodeficient populations; adult respiratory distress syndrome secondary to human herpesvirus HHV-6 and HHV-7 pneumonia is extremely rare. Whipple's disease, caused by , a Gram-positive bacillus and obligate intracellular pathogen, is clinically challenging to diagnose. Whipple's disease is a chronic multisystem infectious disease caused by , most often affecting the gastrointestinal tract and joints, seldom the lungs.

Potential biomarkers for immune monitoring after renal transplantation.

Transpl Immunol

June 2024

Shandong Provincial Qianfoshan Hospital, Shandong University, Jinan, China; Department of Urology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University & Shandong Provincial Qianfoshan Hospital, Jinan, China. Electronic address:

Renal transplantation represents the foremost efficacious approach for ameliorating end-stage renal disease. Despite the current state of advanced renal transplantation techniques and the established postoperative immunosuppression strategy, a subset of patients continues to experience immune rejection during both the early and late postoperative phases, ultimately leading to graft loss. Consequently, the identification of immunobiomarkers capable of predicting the onset of immune rejection becomes imperative in order to facilitate early intervention strategies and enhance long-term prognoses.

Background: To establish and validate a predictive model combining pretreatment multiparametric MRI-based radiomic signatures and clinical characteristics for the risk evaluation of early rapid metastasis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients.

Methods: The cutoff time was used to randomly assign 219 consecutive patients who underwent chemoradiation treatment to the training group (n = 154) or the validation group (n = 65). Pretreatment multiparametric magnetic resonance (MR) images of individuals with NPC were employed to extract 428 radiomic features.

Background: Dual-energy computed tomography (CT) can provide a range of image information beyond conventional CT through virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs). The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of material decomposition in detector-based spectral CT on radiomics features and effectiveness of using deep learning-based image synthesis to improve the reproducibility of radiomics features.

Methods: In this paper, spectral CT image data from 45 esophageal cancer patients were collected for investigation retrospectively.

Observational studies have shown an association between liver dysfunction and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but the causality relationship between them is unclear. We aimed to determine whether there is a bidirectional causal relationship between liver function indicators (alanine aminotransferase, ; aspartate aminotransferase, ; alkaline phosphatase, ; -glutamyltransferase, ) and HCC. Our two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study acquired single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with liver function indicators (, = 134,182; , = 134,154; , = 118,309; , = 105,030) and with HCC ( = 197,611) from publicly available genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of East Asian ancestry in Japan (BioBank Japan, BBJ).

Background: Programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) monoclonal antibody, pembrolizumab, is a promising drug for platinum-pretreated, recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC). We aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of pembrolizumab compared with chemotherapy for Chinese patients in this NPC.

Methods: The cost-effectiveness of pembrolizumab versus chemotherapy was evaluated using a partitioned survival model with a 5-year boundary.

Rejection is the primary factor affecting the functionality of a kidney post-transplant, where its prompt prediction of risk significantly influences therapeutic strategies and clinical outcomes. Current graft health assessment methods, including serum creatinine measurements and transplant kidney puncture biopsies, possess considerable limitations. In contrast, urine serves as a direct indicator of the graft's degenerative stage and provides a more accurate measure than peripheral blood analysis, given its non-invasive collection of kidney-specific metabolite.

Objectives: The pathogenesis of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) remains not fully understood. Our previous studies demonstrated that miR-21-5p may participate in the TMJOA development and the interaction between circRNA-ACAP2 (CircACAP2) and miR-21-5p. Our present study aimed to explore the biological functions and regulatory mechanisms of CircACAP2 in TMJOA.

Salmonella constitutes a prevalent alimentary pathogen, instigating zoonotic afflictions. Consequently, the prompt discernment of Salmonella in sustenance is of cardinal significance. Lateral flow assays utilizing colorimetric methodologies adequately fulfill the prerequisites of point-of-care diagnostics, however, their detection threshold remains elevated, generally permitting only qualitative discernment, an impediment to the preliminary screening of nascent pathogens.

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University & Shandong Provincial Qianfoshan Hospital, Key Laboratory of Laparoscopic Technology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University, Jinan, 250000, China.

Nicotine is a known toxin, but its relationship with cervicovaginal high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection is uncertain. This study aimed to investigate whether tobacco exposure is associated with elevated cervicovaginal HR-HPV infection in US women, and if the strength of this association varies with the degree of exposure. Cross-sectional data from the 2011-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which included a nationally representative sample of US women, were used for the study.

Background: Duane retraction syndrome (DRS) is known to relate to the absence of the abducens nucleus, with abnormal innervation of the lateral rectus (LR) muscle by branchesof the oculomotor nerve (CN III). The purposes of this study were to investigate the morphological characteristics of the oculomotor nerve (CN III), the abducens nerve (CN VI), and the extraocular muscles in patients with clinically diagnosed Duane retraction syndrome (DRS) using MRI. In addition, we assessed the association between ocular motility, horizontal rectus muscle volumes, and CN III/VI in patients with Duane retraction syndrome (DRS).

The multi-target simultaneous detection strategy based on potential-resolved electrochemiluminescence (ECL) has still been a research hotspot in analytical science, but the limited selection of ECL luminophores hinders the development of this field. Herein, polyethyleneimine functionalized perylene derivatives (PTC-PEI) and luminol functionalized gold nanoparticles (Lu-Au NPs) possessed significantly resolved emission potentials as ECL luminophore. The ternary ECL system was constructed with MoS nanoflowers and KSO as the coreaction accelerator and coreactant respectively, which significantly improved the cathode ECL emission of PTC-PEI.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to identify the genetic causes of empty follicle syndrome (EFS) in women experiencing primary infertility.
  • Researchers performed whole exome sequencing on four affected women and discovered a harmful homozygous variant in the LHCGR gene, which was not present in a control group of 100 healthy individuals.
  • The findings suggest that this new variant contributes to female sterility and highlights the importance of genetic testing for LHCGR mutations in women with EFS.
