Objective: This prospective cohort study aimed to assess the pulmonary embolism (PE) rate and clot burden in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbation.

Material And Methods: A total of 248 patients entered the study, and their clinical probability of PE was assessed using the Geneva score. Patients with high clinical probability underwent computed tomographic pulmonary angiography, while those with low or intermediate probability underwent a d-dimer test.

A case report of aggressive mixed epithelial and stromal tumor of the kidney with malignant transformation.

Mixed epithelial and stromal tumor of the kidney (MESTK) is a rare benign kidney tumor. In rare cases, malignant transformation, such as sarcomatoid features indicates poor clinical outcomes. In this study, we will describe a 45 years old man with a diagnosis of MESTK with malignant transformation of the sarcomatoid component, after right radical nephrectomy.

The effects of pomegranate consumption on blood pressure in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Considering the main component of cardiovascular disease and due to the high prevalence of hypertension, controlling blood pressure is required in individuals with various health conditions. Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) which studied the effects of pomegranate consumption on blood pressure have shown inconsistent findings. As a result, we intended to assess the effects of pomegranate consumption on systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure in adults.

The effects of astaxanthin supplementation on liver enzyme levels.

According to previous studies, astaxanthin exerts various biological effects due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capabilities; however, its effects on liver enzymes have not yet been well elucidated. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to assess astaxanthin's effects on liver enzymes. A systematic literature search was conducted using scientific databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, the Cochrane databases, and Google Scholar up to February 2023 to find relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining the effects of astaxanthin supplementation on alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP).

Evidence supports the potential application of polyphenols as agents against obesity. Pomegranate is one of the fruits that possess a high content of polyphenols. This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) sought to evaluate the effects of pomegranate consumption on obesity indices, including body mass index (BMI), body weight, waist circumference (WC), fat mass (FM), body fat percentage (BFP), and fat-free mass (FFM) in adults.

Lactic acid bacterial fermentation helps reduce the immunoreactivity of soy protein. Nevertheless, the effect of lactic acid bacterial fermentation on a particular soy allergen and the consequent dynamic change of epitopes during gastrointestinal digestion are unclear. In this study, soy glycinin was isolated and an dynamic gastrointestinal model was established to investigate the dynamic change in the immunoreactivity and peptide profile of unfermented (UG) and fermented glycinin (FG) digestates.

Breast Cancer and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia and Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report of a Rare Cancer Combination.

Introduction: The incidence of second malignancies in breast cancer survivors has increased because of early detection and improved cancer treatment modalities. The synchronous occurrence of chronic lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL) and renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in the same patient is higher than in the general population. Several factors, including the history of chemotherapy with alkylating agents, genetic alteration, and long-term survival of breast cancer patients may explain this condition, but further research is needed.

This highlights the need for new and improved antibacterial agents with novel and different mechanisms of action. In this study, by electrospinning process Tanacetum polycephalum essential oil (EO), as a natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent, along with Amoxicillin (AMX) as an antibiotic are incorporated into PVA/gelatin-based nanofiber mats individually and in combination to fabricate a novel wound dressing.

Applications of honeybee-derived products in bone tissue engineering.

Nowadays, there is an increasing prevalence of bone diseases and defects caused by trauma, cancers, infections, and degenerative and inflammatory conditions. The restoration of bone tissue lost due to trauma, fractures, or surgical removal resulting from locally invasive pathologies requires bone regeneration. As an alternative to conventional treatments, sustainable materials based on natural products, such as honeybee-derived products (honey, propolis, royal jelly, bee pollen, beeswax, and bee venom), could be considered.

Aim: To compare the efficacy of Duloxetine and Nortriptyline in alleviating the symptoms of severity, anxiety, depression and quality of life in patients with functional dyspepsia (FD).

Material And Method: We conducted a single-blinded 3-month trial of Duloxetine 20-30 mg daily in 20 patients and Nortriptyline 25 mg daily in 25 FD patients. The primary outcome measure was the severity of FD symptoms by Gastrointestinal symptoms rating scale.

Adsorptive removal of anthracene from water by biochar derived amphiphilic carbon dots decorated with chitosan.

Anthracene belongs to the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) consisting of benzene rings, unusually highly stable through more π-electrons and localized π-bond in entire rings. Aqueous-phase anthracene adsorption using carbon-based materials such as biochar is ineffective. In this paper, carbon dots (CDs) derived from the acid treatment of coconut shell biochar (CDs/MCSB) decorated with chitosan (CS) are successfully synthesized and applied for anthracene removal from aqueous solutions.

Background: Since the establishment of the International Health Promotion Hospitals (HPH) in 2006, standards have been designed to evaluate this network. Based on the request of the General Assembly of HPH, the new standards have been revised in 2020 to be in harmony with the new global strategy of HPH for the years 2021-2025. The present study was conducted to translate the original version of the self-evaluation form of HPH and to determine its validity and reliability in Iranian society.

Empty follicle syndrome is a rare condition characterized by failure to retrieve oocytes despite repeated careful aspiration of mature precursor follicles during controlled ovarian stimulation. This report presents a case of empty follicle syndrome in a patient with polycystic ovary syndrome using a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist as a trigger for final oocyte maturation. No oocytes were retrieved from the right ovary and the procedure was discontinued.

Spatio-temporal analysis of deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning in Iran between 2011 and 2018: An ecological study.

Risk of recurrence at the time of withdrawal of short- or long-term methimazole therapy in patients with Graves' hyperthyroidism: a randomized trial and a risk-scoring model.

Purpose: In Graves' disease, administration of low-dose methimazole for more than 60 months induces higher remission rates compared with the conventional duration of 12-18 months. However, the risk of recurrence and its predictors beyond 48 months of drug withdrawal are not known. The aims of this study were to determine the risk of recurrence during 84 months after withdrawal of short- or long-term methimazole therapy and a risk stratification for recurrence of hyperthyroidism.
