RENEB Inter-Laboratory comparison 2017: limits and pitfalls of ILCs.

Int J Radiat Biol

July 2024

Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS), Oberschleissheim, Germany.

Purpose: In case of a mass-casualty radiological event, there would be a need for networking to overcome surge limitations and to quickly obtain homogeneous results (reported aberration frequencies or estimated doses) among biodosimetry laboratories. These results must be consistent within such network. Inter-laboratory comparisons (ILCs) are widely accepted to achieve this homogeneity.

Unidad de Hepatología y Trasplante Hepático, Servicio de Medicina Digestiva, Hospital Universitario La Fe, Valencia, España; Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Hepáticas y Digestivas (CIBERehd), Madrid, España; Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de Valencia, Valencia, España.

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection affects around 150 million people. It is a leading cause of liver related morbidity and mortality through its predisposition to liver fibrosis, cirrhosis and end-stage liver complications. New treatments based on direct-acting antivirals have opened a new era in the management of HCV cirrhosis.

Purpose: Two quality controlled inter-laboratory exercises were organized within the EU project 'Realizing the European Network of Biodosimetry (RENEB)' to further optimize the dicentric chromosome assay (DCA) and to identify needs for training and harmonization activities within the RENEB network.

Materials And Methods: The general study design included blood shipment, sample processing, analysis of chromosome aberrations and radiation dose assessment. After manual scoring of dicentric chromosomes in different cell numbers dose estimations and corresponding 95% confidence intervals were submitted by the participants.

Plan of Action for Inherited Cardiovascular Diseases: Synthesis of Recommendations and Action Algorithms.

Rev Esp Cardiol (Engl Ed)

March 2016

Unidad de Cardiopatías Familiares, Servicio de Cardiología, Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro, Majadahonda, Madrid, Spain; Grupo de Trabajo de Cardiopatías Familiares, Sociedad Española de Cardiología, Madrid, Spain.

The term inherited cardiovascular disease encompasses a group of cardiovascular diseases (cardiomyopathies, channelopathies, certain aortic diseases, and other syndromes) with a number of common characteristics: they have a genetic basis, a familial presentation, a heterogeneous clinical course, and, finally, can all be associated with sudden cardiac death. The present document summarizes some important concepts related to recent advances in sequencing techniques and understanding of the genetic bases of these diseases. We propose diagnostic algorithms and clinical practice recommendations and discuss controversial aspects of current clinical interest.

Creating a sustainable network in biological and retrospective dosimetry that involves a large number of experienced laboratories throughout the European Union (EU) will significantly improve the accident and emergency response capabilities in case of a large-scale radiological emergency. A well-organised cooperative action involving EU laboratories will offer the best chance for fast and trustworthy dose assessments that are urgently needed in an emergency situation. To this end, the EC supports the establishment of a European network in biological dosimetry (RENEB).

Introduction: It is known that there is a high incidence of diabetes mellitus (DM) among heart transplant (HT) patients, which may be up to 30% at 5 years. The presence of DM has been associated with increased morbidity (infections, renal dysfunction, or graft vascular disease), and its development has been related primarily to immunosuppressive therapy. The objective of this study was to determine, in our experience, the presence of predictive variables for the development of DM following HT.

Introduction: The neuroblastoma (NB) is one of the most common pediatric malignant neoplasms. The most commonly used tumor markers in the diagnosis and follow-up of this tumor are the serum neuron-specific enolase (NSE), ferritin and lactic dehydrogenase and urinary vanillymandelic and homovanillic acid. The common imaging modalities are CT, MRI and 123I or 131I-meta-iodobenzylguanidine scintigraphy.

A great number of studies have been carried out during many years in order to evaluate the histological changes that take place after the insertion of a cochlear implant, having been experimentally and histologically, in temporal bones, demonstrated its relative harmlessness. We have focused our functional investigation induced by the implants through the shift of pre- and postoperative tonal audiometric thresholds, in 13 carriers on an C. I.
