The effect of platelet-rich plasma on pain, function, and quality of life of patients with knee osteoarthritis.

Background. New studies in the management of knee osteoarthritis have focused on modern therapeutic methods stimulating cartilage healing process. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of 2 courses of leucocyte-rich PRP (LR-PRP) injections on patients' QOL and functions and also the relationship between the PRP concentration and mentioned variables.

A piece of broken metal from intubation stylet retained in tracheobronchial tree: a case report.

Intubation stylets are still being used in many medical centers for difficult intubations. Although very rare, it may break inside the trachea during endotracheal intubation despite routine pre-assessments by anesthesiologists and may surprisingly move deep into the tracheobronchial tree. In this case report, we describe a rare complication after stylet or guide-wire intubation in a patient in whom, a broken piece of metal guide remained in his tracheobronchial tree for 3 days.

A prospective observational study of paediatric cardiac surgery outcomes in a postoperative intensive care unit in Iran.

Objective: To evaluate the incidence of complications, morbidity and mortality, and the associated risk factors with mortality at a Paediatric Cardiology Intensiv Care Unit of a developing country.

Methods: The prospective observational study was conducted at Shahid Modarres Hospital, Tehran, Iran, from August 2009 to July 2010. A total of 202 patients were monitored from the time they entered the Paediatric Cardiology Intensive Care Unit till their final discharge.

Red grape seed extract improves lipid profiles and decreases oxidized low-density lipoprotein in patients with mild hyperlipidemia.

Hyperlipidemia can lead to atherosclerosis by lipoprotein deposition inside the vessel wall and oxidative stress induction that leads to the formation of atherosclerotic plaque. Oxidized low-density lipoprotein particles (Ox-LDL) have a key role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. The lipid-lowering properties and antioxidants of the grape seed can be beneficial in atherosclerosis prevention.

Postoperative pain after laparoscopic cholecystectomy: a randomized clinical trial comparing intraperitoneal bupivacaine versus intravenous pethidine.

Pain is the most common complaint of patients on the first day after laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). This clinical trial compared the effects of intraperitoneal (IP) bupivacaine and intravenous (IV) pethidine on this pain. Forty-eight patients who underwent LC were randomly assigned to 2 groups of IP bupivacaine and IV pethidine.

Bilateral ovarian involvement: a rare presentation of disseminated multiple myeloma.

Extramedullary spread of multiple myeloma is extremely rare. This paper reports a case of bilateral ovarian involvement in plasma cell myeloma. The patient was a 48-year-old Persian woman who experienced constitutional symptoms, bone pain and flashing for one year.

Asymptomatic pediatric pulmonic valve myxoma involving the right ventricular outflow tract: a case report and review of the literature.

Asymptomatic pediatric pulmonic valve myxoma involving the right ventricular out flow tract (RVOT) is very rare. The case is presented of 13-year-old asymptomatic boy who was referred to the cardiology clinic for evaluation of murmur, and was found to have a large mobile mass (3 x 2 cm) in the RVOT that protruded into the pulmonary artery across the pulmonary valve during systole, and relocated in the right ventricle in diastole. The patient underwent successful surgical excision of the tumor, which had a short stalk attached to the pulmonary valve.

Influenza vaccination in patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis: efficacy and safety.

Background: Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory, granulomatous disorder of unknown etiology. The role of cellular and humoral immune systems in this disease is unclear, whereas dysregulation of the immune system is suggested. Patients with sarcoidosis show diverse responses while exposed to various antigens.

Sodium thiopental and mean arterial pressure during cardiopulmonary bypass.

Sodium thiopental is known to have a number of cardiovascular effects, but injection into the cardiopulmonary bypass reservoir has not been studied. The effect of sodium thiopental on mean arterial blood pressure during cardiopulmonary bypass was assessed in 150 patients undergoing elective coronary artery bypass grafting. Sodium thiopental 3 mg · kg(-1) was administered via the cardiopulmonary bypass reservoir.

Isolated noncompaction of left ventricular myocardium with an unusual presentation of angina pectoris.

A 45-year-old man presented to the hospital with typical chest pain compatible with myocardial infarction. An electrocardiogram showed left bundle branch block. The patient underwent urgent coronary angiography, which revealed no significant coronary artery disease.

Cervical mass following carotid attempt at interventional repair of aortic coarctation: a case report.

A 4-month-old boy was admitted to our hospital following an unsuccessful attempt at interventional repair of aortic coarctation via the right carotid artery, which seemed to have given rise to the formation and growth of a cervical mass overlying the entry site. Despite the initial anticipation of difficulty during intubation due to the pressure effect of the mass, anesthesia progressed uneventfully, the mass, which was a hematoma, was evacuated, and the coarctation was repaired. The patient was discharged after the operation.

Multivalvular heart failure improvement after successful kidney transplantation.

Chronic renal disease is responsible for various cardiac complications. After renal transplantation many of these complications improve. However the extent to which cardiac failure is reversible post transplant is not known.
