Three novel mutations in Iranian patients with Tay-Sachs disease.

Background: Tay-Sachs disease (TSD), or GM2 gangliosidosis, is a lethal autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder, which is caused by a deficiency of beta-hexosaminidase A (HEXA), resulting in lysosomal accumulation of GM2 ganglioside. The aim of this study was to identify the TSD-causing mutations in an Iranian population.

Methods: In this study, we examined 31 patients for TSD-causing mutations using PCR, followed by restriction enzyme digestion.

Microbial mediated preparation, characterization and optimization of gold nanoparticles.

The need for eco-friendly and cost effective methods for nanoparticles synthesis is developing interest in biological approaches which are free from the use of toxic chemicals as byproducts. This study aimed to biosynthesize and optimize the size of gold nanoparticles which produced by biotechnological method using Penicillium crustosum isolated from soil. Initially, Penicillium crustosum was grown in fluid czapek dox broth on shaker at 28 °C and 200 rpm for ten days and then the supernatant was separated from the mycelia to convert AuCl₄ solution into gold nanoparticles.

Body dysmorphic disorder in aesthetic rhinoplasty candidates.

Objective: Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a psychiatric disorder defined as obsessive ideas about distorted physical appearance, leading to social, professional and personal dysfunction. Many of these patients seek aesthetic surgery and are generally dissatisfied with the outcome of their surgery. In the present study patients coming to the otolaryngology clinic of Thaleghani Hospital in Tehran seeking rhinoplasty were evaluated.

Impact of ureteral length on urological complications and patient survival after kidney transplantation.

Background: Urologic complications are of the most important complications after kidney transplantation which increases mortality and morbidity significantly.

Objectives: We designed this study to evaluate the association between ureteral length and postoperative complications.

Patients And Methods: We recorded the length of the transplanted ureter during the operation.

Characterization of κ-carrageenan films incorporated plant essential oils with improved antimicrobial activity.

Antioxidant and antimicrobial kappa-carrageenan-based films containing different concentrations of Zataria multiflora Boiss (ZEO) and Mentha pulegium (MEO) essential oils were developed, and their water vapor permeability (WVP), optical, microstructure, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties were characterized. ZEO and MEO decreased the WVP of the emulsified films; for example, 3% ZEO reduced WVP by around 80%. Increasing the content of ZEO or MEO from 1% to 3% (v/v) increased values for elongation at break from 37.

The influence of lipid composition and surface charge on biodistribution of intact liposomes releasing from hydrogel-embedded vesicles.

Mixed drug delivery systems possess advantages over discrete systems, and can be used as a strategy to design more effective formulations. They are more valuable if the embedded particles perform well, rather than using drugs that have been affected by the surrounding vehicle. In order to address this concept, different liposomes have been incorporated into hydrogel to evaluate the potential effect on the controlled release of liposomes.

Estimation of esophageal cancer incidence in Tehran by log- linear method using population-based cancer registry data.

Background: Having knowledge or estimation of cancer incidence is necessary for planning and implementation of any cancer prevention and control programs. Population-based registries provide valuable information to achieve these objectives but require extra techniques to estimate the incidence rate. The present study aimed to estimate the esophageal cancer incidence using a log-linear method based on Tehran population-based cancer registry data.

First Iranian imported case of dengue.

Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne flavivirus infection, is endemic in Southeast Asia. Currently, incidences have been increasing among adults. There have been no published reports of dengue fever from Iran.

Comparison between Face and Object Processing in Youths with Autism Spectrum Disorder: An event related potentials study.

Objective: Incapability in face perception and recognition is one of the main issues in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Event related potential (ERP) studies have revealed controversial insights on autistic brain responses to faces and objects. The current investigation examined the ERP components of young children with ASD compared to a typically developing (TD) group when looking at the upright and inverted images of faces and cars.

Close contact precautions could prevent an outbreak of crimean-congo hemorrhagic Fever: a case series report from southern part of tehran.

Between the end of June and the middle of July 2011, an outbreak of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever occurred in southern part of Tehran, Iran. This study reports clinical, laboratory findings and outcome of six cases, who were all consanguine. Index case who was livestock-worker died with hemorrhagic manifestations; thereafter his pregnant wife, three brothers, mother-in-law and his pregnant sister-in-law were admitted and except for the latter, ribavirin was administered.

Cervical cancer incidence trends in Canada: a 30-year population-based analysis.

