Introduction: Intrapleural injections of cholera toxin B conjugated to saporin (CTB-SAP) result in selective respiratory (, phrenic) motor neuron death and mimics aspects of motor neuron disease [(, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)], such as breathing deficits. This rodent model allows us to study the impact motor neuron death has on the output of surviving phrenic motor neurons as well as the compensatory mechanisms that are recruited. Microglial density in the phrenic motor nucleus as well as cervical gene expression of markers associated with inflammation (.

An insect's wingbeat frequency is a critical determinant of its flight performance and varies by multiple orders of magnitude across Insecta. Despite potential energetic benefits for an insect that matches its wingbeat frequency to its resonant frequency, recent work has shown that moths may operate off their resonant peak. We hypothesized that across species, wingbeat frequency scales with resonance frequency to maintain favourable energetics, but with an offset in species that use frequency modulation as a means of flight control.

Many institutions worldwide honor the gift of human body donors through memorial services, ceremonies, and various other means, such as guided reflection or art activities. Memorial services can vary when it comes to the name, who is involved in the planning, and who may attend. Within the United States, the role of religion in the planning and delivery of these ceremonies at religious institutions has yet to be actively explored.

Dissection of human body donors is a common component of anatomy curricula, as it provides opportunities for tactile and intellectual engagement unmatched otherwise. Additionally, interaction with human body donors contributes to the "hidden curriculum" of allowing students to begin to ethically practice patient care with empathy, respect, and compassion. With this, there have been various proposed guidelines for the ethical treatment of human body donors, with most focusing on student reflections and a final ceremony for honoring the donors, but there are numerous other ways throughout the course to incorporate ethical values and to guide students to consider the humanity of the donor.

Otitis media (OM) is among the most common of childhood illnesses. It has long been hypothesized that children under age two are predisposed to OM due to differences in the anatomy of the Eustachian tube (ET), including the angle of the ET. OM in later childhood is less common but does occur, begging the question, are there shape differences in the ET that persist underlying later occurrences of OM? To answer this question, a novel method, which applied geometric and morphometric shape analysis to landmarks obtained from MRI data, was used.

Article Synopsis
  • Insects have two main ways to fly: some use their muscles at the same time as their wings move, while others use special muscles that can keep moving even when not activated by their brain.
  • Scientists discovered that even though many insects show this second way of flying, it likely only evolved once and then sometimes went back to the first way.
  • By studying these flight types, researchers created a tiny robot that can switch between these flying styles, helping us understand how insects changed their flight over time.

The rapid pace of contemporary environmental change puts many species at risk, especially rare species constrained by limited capacity to adapt or migrate due to low genetic diversity and/or fitness. But the ability to acclimate can provide another way to persist through change. We compared the capacity of rare (Braun's rockcress) and widespread to acclimate to change.

Comparing the Salzmann Index to automatic qualifying conditions when selecting medically necessary orthodontic patients.

Am J Orthod Dentofacial Orthop

December 2023

Advanced Education Program in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Seton Hill University, Greensburg, Pa.

Introduction: This study compared the Salzmann Index (SI) to the American Association of Orthodontists-proposed Automatic Qualifying Conditions (AQC) list in determining eligibility for medically necessary orthodontic care (MNOC). In Pennsylvania, The SI must reflect a score of ≥25, whereas the AQCs are considered binary indicators of a treatment need-the presence of any AQC qualifies a patient for treatment under Medicaid. This study was designed to determine whether the same patients are selected as eligible for MNOC regardless of which selection method is used.

Aim: Both an acute bout of resistance exercise (RE) and caffeine consumption can significantly alter hemodynamics, autonomic modulation, and arterial stiffness, which may correlate with adverse cardiovascular events. However, effects of an acute bout of RE and caffeine are unclear in resistance-trained women.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of an acute bout of RE with repetitions to failure on squat and bench press, with or without caffeine, on performance, resting and recovery measures of hemodynamics, autonomic modulation, as well as arterial stiffness in resistance-trained women.

The origin of blinking in both mudskippers and tetrapods is linked to life on land.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

May 2023

Department of Biology, The Pennsylvania State University, State College, PA 16802.

Blinking, the transient occlusion of the eye by one or more membranes, serves several functions including wetting, protecting, and cleaning the eye. This behavior is seen in nearly all living tetrapods and absent in other extant sarcopterygian lineages suggesting that it might have arisen during the water-to-land transition. Unfortunately, our understanding of the origin of blinking has been limited by a lack of known anatomical correlates of the behavior in the fossil record and a paucity of comparative functional studies.

Species differ dramatically in their prevalence in the natural world, with many species characterized as rare due to restricted geographic distribution, low local abundance and/or habitat specialization. We investigated the ecoevolutionary causes and consequences of rarity with phylogenetically controlled metaanalyses of population genetic diversity, fitness and functional traits in rare and common congeneric plant species. Our syntheses included 252 rare species and 267 common congeners reported in 153 peer-reviewed articles published from 1978 to 2020 and one manuscript in press.

Background: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an arbovirus that periodically emerges to cause large epidemics of arthritic disease. Although the robust immunity elicited by live-attenuated virus (LAV) vaccine candidates makes them attractive, CHIKV vaccine development has been hampered by a high threshold for acceptable adverse events.

Methods: We evaluated the vaccine potential of a recently described LAV, skeletal muscle-restricted virus (SKE), that exhibits diminished replication in skeletal muscle due to insertion of target sequences for skeletal muscle-specific miR-206.

Relationship of 3 indexes of orthodontic treatment need used by Medicaid and oral health-related quality of life.

Am J Orthod Dentofacial Orthop

April 2022

Advanced Education Program in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Seton Hill University, Greensburg, Pa.

Introduction: This study aimed to assess the relationship between 3 indexes of orthodontic treatment need that are used by Medicaid, namely the Salzmann Index (SI), the handicapping labiolingual deviation (HLD) Index, and the HLD California Modification Index, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQOL).

Methods: The orthodontic records of 100 participants aged 11-14 years were used to calculate occlusal index scores. The condition-specific oral impacts on daily performances (OIDP) index questionnaire was used to quantify OHRQOL and to identify detriments attributable to malocclusion-related conditions (MRCs).

Article Synopsis
  • Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a serious health risk and understanding its disease mechanisms and replication is vital for public health efforts.
  • Research identified two key mutations (E1 V156A and E1 K211T) in the CHIKV glycoprotein that enhance the virus's ability to infect and cause disease in hosts, including humans.
  • These mutations alter how the virus interacts with host cells, leading to increased infectivity and symptoms like foot swelling in mouse models, highlighting the need for further studies on CHIKV variants.

Introduction: Both the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) asthma practice guidelines recommend that providers routinely check inhaler technique and correct any mistakes that patients may make when using these devices. Providers, however, rarely check inhaler technique during asthma visits. The objectives of this study were to: (1) describe the development of an instrument to measure self-efficacy and outcome expectations regarding inhaler technique patient education, (2) evaluate the internal consistency reliability of the new scales, and (3) provide preliminary evidence of construct validity.
