Drug Chem Toxicol

August 2024

Department of Occupational Health and Safety, School of Public Health and Safety, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Science, Tehran, Iran.

Mineral oils, untreated or mildly treated, have been classified in group 1 as a potential source of cancer by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Although numerous studies have implicated metalworking fluids (MWFs) as human carcinogens, toxicology data regarding the mechanism of carcinogenicity are limited. This study is intended to examine the systemic effects of machining workers' exposure to MWFs.

Unlabelled: Homozygous variants of Calcium Voltage-Gated Channel Subunit Alpha1 S (CACNA1S) gene mutation were previously identified as causes of periodic paralysis and congenital early-onset myopathy, while it could be manifested as a late-onset congenital core myopathy.

Abstract: Calcium Voltage-Gated Channel Subunit Alpha1 S (CACNA1S) gene mutation has been linked to various neuromuscular conditions in recent years. Congenital myopathy with core-like features is one of the cardinal associations reported previously, causing severe respiratory insufficiency and death in neonates.

Article Synopsis
  • Glioma is a common type of brain tumor, and a specific mutation can indicate a better chance of recovery.
  • The study used machine learning to analyze data from 22 studies involving over 5,000 patients to see how well it could predict the mutation.
  • Results showed that machine learning is quite accurate in predicting the mutation status, but more work is needed to make it even better for doctors to use in treating patients.

Key Clinical Message: Despite being rare, we have presented a case of osteonecrosis of acetabulum that followed total hip arthroplasty. It's crucial to act appropriately, as it emulates periprosthetic joint infection. The key point is that the osteonecrosis of acetabulum may necessitate revision and can be classified as aseptic loosening.

This systematic review evaluates clinical studies investigating regenerative endodontic procedures for mature/immature teeth utilizing stem cell transplantation. An electronic search of Scopus, PubMed, ISI Web Science, and Google Scholar was conducted up to January 2023. Outcome measures encompassed radiographic (periapical lesion, root length, apical foramen width, volume of the regenerated pulp) and clinical (post-operative pain, sensibility test) parameters.

Article Synopsis
  • Meniere's disease is an inner ear disorder that requires accurate diagnosis, but current testing with the ECochG test lacks sensitivity, prompting the inclusion of complementary tests like the SVV test.
  • A study involving 53 patients looked at using the SVV test in both static and dynamic modes along with the ECochG test to better identify Meniere's disease and assess its effectiveness.
  • The results indicated that the SVV test has a cutoff point of 2.1 degrees with moderate sensitivity and specificity, suggesting that it should not be solely relied upon for diagnosis and that further testing is necessary.

Drug resistance has become a matter of great concern, with many bacteria now resist multiple antibiotics. This study depicts the occurrence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and resistance patterns in five full-scale hospital wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Samples of raw influent wastewater, as well as pre- and post-disinfected effluents, were monitored for targeted ARB and resistance genes in September 2022 and February 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • This pilot study aimed to evaluate how effective and safe the treatment of 177Lu-PSMA-617 is when combined with radical prostatectomy and bilateral orchiectomy in men with castrate-sensitive metastatic prostate cancer.
  • A total of 12 male patients participated, with the primary goal being to measure how many experienced a significant reduction (≥ 50%) in PSA levels after treatment, alongside monitoring any increase in pain.
  • Results showed that 75% of patients saw reduced PSA levels after the first treatment, with manageable side effects like mouth dryness and fatigue, suggesting this treatment approach could be beneficial, but more research is necessary to validate these outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent studies have questioned the previous guidelines that maintained normothermia after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children, suggesting therapeutic hypothermia might be beneficial despite concerns about increased mortality.
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of eight studies indicated no significant differences in mortality or various clinical outcomes between hypothermic and non-hypothermic pediatric TBI patients, although a notable decrease in heart rate was observed in the hypothermic group.
  • The results suggest that therapeutic hypothermia may not be effective in improving clinical outcomes for pediatric TBI, calling for a re-evaluation of its current recommended use.

Job-related burnout is one health outcome in nurses working in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) due to the heavy workload, which results in negative physical and psychological consequences. One newly introduced approach to improve coping is loving-kindness meditation (LKM). Some studies have shown the effectiveness of the LKM on the mental health of nurses, though more evidence is required to support them.

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the incidence of distal radius fractures in patients aged 55 and above who had also experienced hip fractures. Osteoporosis-associated fractures, particularly hip fractures, are common and serious in older individuals with reduced bone density. Previous research has suggested a relationship between hip fractures and distal radius fractures.

Asthma is an airways inflammatory disease and the most common chronic disease of childhood, which causes most hospital visits and placing a heavy financial burden on families and communities. Interleukins 4, 5 and 13, play a central role in the pathogenesis of asthma. Given the importance of oral hygiene in asthmatic patients and IL-4 and 5 are involved in the inflammatory process of periodontitis, the effect of chlorhexidine as mouthwash on asthma attacks in children on serum cytokines is necessary.

Human-derived Tumor-On-Chip model to study the heterogeneity of breast cancer tissue.

Biomater Adv

September 2024

Stanford Cardiovascular Institute, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, CA 94305, USA; Department of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, CA 94305, USA. Electronic address:

One of the leading causes that complicate the treatment of some malignancies, including breast cancer, is tumor heterogeneity. In addition to inter-heterogeneity and intra-heterogeneity of tumors that reflect the differences between cancer cell characteristics, heterogeneity in the tumor microenvironment plays a critical role in tumor progression and could be considered an overlooked and a proper target for the effective selection of therapeutic approaches. Due to the difficulty of completely capturing tumor heterogeneity in conventional detection methods, Tumor-on-Chip (TOC) devices with culturing patient-derived spheroids could be an appropriate alternative.

Introduction: Acute stress, as a protective mechanism to respond to an aversive stimulus, can often be accompanied by suppressing pain perception via promoting consistent burst firing of dopamine neurons. Besides, sensitive and advanced research techniques led to the recognition of the mesohippocampal dopaminergic terminals, particularly in the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG). Moreover, previous studies have shown that dopamine receptors within the hippocampal DG play a critical role in induced antinociceptive responses by forced swim stress (FSS) in the presence of inflammatory pain.
