Apoptosis is a genetically programmed form of cell death that is substantially conserved across the evolutionary tree. Apoptotic cell elimination includes recognition, phagocytosis, and degradation. Failure to clear apoptotic cells can ultimately cause a series of human diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, Alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis, and cancer.

is a member of the Asparagaceae family whose medicinal part is the dried root tuber. The distribution of and its secondary metabolites are closely associated with environmental factors, such as climate and soil properties. By establishing and optimizing a maximum entropy model, we analyzed and predicted the distribution pattern and migration direction of suitable habitats for and determined the main environmental factors affecting the accumulation of secondary metabolites.

Article Synopsis
  • Understory bird communities, particularly insectivores, are significantly affected by forest loss and fragmentation, yet there is limited understanding of their diversity patterns in Eastern Asia.
  • This study focused on identifying the distribution patterns and diversity of understory Passeriformes birds in southern China, analyzing factors such as geographic distance and climate data.
  • The research identified three geographical groups of birds and found that geographic distance, mean temperature, and temperature range were key factors influencing their diversity distribution patterns across different regions.

A new genus of malachiine Melyridae, , is described based on several male-specific characters, along with description of its type species, , from China. A new combination, (Champion, 1921), , is proposed after examining the type specimen; this species is newly recorded from China. A key to the genera of Chinese Apalochrini is provided for the first time.

Several closely related Myb-like activator proteins are known to have partially redundant functions within the plant circadian clock, but their specific roles are not well understood. To clarify the function of the , , and transcriptional activators, we characterized the growth and clock phenotypes of CRISPR-Cas9-generated single, double, and triple mutants. We found that these genes act synergistically to regulate flowering time, redundantly to regulate leaf growth, and antagonistically to regulate hypocotyl elongation.

Most orthopteran insects are phytophagous and some are important pests in agriculture and forests. Many intestinal microflora of Orthoptera insects have been reported, primarily from Acridoidea and there have been few reports of other taxa. In this study, we collected 15 individuals representing five species (, , , and ) belonging to five orthopteran superfamilies (Tettigonioidea, Tetrigoidea, Eumastacoidea, Gryllotalpoidea and Grylloidea) to characterise and compare the gut microbiota with greater taxonomic width by performing sequencing analysis of the 16S rRNA V4 region in gut material.

Aim: As invasive plants are often in a non-equilibrium expansion state, traditional species distribution models (SDMs) are likely underestimating their suitable habitat. New methods are necessary to identify potential invasion risk areas.

Location: Tropical monsoon rainforest and subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest regions in China.

Nervonic acid (NA) is a kind of ultra-long-chain monounsaturated fatty acid, which can repair nerve cell damage caused by oxidative stress. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a nervous system disease and often accompanied by the decline of learning and memory capacity. In this study, the combined dose of D-galactose/AlCl was used to establish a mouse model of AD.

The genus belongs to Motacillidae (Passeriformes), where mitochondrial features are poorly understood and phylogeny is controversial. Whole mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) data and large taxon sampling are considered to be ideal strategies to obtain this information. We generated four complete mitogenomes of , , and , and made comparative analyses of species combined with mitogenome data from GenBank, and then reconstructed phylogenetic trees based on 37 mitochondrial genes.

After extensive sampling of specimens from species found in China, we examined the intraspecific morphological variation of several characters used for species delimitation in two closely related cricket genera, Saussure, 1877 and Gorochov, 1983. We found that the characters (male genitalia in Xie & Zheng, 2003 and (Saussure, 1877), and coloration of the hind leg in (Chopard, 1959)) exhibit considerable amounts of variation within species, and are thus not reliable characters for species differentiation. Therefore, we revised the taxonomy of these two genera.

In macroecology, the concept of r- and K-strategy has been widely applied, yet, there have been limited studies on microbial life-history strategies in temperate grasslands using multiple sequencing approaches. Total phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis, high-throughput meta-genomic sequencing, and GeoChip technologies were used to examine the changes in microbial life-history traits in a chronosequence of restored grasslands (1, 5, 10, 15, 25, and 30 years since restoration). Grassland restoration increased the relative abundances of Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes but reduced the relative abundances of Acidobacteria, Planctomycetes, and Chloroflexi.

Nonadaptive molecular evolution of plastome during the speciation of and its relatives.

We have seen an explosive increase of plant plastid genome (plastome) sequences in the last decade, and the view that sequence variation in plastomes is maintained by the mutation-drift balance has been challenged by new evidence. Although comparative genomic and population-level studies provided us with evidence for positive evolution of plastid genes at both the macro- and micro-evolution levels, less studies have systematically investigated how plastomes have evolved during the speciation process. We here sequenced 13 plastomes of (P.

Plasmonic nanocavity is widely used for enhancing light-matter interaction. Here, an efficient plasmonic nanocavity of the cube-plate system is constructed for the fluorescence enhancement of rice-like CdSe/CdS nanorods (NRs) with tunable emission wavelength. Over ten thousand times fluorescence enhancement is achieved with the assistance of the plasmonic nanocavity.

In many insect taxa, there is a well-established trade-off between flight capability and reproduction. The wing types of Acridoidea exhibit extremely variability from full length to complete loss in many groups, thus, provide a good model for studying the trade-off between flight and reproduction. In this study, we completed the sampling of 63 Acridoidea species, measured the body length, wing length, body weight, flight muscle weight, testis and ovary weight, and the relative wing length (RWL), relative flight muscle weight (RFW), and gonadosomatic index (GSI) of different species were statistically analyzed.

Negative effects of long-term overgrazing have been seriously, grasslands temporal stability is an important ecological concern we need to research. Here, we performed a 12-year-long (2007-2018) two-factor controlled experiment on meadow on the Tibetan Plateau. The manipulations included three clipping levels (no clipping, NC; moderate clipping, MC; heavy clipping, HC) and two fertilization levels (no fertilization, NF; fertilization, F).

At the time when this paper was written, quarantine-related strategies (from full lockdown to some relaxed preventive measures) were the only available measure to control coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic. However, long-term quarantine and especially full lockdown is an extremely expensive measure. To explore the possibility of controlling and suppressing the COVID-19 epidemic at the lowest possible cost, we apply optimal control theory.

Background A vegetarian diet (VD) may reduce future cardiovascular risk in patients with ischemic heart disease. Methods and Results A randomized crossover study was conducted in subjects with ischemic heart disease, assigned to 4-week intervention periods of isocaloric VD and meat diet (MD) with individually designed diet plans, separated by a 4-week washout period. The primary outcome was difference in oxidized low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) between diets.
