Background: MiR-34a and miR-126 mainly act as tumor suppressors and are often downregulated in various cancers, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We aimed to determine the methylation status of miR-34a and miR-126 in NSCLC patients.
Methods: The current study included 63 paraffin-embedded NSCLC and paired adjacent normal tissues.

Neuronal cell death as a prominent pathological feature contributes to cognitive decline and memory loss in Alzheimer's disease. We investigated the role of two forms of cell death pathways, ferroptosis and necroptosis, and their interactions following entorhinal cortex (EC) amyloidopathy. The Aβ was bilaterally injected into the rat's EC, and Morris Water Maze was applied to determine spatial performance one week after Aβ injection.

An immobilization stress (IS) of 1 h applied at the beginning of the dark phase is followed by a sleep rebound. During the restraint, serotonin released by the dorsal raphe nucleus within the arcuate area stimulates the availability of corticotropin-like intermediate lobe peptide (CLIP or ACTH18-39). Three hours after the restraint, CLIP, through its hypnogenic properties, contributes to the sleep rebound that follows the IS.

Objective: Stress is known to be an inhibitor of the reproductive hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. However, the neural and molecular connections between stress and reproduction are not yet understood. It is well established that in both humans and rodents, kisspeptin (encoded by the kiss1 gene) is a strong stimulator of the HPG axis.

Low doses of ionizing radiation may induce an adaptive mechanism which protects embryonic stem cells against higher doses, a phenomenon which was reported previously for somatic cells. In this study, a possible adaptive response (AR) was evaluated by measuring cell survival (MTT assay) and chromosomal aberrations (micronucleus assay). Thymidine-synchronized mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) were exposed to 2.

This case illustrates the treatment of a 12-year-old boy with an open bite, a slight Class II jaw relationship, Class I molar relationship, and a steep lower occlusal plane. The patient needed a surgical procedure due to the severity of openbite; however the surgery option was rejected. Therefore, he was treated by a Hyrax, fixed tongue appliance, posterior bite plate, reverse chin cup and fixed orthodontics.

The amyloid β (Aβ) protein is believed to be the key pathological mediator of Alzheimer's disease (AD) which is the first and most well known type of dementia. Despite a growing body of evidence indicating that Aβ neurotoxicity induces changes in synaptic function, little effort, if any, has been made to investigate the effect of in vivo Aβ treatment on intrinsic neuronal properties. The present study was designed to examine the effects that in vivo Aβ treatment have on the intrinsic repetitive firing properties of CA1 pyramidal neurons, using whole cell patch clamp recording.

Morbidity and mortality due to infections remain serious problems in pediatric oncology patients receiving chemotherapy. Association of mannose-binding lectin (MBL) levels with an increased risk for infection in previous studies was contradictory. The aim of this study was to determine whether MBL deficiency is associated with the risk of infections in pediatric oncology patients.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to find concrete clinical evidence for determination of the best method of treatment for trichiasis and the location that responds best to treatment with radiofrequency and argon laser.
Methods: This study was performed in 2007 and 2008 on 100 patients, involving a total of 1,181 lashes in contact with the globe. Patients were randomly assigned to 2 groups of treatment: the radiofrequency group (group 1; 2 watts, 2- to 3-mm depth, cut-coagulating mode) and the argon laser group (group 2; spot size 50 μm, 760 mW, 930-nm wavelengths, continuous).

Electrophysiological dysfunction of Purkinje cells causes cerebellar ataxia. Recent studies indicated that 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) can prevent the attacks in patients with episodic ataxia type 2. However, the cellular mechanism(s) by which 4-AP might be beneficial for the improvement of motor function remain unclear.

Purpose: To asses the functional results and complications of Mersilene mesh as an alternative to autogenous fascia lata in the management of low function ptosis.
Methods: In a randomized clinical trial, 31 eyelids with poor levator function were operated on. In 16 eyelids Mersilene mesh (Group A) and in 15 eyelids autogenous fascia lata were used for frontalis suspension procedure (Group B).

Despite major advances in pain management, cancer pain is managed poorly in 80% of the patients with cancer. Due to deleterious side effects of pharmacology therapy in these people, there is an urgent need for clinical trials of non-pharmacological interventions. To examine the effect of therapeutic touch (TT) on the pain and fatigue of the cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, a randomized and three-groups experimental study-experimental (TT), placebo (placebo TT), and control (usual care)-was carried out.

Under congenital thyroid hypofunction, the oro-facial large and small calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) immunoreactive motoneurons were classified into strong, moderate, weak and negative intensity in offspring weaned rats. While 50% of neurons in the trigeminal motor nucleus (Mo5) were of the large type, this value dropped to 30% in hypothyroid pups. Hypothyroid trigeminal accessory nucleus (Mo5-AC) contained 10% large motoneurons versus about 45% in normal pups.
