Tuberculosis (TB) incidence has been in steady decline in China over the last few decades. However, ongoing demographic transition, fueled by aging, and massive internal migration could have important implications for TB control in the future. We collated data on TB notification, demography, and drug resistance between 2004 and 2017 across seven cities in Shandong, the second most populous province in China.

Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)‑9 is associated with the severity of ventilator‑associated pneumonia (VAP), while an rs1056629 SNP located in the 3'‑untranslated region (UTR) of MMP‑9 affects the microRNA (miRNA/miR)‑491‑mediated regulation of MMP‑9 expression. In the present study, the effect of rs1056629 on the development of VAP in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was investigated. Patients with COPD were enrolled in the study and their genotypes of rs1056629 (CC, CA or AA) were determined.

MiR-1207-5p/CX3CR1 axis regulates the progression of osteoarthritis via the modulation of the activity of NF-κB pathway.

Int J Rheum Dis

August 2020

Department of Joint Surgery, Shandong Provincial Hospital, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, Jinan, Shandong, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Osteoarthritis (OA) involves cartilage degradation and osteophyte formation, and this study specifically investigates the role of the microRNA miR-1207-5p in OA development.
  • Analysis revealed that miR-1207-5p levels decrease while CX3CR1 levels increase in OA cartilage, and boosting miR-1207-5p helps reduce cell damage and ECM degradation caused by inflammation.
  • The findings suggest that miR-1207-5p has protective effects against OA by targeting CX3CR1, potentially offering new insights for OA treatment strategies.

Introduction: Estrogen is a key factor in breast cancer carcinogenesis, and reductions in its synthesis can decrease breast cancer risk. Anastrozole can reduce plasma estrogen levels by inhibiting the enzyme aromatase, and is approved for adjuvant treatment of breast cancer. We report a case of pulmonary cryptococcosis in a patient who was treated with anastrozole for an early-stage tumor.

Fluzoparib increases radiation sensitivity of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells without BRCA1/2 mutation, a novel PARP1 inhibitor undergoing clinical trials.

J Cancer Res Clin Oncol

March 2020

Department of Radiation Oncology, Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital, National Clinical Research Center for Cancer, Key Laboratory of Cancer Prevention and Therapy, Tianjin, Tianjin's Clinical Research Center for Cancer, Tianjin, 300060, China.

Propose: Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 inhibitors were originally investigated as anti-cancer therapeutics with BRCA1/2 genes mutation. Here, we investigate the effectiveness of a novel PARP1 inhibitor fluzoparib, for enhancing the radiation sensitivity of NSCLC cells lacking BRCA1/2 mutation.

Methods: We used MTS assays, western blotting, colony formation assays, immunofluorescence staining, and flow cytometry to evaluate the radiosensitization of NSCLC cells to fluzoparib and explore the underlying mechanisms in vitro.

In the present study effect of 7--pyrrolo[2,3-]pyrimidine derivative (7-HPPD) on viability of MKN28 and MKN74 gastric cancer cells was investigated. There was no significant change in GES-1 cell viability on treatment with 7-HPPD for 48 h. MKN28 and MKN74 cell viability was reduced to 21 and 23%, respectively, on treatment with 7-HPPD at concentration of 50 µM.

Background: Breast cancer (BRCA) is the most prevalent cancer that threatens female health. A growing body of evidence has demonstrated the non-negligible effects of messenger RNAs (mRNAs) on biological processes involved in cancers; however, there is no definite conclusion regarding the role of mRNAs in predicting the prognosis of BRCA patients.

Materials And Methods: We systematically screened the mRNA expression landscape and clinical data of samples from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA).

The abnormal expression of microRNAs (miRNAs/miRs) has a critical function in the formation and progression of non‑small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Therefore, understanding the association between NSCLC and dysregulated miRNAs may allow for the identification of novel diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers for patients with this malignancy. Previous studies have validated miR‑208a as a cancer‑associated miRNA in multiple different types of human cancer, however, its expression pattern and precise function in NSCLC remains yet to be elucidated.

KCNJ4 (potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily J member 4) belongs to the inward rectifier potassium channel family, which is inhibited by novel anticancer agents. However, the biologic significance of KCNJ4 in lung adenocarcinoma (LADC) is largely unknown. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the expression, clinical correlation, and prognostic value of KCNJ4 in LADC and normal lung tissues according to data from The Cancer Genome Atlas datasets.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted on the relationship between air pollution and the risk of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) among 9,344 patients in Jinan, China, from 2011 to 2015.
  • Researchers analyzed various air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM) and carbon monoxide (CO), and assessed their impact over multiple time frames (3, 6, 9, and 12 months) prior to TB diagnosis.
  • While overall findings didn't strongly link air pollution to TB risks, significant associations were found specifically with PM and CO when looking at 3- and 9-month exposure windows, particularly in male and female patients under 60.

Thioridazine inhibits autophagy and sensitizes glioblastoma cells to temozolomide.

Int J Cancer

April 2019

Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Brain Tumor Research Centre, Department of Biomedicine, University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) has a poor prognosis with an overall survival of 14-15 months after surgery, radiation and chemotherapy using temozolomide (TMZ). A major problem is that the tumors acquire resistance to therapy. In an effort to improve the therapeutic efficacy of TMZ, we performed a genome-wide RNA interference (RNAi) synthetic lethality screen to establish a functional gene signature for TMZ sensitivity in human GBM cells.
