Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between the NHHR (non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) among middle-aged and older adults in China.
  • Over a seven-year period, 1,139 participants developed CVD, with significant increases in risk correlating with higher NHHR ratios—98% for overall CVD, 48% for stroke, and 115% for heart issues.
  • The findings suggest that higher NHHR is a key risk factor for CVD, particularly in those under 60 and with hypertension, highlighting the importance of early intervention.

Article Synopsis
  • Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading global cause of death, and low physical activity (LPA) is identified as a major risk factor, with its prevalence remaining concerningly high.
  • Between 1990 and 2021, deaths from CVD related to LPA increased significantly, particularly in Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, while low-income regions saw a steady rise in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and years of life lost (YLLs).
  • Urgent interventions are needed, especially in low- and middle-income countries, to tackle the growing health risks associated with LPA and improve public health outcomes.

Objective: This study explores the global disease burden associated with high Body Mass Index (BMI) from 1990 to 2021, using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 (GBD 2021).

Methods: We applied Joinpoint regression to assess trends in deaths and Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) and employed ARIMA models to project future BMI-related burdens.

Results: From 1990 to 2021, global deaths linked to high BMI surged by 153.

Recent guidelines highlight the importance of using collaborative multidisciplinary teams in order to improve outcomes during management of patients with AF. A nurse-led program including a nurse-directed education, counselling and intervention has shown to improve patients' outcomes in candidates with AF.
