Unlabelled: Brucellosis, a zoonotic disease, has re-emerged in both humans and animals, causing significant economic losses globally. Recently, an increasing number of rifampicin-resistant strains have been isolated worldwide without detectable mutations in known antibiotic resistance genes. Here, this study identified the deletion of serine/threonine protein kinase (STPK) gene in as an efficient trigger for rifampicin resistance using bioinformatics predictions, a transposon mutant library, and gene mutation strains.

Department of Epidemiology, Ministry of Education Key Lab of Hazard Assessment and Control in Special Operational Environment, School of Public Health, Air Force Medical University, Xi'an, China.

As one of the most neglected zoonotic diseases, brucellosis has posed a serious threat to public health worldwide. This study is purposed to apply different machine learning models to improve the prediction accuracy of human brucellosis (HB) in Shaanxi, China from 2008 to 2020, under livestock husbandry intensification from a spatiotemporal perspective. We quantitatively evaluated the performance and suitability of ConvLSTM, RF, and LSTM models in epidemic forecasting, and investigated the spatial heterogeneity of how different factors drive the occurrence and transmission of HB in distinct sub-regions by using Kernel Density Analysis and Shapley Additional Explanations.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 10-year study in China from 2012-2021 found that 7.54% of acute respiratory infection (ARI) patients were infected with rhinovirus (RV), with a significant portion (69.49%) being children under 5 years old.
  • - RV species A, B, and C were identified, with RV-A being more common in older adults and RV-C in younger children, while both RV-A and RV-C were associated with higher rates of pneumonia compared to RV-B.
  • - The study revealed over 100 types of RV, with RV-A peaking earlier in the year than RV-C, indicating notable differences in the epidemiological and clinical aspects of RV species among ARI patients.

Detrended seasonal relationships and impact of climatic factors combined with spatiotemporal effect on the prevalence of human brucellosis.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

October 2023

Department of Epidemiology, Ministry of Education Key Lab of Hazard Assessment and Control in Special Operational Environment, School of Public Health, Air Force Medical University, Xi'an, 710032, China.

Human brucellosis (HB) is a seasonal and climate-affected infectious disease that is posing an increasing threat to public health and economy. However, most of the research on the seasonal relationships and impact of climatic factors on HB did not consider the secular trend and spatiotemporal effect related to the disease. We herein utilized long-term surveillance data on HB from 2008 to 2020 using sinusoidal models to explore detrended relationships between climatic factors and HB.

With the booming of worldwide agriculture intensification, brucellosis, one of the most neglected zoonotic diseases, has become an increasing challenge for global public health. Although the transmission patterns of human brucellosis (HB) have been studied in many regions, the dynamic transfer processes of risk and its driving factors remain poorly understood, especially in the context of agricultural intensification. This study attempted to explore the risk transfer of HB between the exact epidemic areas and the neighboring or distant low-risk areas to explain the impact of livestock agriculture intensification and foodborne infections on the transmission of HB in Shaanxi Province as a case study.

The uptake of non-EPI vaccines, such as influenza and pneumonia vaccines, are very low in China compared to other countries. In China, immunization services are provided by dedicated vaccination service providers (VSPs), and their recommendation is the key to improve vaccine uptake. This study explores VSP recommendation practices for non-EPI vaccines from a socio-ecological perspective.

The research data were obtained from nine provinces (Anhui, Beijing, Guangdong, Hebei, Hunan, Jilin, Shandong, Shaanxi and Xinjiang) in the "Infectious Disease Surveillance Technology Platform Information Management System" of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention from January 2009 to June 2021. Finally, 8 243 FRS cases with nucleic acid detection results of eight viruses [human influenza virus (HIFV), human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV), human adenovirus (HAdV), human parainfluenza virus (HPIV), human rhinovirus (HRV), human metapneumovirus (HMPV), human coronavirus (HCoV) and human Boca virus (HBoV)] were included in the study.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzed the relationship between parental feeding styles and child weight among 2,139 children in major Chinese cities between 2015 and 2017.
  • Three distinct parental feeding patterns were identified: "concern," "pressure to eat," and "control," each impacting children's weight and obesity risks differently.
  • Key findings show that higher parental concern and lower pressure to eat were linked to increased obesity risk, particularly in children of more educated parents, suggesting potential improvements in parental feeding practices could help prevent childhood obesity.

The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread across the world and was characterized as a pandemic. To protect medical laboratory personnel from infection, most laboratories inactivate the virus causing COVID-19, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), in clinical samples before testing. However, the effect of inactivation on the detection results remains unknown.