Objectives: To use the most recent data to update the trend in cervical cancer incidence in Canada over the 30 year period from 1978 to 2009.

Methods: Registered cases of cervical cancer and the corresponding person years for the Canadian population were retrieved from an online data repository of the International Agency on Research on Cancer and from Statistics Canada for the period 1978 to 2009. Annual age-standardized rates were estimated for all data combined and for each province separately.

Management of thyroid peroxidase antibody euthyroid women in pregnancy: comparison of the american thyroid association and the endocrine society guidelines.

The presence of thyroid autoantibodies is relatively high in women of childbearing age. There is evidence that positive thyroperoxidase antibody even in euthyroid women may increase the risk of spontaneous and recurrent pregnancy loss and preterm delivery. However, the evidence is not enough to justify recommendation on the screening of pregnant women for thyroid autoantibodies or LT4 supplementation for reducing maternal or fetal complications.

The effect of oral evening primrose oil on menopausal hot flashes: a randomized clinical trial.

Purpose: Hot flashes are common experience for menopausal women, and for many, are severe enough to significantly compromise their overall sense of well being and quality of life. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of evening primrose with placebo in improvement of menopausal hot flashes.

Methods: In a 6-week randomized clinical trial, a total of 56 menopausal women aged 45-59 years were participated in this study.

Determinants of stunting in school-aged children of tehran, iran.

Background: Limited data are available indicating associates of stunting among Iranian children. This study was conducted to investigate determinants of stunting in first grade primary school children of Tehran in 2007.

Method: In this case-control study, 3147 school children were selected by multistage cluster random sampling method from 5 districts of Tehran.

Cutaneous alternariosis with trichosporon infection in a heart transplant recipient: a case report.

Cutaneous alternariosis infection occurs mainly in immunocompromised individuals. The incidence of alternariosis in a heart transplant recipient is infrequent. Coincidence of the aforementioned infection with additional fugal agents is rare.

A brief history of plastic surgery in Iran.

 Although the exact time of performing plastic surgery is not addressed in the medical and historical literature, it can be supposed that these surgical procedures have a long and fascinating history.  Recent excavations provided many documents regarding the application of medical instruments, surgical and even reconstructive procedures during the pre-historic and ancient periods. Actually, there is no historical definite time-zone separating general and cosmetic operations in the pre-modern time; however, historically there have been many surgeons who tried to perform reconstructive procedures during their usual medical practice.

Assessing rheumatologists and radiologists agreement rate regarding the diagnosis of focal bone erosions and osteopenic changes using hand X-rays radiography in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

In rheumatoid arthritis, diagnosis of bone erosions and osteopenic changes in earlier stages is extremely important to the initiation of specific and more aggressive treatment to subsidize the disease, decrease morbidities, and increase patients' quality of life. In the present study, we assessed consensus rate of rheumatologists and radiologists regarding the detection of radiographic changes of hand in rheumatoid arthritis. Ninety-six adult patients with documented rheumatoid arthritis referring to our outpatient rheumatology clinic during March 2009-2010, enrolled into this cross-sectional study.

Gigantism treated by pure endoscopic endonasal approach in a case of McCune-Albright syndrome with sphenoid fibrous dysplasia: a case report.

McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) is an uncommon polyostotic manifestation of fibrous dysplasia in association with at least one endocrinopathy that is mostly associated with precocious puberty and hyperpigmented skin macules named café-au-lait spots. We present an atypical manifestation of McCune-Albright syndrome in a 19-year-old man with the uncommon association of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia and gigantism in the absence of café-au-lait spots and precocious puberty. He presented with a height increase to 202 cm in the previous 3 years, which had become more progressive in the few months prior.

Isolated dissection of superior mesenteric artery.

Isolated dissection of the superior mesenteric artery is a rare occurrence with a hitherto unknown exact etiology. Patients may present with abdominal symptoms or hemodynamic instability.We herein present a case of spontaneous isolated superior mesenteric artery dissection in a 48-year-old man, who was admitted with epigastric pain.

Metabolic syndrome and colorectal cancer: a cross-sectional survey.

Introduction: There is epidemiological evidence indicating that the metabolic syndrome increases the risk of colorectal cancer. Since there is little information about this issue in Iran, the present study was conducted to evaluate prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its components in patients with colorectal cancer.

Material And Methods: This cross-sectional survey involved 200 patients with a new diagnosis of colorectal cancer.
