The Function of FoxK Transcription Factors in Diseases.

Front Physiol

July 2022

Department of Pathology, Xijing Hospital, Fourth Military Medical University, Xi'an, China.

Forkhead box (FOX) transcription factors play a crucial role in the regulation of many diseases, being an evolutionarily conserved superfamily of transcription factors. In recent years, FoxK1/2, members of its family, has been the subject of research. Even though FoxK1 and FoxK2 have some functional overlap, increasing evidence indicates that the regulatory functions of FoxK1 and FoxK2 are not the same in various physiological and disease states.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), an emerging global health problem affecting 25-30% of the total population, refers to excessive lipid accumulation in the liver accompanied by insulin resistance (IR) without significant alcohol intake. The increasing prevalence of NAFLD will lead to an increasing number of cirrhosis patients, as well as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) requiring liver transplantation, while the current treatments for NAFLD and its advanced diseases are suboptimal. Accordingly, it is necessary to find signaling pathways and targets related to the pathogenesis of NAFLD for the development of novel drugs.

Key laboratory of Shaanxi Province for Craniofacial Precision Medicine Research, College of Stomatology, Xi'an Jiaotong University, 98West 5th Road, Xi'an, Shaanxi 710004, China.

Recently, increasing attention has been paid to the role of Squalene epoxidase (SQLE) in several types of cancers. However, its functional role in tumor progression of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is still unclear. We performed bioinformatic analyses and relative experiments to assess the potential mechanism of SQLE-mediated HNSCC malignancy.

Delirium is a common postoperative complication in elderly hip fracture patients that seriously affects patients' lives and health, and early delirium risk prediction, and targeted measures can significantly reduce the incidence of delirium. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a nomogram for the prediction of postoperative delirium (POD) in elderly hip fracture patients. A total of 328 elderly patients with hip fractures enrolled retrospectively in department 1 of our hospital were randomly divided into the training set ( = 230) and the internal validation set ( = 98).

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating type of neurological disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) with high mortality and disability. The pathological processes of SCI can usually be described as two stages, namely, primary and acute secondary injuries. Secondary injury produces more significant exacerbations of the initial injury.

Purpose: The optimal surgical approach for early-stage rectal cancer remains controversial. Radical resection is considered to be the gold standard for rectal cancer treatment. More and more studies show that local resection can replace traditional radical resection in the treatment of early rectal cancer.

Department of Pain Treatment, Tangdu Hospital, Air Force Military Medical University, Xi'an 710032, China; Department of Intervention Therapy, The Second Affiliated Hospital, Shaanxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Xianyang 712046, China. Electronic address:

During tumor initiation and progression, the complicated role of immune cells in the tumor immune microenvironment remains a concern. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are a group of immune cells that originate from the bone marrow and have immunosuppressive potency in various diseases, including cancer. In recent years, the key role of cancer stemness has received increasing attention in cancer development and therapy.

Background: Large individual differences exist in sleep deprivation (SD) induced sustained attention deterioration. Several brain imaging studies have suggested that the activities within frontal-parietal network, cortico-thalamic connections, and inter-hemispheric connectivity might underlie the neural correlates of vulnerability/resistance to SD. However, those traditional approaches are based on average estimates of differences at the group level.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to investigate the effects of Edgeworthia gardneri flower (EWM) on glucose and lipid metabolism in KKAy mice, alongside the underlying mechanisms using transcriptome analysis.
  • KKAy mice were subjected to a high-sugar and high-fat diet, and after 5 weeks of EWM administration, various serum lipid levels and liver tissue expressions were analyzed.
  • Results indicated that EWM reduced several harmful lipid levels while increasing beneficial ones, influenced key metabolic pathways, and altered the expression of important genes related to lipid metabolism in the liver.

Department of Radiation Oncology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, 710061, Shaanxi, PR China; Department of Endocrinology, Shaanxi Kang Fu Hospital, Xi'an, 710065, Shaanxi, PR China. Electronic address:

Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is an undifferentiated subtype of thyroid cancer with a markedly poor survival prognosis, estimated to occur 3-5 months after diagnosis. Akt activation is reportedly involved in tumorigenesis during ATC and represents a new therapeutic target. Based on the Akt1/bisubstrate complex structure and artificial intelligence-assisted peptide drug screening, we designed a self-assemble Akt1-targeting peptide drug exhibiting a 0.

Objective: In order to provide reference for clinicians and bring convenience to clinical work, we seeked to develop and validate a risk prediction model for lymph node metastasis (LNM) of Ewing's sarcoma (ES) based on machine learning (ML) algorithms.

Methods: Clinicopathological data of 923 ES patients from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and 51 ES patients from multi-center external validation set were retrospectively collected. We applied ML algorithms to establish a risk prediction model.

Shaanxi Natural Carbohydrate Resource Engineering Research Center, College of Food Science and Technology, Northwest University, Xi'an 710069, China.

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are the second most abundant carbohydrates in colostrum. In this study, we performed a quantitative analysis of 13 oligosaccharides in 99 colostrum samples obtained from mothers living in Northwest China. The analysis combined liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) with 2-amino--(2-aminoethyl)benzamide (AEAB) labeling and nonsecretors accounted for 17%.
