Symmetrical drug-related intertriginous and flexural exanthema (SDRIFE) is a rare, symmetrical skin eruption triggered by various medications, predominantly beta-lactam antibiotics. We report the case of a 69-year-old male with moderate-to-severe ulcerative colitis who developed SDRIFE following the seventh intravenous administration of infliximab. The patient presented with symmetrical, pruritic erythema in the cubital and popliteal fossae, groins, gluteal and retroauricular regions without systemic involvement.

Despite being one of the most common infectious diseases, urinary tract infections (UTIs) still represent a challenge for clinicians to diagnose and treat, especially in the era of growing antibiotic resistance among uropathogenic bacteria. Recent studies investigating the pathophysiology of UTIs have discovered the prominent role of antimicrobial peptides in the urinary tract defense system. Cathelicidin is an evolutionary conserved antimicrobial peptide encoded by one single gene in humans.

Introduction: Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases due to endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis development. The aim of this study was to determine whether the levothyroxine therapy could impact the concentrations of endothelial dysfunction blood markers, namely endothelin-1 (ET-1), asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and endocan, in patients with a mild form of SCH (thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) ≤ 10 mIU/L).
Materials And Methods: In this case-control prospective study, SCH patients and healthy controls were recruited during their regular health examinations.

In the myocardium of control subjects and patients undergoing heart transplantation or left ventricular assist device implantation (LVAD), we analyzed concentrations of Al, As, Cd, Pb, and Ni using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Myocardial generation of oxidative-stress-induced lipid peroxidation was analyzed by quantifying concentration of 4-Hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) with ELISA and pro-apoptotic DAPK2 gene expression was determined with quantitative RT-PCR. Compared to six control hearts, myocardial samples of 128 individuals undergoing heart transplantation or LVAD implantation exhibited a moderate increase in deposition of five tested non-essential elements, which was significantly increased only for Cd and cumulative deposition of Al, As, Cd, and Pb.

Background And Aims: Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is a common procedure conducted under regional anaesthesia, providing real-time cerebral function monitoring. Many different combinations of regional cervical blocks exist, and most offer adequate analgesia in intraoperative and postoperative recovery. This research compares a superficial cervical plexus block (SCB) alone and combined with an ultrasound (US)-guided carotid sheath block (CSB).

This study was designed to examine the association between myocardial concentrations of the trace elements Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, and Zn and the expression of mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt) elements and the age of patients who received heart transplantation or a left-ventricular assist device (ageHTx/LVAD). Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used to determine the concentration of Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, and Zn in the myocardium of control subjects and patients undergoing heart transplantation or left-ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. We used ELISA to quantify the expression of UPRmt proteins and 4-Hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), which served as a marker of oxidative-stress-induced lipid peroxidation.

Unlabelled: Cardiovascular diseases, which are the leading cause of death in Croatia, are linked to the high prevalence of hypertension. Both are associated with high salt intake, which was determined almost two decades ago when Croatian Action on Salt and Health (CRASH) was launched. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate salt, potassium, and iodine intake using a single 24 h urine sample in a random sample of the adult Croatian population and to analyse trends in salt consumption after the CRASH was intensively started.

Vitamin D plays important role in inflammatory rheumatic diseases, which in turn rose an interest for investigating association of its deficiency with disease activity. In this research we aimed to evaluate this matter in the context of spondyloarthritis (SpA), together with treatment modalities and bone density in people diagnosed with axial or peripheral SpA in real-life setting. In our study we enrolled 99 patients with diagnosis of SpA treated at the tertiary level rheumatology department.

Surgical excision of the primary tumor represents the most frequent and curative procedure for solid malignancies. Compelling evidence suggests that, despite its beneficial effects, surgery may impair immunosurveillance by triggering an immunosuppressive inflammatory stress response and favor recurrence by stimulating minimal residual disease. In addition, many factors interfere with the immune effectors before and after cancer procedures, such as malnutrition, anemia, or subsequent transfusion.

Introduction: In children, congenital heart defects represent the primary cause of increased serum troponin I. The elimination process of cardiac troponin I from the bloodstream and the factors influencing this process remain unknown. The objective of this study was to explore the role of troponin I as an indicator of cardiac damage in children both in serum and urine, a concept previously investigated in adults.

Performing physical exercise affects intraocular pressure, and its elevation and fluctuations are the main risk factors for glaucoma development or progression. The aim of this study was to examine the acute alterations in intraocular pressure (IOP) during four unweighted isometric exercises and to determine whether the different head and body positions taken during exercise additionally affect IOP. Twelve healthy volunteers between the ages of 25 and 33 performed four isometric exercises: wall sit in neutral head and body position, elbow plank in prone head and body position, reverse plank in supine head and body position for 1 min, and right-side plank in lateral head and body position for 30 s.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) presents varying degrees of femoral head dislocation, with severe cases leading to the formation of a new articular surface on the external side of the iliac bone-the neoacetabulum. Despite conventional understanding suggesting otherwise, a tissue resembling hyaline cartilage is found in the neoacetabulum and acetabulum of Crowe III and IV patients, indicating a potential for hyaline cartilage development without mechanical pressure. To test this theory, acetabular and femoral head cartilage obtained from patients with DDH was stained with hematoxylin-eosin and toluidine blue.

Introduction: Existing data on fragility spinal fractures prevalence in liver transplant candidates are scarce and inconsistent. This may be due to other comorbidities, besides hepatic osteodystrophy (HO), that contribute to bone loss and fragility fracture prevalence in chronic liver disease (CLD).
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of spinal thoracic and lumbar fragility fractures among cirrhotic, non-chronic kidney disease (CKD), non-diabetic liver transplant candidates and to explore their relationship with clinical characteristics, laboratory markers and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) results.

Anti HER2 therapy and left breast adjuvant radiation therapy (RT) can both result in cardiotoxicity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of radiation dose on cardiac structures on the values of the early cardiotoxicity marker high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hscTnI) in patients with HER2-positive left breast cancer undergoing adjuvant concomitant antiHER2 therapy and radiotherapy, and to establish a correlation between the hscTnI values and cardiac radiation doses. Sixty-one patients underwent left breast hypofractionated radiotherapy in parallel with anti-HER2 therapy: trastuzumab, combined trastuzumab-pertuzumab or trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1).

One of the greatest burdens on the healthcare systems of modern civilization is cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Therefore, the medical community is looking for ways to reduce the incidence of CVDs. Simple lifestyle changes from an unhealthy to a healthy lifestyle are the cornerstone of prevention, but other risk factors for cardiovascular disease are also being currently targeted, most notably dyslipidaemia.
