Two-step sequential management for hip arthroplasty after hip joint gunshot injury: A case report.

Combined fractures of the femoral head and acetabulum due to hip gunshot injuries (GSI) are rare, and there is no preferred treatment option. We present a 35-year-old male patient who sustained a right hip GSI. Delayed THA with a two-step sequential approach is a feasible management in this situation to manage soft tissue and decrease infection rate.

Genotyping and In Vitro Antifungal Susceptibility Profile of Neoscytalidium Species Isolates from Respiratory Tract.

The fungus genus Neoscytalidium is mainly distributed in (sub) tropical regions of the world and has been essentially considered as a phytopathogen. There are however several reports of human infection caused by Neoscytalidium spp. through direct or indirect contact with contaminated plants or soil.

Galactomannan detection in bronchoalveolar lavage fluids: A diagnostic approach for fungus ball in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis?

Background: Several previous studies have shown cavitary lung lesions in old pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) increase the risk of fungus ball. Detection of galactomannan (GM) in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is also proposed as a diagnostic approach for the fungus ball.

Objectives: We evaluated the diagnosis of fungus balls and GM levels in BAL samples in PTB patients.

Interictal electrocardiographic alternations in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy.

Purpose: Previous studies suggested the possible role of autonomic dysfunction in sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). The aim of this study is to assess the interictal ECG alternations especially heart rate variability (HRV), as a marker of autonomic dysfunction, in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy and determine the effect of epilepsy type and duration, seizure frequency and anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) on ECG findings.

Methods: In this comparative cross-sectional study, the interictal ECG parameters of 64 consecutive patients with drug-resistant epilepsy and the same number of age and sex-matched controls were analyzed.

COMPARE CPM-RMI Trial: Intramyocardial Transplantation of Autologous Bone Marrow-Derived CD133+ Cells and MNCs during CABG in Patients with Recent MI: A Phase II/III, Multicenter, Placebo-Controlled, Randomized, Double-Blind Clinical Trial.

Objectives: The regenerative potential of bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (MNCs) and CD133+ stem cells in the heart varies in terms of their pro-angiogenic effects. This phase II/III, multicenter and double-blind trial is designed to compare the functional effects of intramyocardial autologous transplantation of both cell types and placebo in patients with recent myocardial infarction (RMI) post-coronary artery bypass graft.

Materials And Methods: This was a phase II/III, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial COMPARE CPM-RMI (CD133, Placebo, MNCs - recent myocardial infarction) conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki that assessed the safety and efficacy of CD133 and MNCs compared to placebo in patients with RMI.

Background: Heavy menstrual bleeding of endometrial origin (HMB) is a major healthcare problem in premenopausal women and affects several aspects of women's health and quality of life (QoL). The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of Persian Golnar (PG) and tranexamic acid (TA) on heavy menstrual bleeding of endometrial origin (HMB) and patients' QoL.

Methods: A double-blind randomized controlled trial with parallel design and block randomization technique was conducted.

Women with preeclampsia, independent of obesity and glucose intolerance, exhibit insulin resistance during pregnancy. The purpose of the present study is to determine whether early diagnosis of insulin resistance during pregnancy can predict preeclampsia. Through a case-control study, 675 pregnant women were selected and their first trimester blood was taken.

Cutaneous alternariosis infection occurs mainly in immunocompromised individuals. The incidence of alternariosis in a heart transplant recipient is infrequent. Coincidence of the aforementioned infection with additional fugal agents is rare.

Air pollution and low birth weight: a historical cohort study from Tehran.

This historical cohort study was designed to clarify the association between air pollution and low birth weight (LBW) amongst women referred to Tehran hospitals in 2007. In total, 225 eligible pregnant women who lived within 5 km of an air pollution monitoring station during their pregnancy were selected for the study. Data were collected via interview and hospital records.

Epitheliod leiomyoma of the bladder: an unusual case of irritative and obstructive voiding symptoms.

Epitheloid leiomyoma is a very rare subtype of benign mesothelial tumors of the bladder. A 46-year-old female patient presented to our hospital with prolonged dysuria, frequency, and recurrent urinary tract infections. Bimanual examination revealed a mobile, round mass in bladder.

Comparison of serum and bronchoalveolar lavage galactomannan in diagnosing invasive aspergillosis in solid-organ transplant recipients.

Objectives: This study sought to compare the sensitivities of serum galactomannan and bronchoalveolar lavage galactomannan in diagnosing invasive aspergillosis in solid-organ transplant recipients (lung and heart).

Materials And Methods: This study took place in the lung transplant center of the National Research Institute for Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. All patients with clinical and radiologic manifestations suggestive of pulmonary infection were included.

Outcome of renal transplantation in children: a multi-center national report from Iran.

The outcome of pediatric renal transplantation was previously reported by a single-center study at the year 2006. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate and report the characteristics and outcome of renal pediatric renal transplantation in a multi-center nationwide study. In this nationwide report, medical records of 907 children (≤18yr) with renal transplantation in eight major pediatric transplant centers of Iran were recorded.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the trachea.

This report described a 2-year-old boy who presented with severe respiratory distress and stridor. Bronchoscopy and CT revealed a mass in the left anterolateral tracheal wall and histopathology showed a tracheal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. Initial removal by rigid bronchoscopy resulted in prompt recurrence of the tumor.

Impact of extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis on treatment outcome of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis patients with standardized regimen: report from Iran.

The limited experience in treating patients with extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) shows a therapeutic success rate under 50-60% and there are no publications regarding the outcome of these patients treated with standardized regimens. All multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients hospitalized at the Masih Daneshvari Hospital in Tehran, Iran, during 2004-2007 were recruited. Drug susceptibility testing to 14 drugs (including eight second-line drugs) was performed and a standardized regimen with ofloxacin, cycloserine, prothionamide, and amikacin was administered for all patients.

An in vitro evaluation of various Rosa damascena flower extracts as a natural antisolar agent.

The aim of this work was to evaluate ultraviolet (UV) absorption ability of various extracts of Rosa damascena flowers as an antisolar agent. Extracts were prepared using the following solvent mixtures: water:ethanol (50 : 50), ethyl acetate:ethanol (80 : 20) and ether. The hydroalcoholic and ethyl acetate:ethanol extracts were prepared by maceration, and ether extract was prepared by soxhletion.

Postintubation multisegmental tracheal stenosis: treatment and results.

Background: A number of postintubation tracheal stenoses involve different and separate segments. Treatment of these types of strictures is complicated with obscure results, infrequently reported in literature.

Effects of two types of low-level laser wave lengths (850 and 630 nm) on the orthodontic tooth movements in rabbits.

The effects of low-level lasers on bone cellular activity, bone structures, bone healing, fibroblasts activity and inflammation process have already been investigated. Considering orthodontic tooth movement, which is a complicated inflammatory process involving simultaneous bone apposition and resorption, the aim of this controlled study is to investigate the quantitative effects of a pulsed 850 nm laser (Optodan) and a continuous 630 nm laser (KLO3) on the orthodontic tooth movement in rabbits.
