Contrast agents for MR enterography.

Radiologia (Engl Ed)

October 2024

Sección de Radiología Abdominal, Servicio de Radiodiagnóstico, Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias (HUCA), Oviedo, Asturias, Spain.

Magnetic resonance enterography is primarily indicated for inflammatory bowel diseases. The study of the gastrointestinal tract using MRI has become feasible due to the emergence of ultrafast sequences with higher spatial resolution and phased-array coils enabling wider fields of view. However, to ensure the quality of the examination, it is essential to have prior preparation with oral or rectal contrast to distend the lumen and improve the definition of the intestinal wall.

High-level delafloxacin-resistant (H-L DLX-R) isolates (minimum inhibitory concentration ≥1 mg/L) associated with mutations affecting position 84 of ParC have emerged. We aimed to elucidate the role of these mutations as a mechanism of H-L DLX resistance in methicillin-resistant (MRSA) isolates recovered from blood cultures. Susceptibility to DLX was determined in 75 MRSA isolates by E-test, and an rt-PCR was developed to detect mutations affecting position 84 of ParC to screen a further 185 MRSA isolates.

Article Synopsis
  • The subspecies serovar 4,12:i:- is a newly recognized variant of Typhimurium, which has become a global health concern in recent decades, with distinct clones identified across different regions, including Southern Europe and the U.S.
  • This study specifically examined multidrug-resistant isolates from Spanish hospitals, highlighting that resistance genes are primarily located on unique IncR plasmids, which also contain virulence genes and show significant genetic diversity.
  • The findings indicate that resistance in the Southern European clone evolves through both the diversification of existing plasmids and the acquisition of new ones, while specific genetic deletions contribute to its monophasic characteristics.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline and neuropathological hallmarks, including β-amyloid (Aβ) plaques, Tau tangles, synaptic dysfunction and neurodegeneration. Emerging evidence suggests that abnormal iron (Fe) metabolism plays a role in AD pathogenesis, but the precise spatial distribution of the Fe and its transporters, such as ferroportin (FPN), within affected brain regions remains poorly understood. This study investigates the distribution of Fe and FPN in the CA1 region of the human hippocampus in AD patients with a micrometer lateral resolution using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS).

Schizophrenia (SCH) and bipolar disorder (BD) are two of the most important psychiatric pathologies due to their high population incidence and disabling power, but they also present, mainly in their debut, high clinical similarities that make their discrimination difficult. In this work, the differential oxidative stress, present in both disorders, is shown as a concatenator of the systemic alterations-both plasma and erythrocyte, and even at the level of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC)-in which, for the first time, the different affectations that both disorders cause at the level of the cellular interactome were observed. A marked erythrocyte antioxidant imbalance only present in SCH generalizes to oxidative damage at the plasma level and shows a clear impact on cellular involvement.
